How To Blunami 21 Pin DCC & Sound Athearn SW1500

- The new 21 pin SoundTraxx Blunami decoder is as simple as any other plug & play 21 pin decoder, but it offers the ability to not only control your trains using a phone app, but also to change CVs by simply using the app on your phone. That means no confusing CV calculations and no need for a programming track or JMRI.
What's more is that you can opt to control the locomotive with your regular DCC system if you prefer the throttles it uses. That means your model can be set up using the phone app then controlled the same way you control everything else on your layout.
If you're thinking about starting a layout or starting to convert your current locomotive collection to DCC, it's worth a good hard look!
Editor's note: I became aware of a focus issue during the speaker soldering segment during post production. Since the model was already together, I did not re-shoot that segment, figuring most viewers would know what it looks like to solder the wires to the speaker contact pads.

Blunami DCC n Sound technology is worth the investment n makes the locomotive's sound better than before
Blunami is SO incredibly easy to program! Really love that I don’t have to spend so much time going through CV’s, just read what it is and change what is needed.
Great video, especially the programming section! I started my journey to get back into model railroading about 4 years ago and was almost immediately derailed (pun intended) by "real life". I am still in that stuck mode, but I have been able to use my time to greatly refine my track planning and do a lot of learning, and part of that is finding out about Bluenami decoders. As a person who doesn't want to spend tons of time on building my own DCC system or doing extensive wiring, this is a perfect solution and I love the simplicity. And this is one of my three already-purchased locomotives, complete with a tutorial! :-) I will definitely be following this to upgrade my SW1500 once my build gets back on-track! Thank you for sharing!
An excellent how to. Thank you for sharing.
Western pacific only had 3 of the SW500 numbered 1501 to 1503. The engine is a 12 cyl-645E. On one of Charles Smiley's dvd's it shows one of them working in San Francisco around the piers. Nice install.
Thanks John! See you next time!
Thanks... Great video. Hope Athearn comes out with a "silent" line of locos which already have the speaker. You just provide the decoder.
It’s so much easier to speed match locos with the Blunami. It’s awesome they now make a 21 pin Blunami decoder.
Good tip!
Great video!
I believe WP's SW 1500's came with the single chime horn but then was changed to a Nathan M5 which was the usual WP Horn, engine sounded more like a GP40 than a SW1500.
Hey John, that was a great tutorial on the install. So, you’re using the Blunami to do the decoding and to change the sounds but you’re using the track for power? I thought that Blunami made it so the train could run on dead rail. Am I mixing up two different things or is it capable of running both ways?
Yes, in this example the track is providing the power. If you would like to see an example of Blunami in a dead rail application, check out the four part series on installing Blunami and battery into a garden scale Bachmann Climax on this channel.

Yes, Blunami can operate on track power OR with battery power!
