      Well he’s underrated for a reason, he wouldn’t work if people realized how important he is, the whole point of Kimbley is he only exists in the story to point out the flaws in other characters ideologies, this works because despite being the most genuinely amoral and evil character in the series, he’s completely sane and sees things more clearly than anyone else

    “I think the only thing I was missing was those last 15 to 20 episodes left of the story.”
    100 % agreed. It’s some of the darkest storytelling I’ve seen in any medium at all. Something about the last third or so of FMA 2003 gave me an existential dread and haunting hollowness I still can’t quite explain. Which is why it’s one of my favorite anime.

    • @haosmagnaingram6992

      Yeah it’s the gate in 2003. It’s so ominous and like a force of nature. It’s almost lovecraftian. Always gave me the creeps and I think that’s something I found undermined by the character of truth, it makes the gate seem less unforgiving and instead something that can be reasoned with, something less mysterious and more benign. (Though the character of truth also brought a lot to the show in other ways so it isn’t exactly like one way is inherently better just each play to different strengths)

    • @leonidsedov9680
      @leonidsedov9680 3 года назад +5

      Yeah. I loved the way they introduced and developed characters. They took their time to slowly make us fall in love with every character they later killed in a cold way. They took their time to develop every important character. They made us understand villains. I loved every character, they all had depth to them. 2003 was very dark and very unforgiving and an absolute masterpiece. I can't pinpoint what exactly made me feel this hollowness as you did, but I feel like it were the characters and how unforgiving and indifferent the world was to every one of them. There were no winners, there was no happy ending, only cold and unforgiving consequences of everyones' actions.
      FMAB feels very rushed compared to 2003, but I think it is only because 2003 made sure to take time and concentrate on characters.

    I feel like in most Shonen, the protagonist's main motive is to get stronger. Here we are introduced to a character who is already strong, but is trying to rectify the mistakes he childishly made when first coming to terms with his strength. It's more about connections with people and politics which I feel can get lost on a lot of people who come wanting only action.

      @doodlemunchkin2222 3 года назад

      @@mikemath9508 true. Honestly the MANGA is the ‘original’. Because it was started first, then FMA 03, then Brotherhood. But if we’re talking about just the anime adaptations, FMA 03 IS considered the ‘original’ since it was the first to be made and aired. Fmab is based off the original content of the manga…but it still came out second after the other anime, and still is missing quite a lot of story from the manga. Most people who grew up with anime-only call FMA 03 the original since it’s the first of any FMA story they would’ve seen long before the newer version.
      U can nitpick and insist all u want about what should be called the original anime..:P but FMA will likely always be referred to by the anime community as the original, since the new one goes by Fullmetal Alchemist BROTHERHOOD, and not just original old: “Fullmetal Alchemist” like the first show. It is what it is.
      And the mangaka did like fma 03 a lot, to the point where she made several koma theatre comics based on the FMA 03 universe and designed many of the anime-only characters, and also was a part of the writing and character process for a lot of it and was closely referenced for direction of the new story, before she gave them full permission to go with whatever they felt fit.

Tanjurou is a common goody-two shoed protagonist who was thrust to another world due to coincidence. And we have a clear delineation that demons are bad though they may have been regretful in the end. The Elrics were a tad more interesting imo in that they did something forbidden and it was their choice that got them to their path. They dont necessarily align with good people as they align with the military who have done questionable things. In Demon Slayer we know who the big bad is at the start while with FMA we do not. In DS we have arcs of Tanjurou constantly getting power ups to potentially defeat Muzan in FMA, we still do a bit, but the power more or less stays the same and it's a matter of who does things smarter.

The 2003 version really does a much better job at presenting the earlier material.
    Also you should go and watch all of 2003 as it is a completely different series that diverges greatly. @@animeaugie Its actually better than Brotherhood though. I never understood people's enfactuation with "it follows the manga". Only cuz it follows the manga doesnt mean its better srory-telling, world building, or character developing. Brotherhood has a LOT of issue.
      Don't get me wrong, the original was a decent watch, but Brotherhood had way too many problems:
      The CGI felt very out-of-place with the rest of the animation.
      The introduction is very rushed: we get to know very little of who the Elric brothers are and what they’re like as people before the main action starts. Most people seem to think this is an advantage; I certainly do not.
      Similarly, emotional moments are somewhat more rushed and far less poignant than they should’ve been, and sometimes follow less of a build-up.
      The moral code given was:
      very monotonous-the message that ‘killing humans is wrong’ is repeated over and over, and it somehow always having long-term good effects even when taken to its (il)logical extreme (e.g. sparing Kimblee and even Envy) made it predictable and far too much for my suspension of disbelief; and
      somewhat puzzling-being a vegan at the time, I found it hypocritical that they’d spare even the worst of the worst of humanity, applying the most liberal interpretation for the term, just for being ‘human’, while eating the flesh of dead animals without batting an eye.
      The characters felt much more one-dimensional, and because of the moral code the series keeps repeating their choices were very predictable almost all the time.
      The writer was clearly clueless about what war is really like. Living in a country that’s been pacifist for decades apparently gave her very mistaken ideas about how people, both in the military and civilians, think of wars they’re involved in. This irked me but I could laugh it off the way one would a virgin fangirl’s clueless yaoi fanfic, but what I couldn’t was:
      The writer seemed to be completely unaware of her privilege and her country’s responsibility for the atrocities it committed. Her idea of solving a political conflict seemed to boil down to ‘everyone putting down their weapons and grinding their teeth a little before coming together to sing “Kumbaya”’. Her presenting Ishvalan violent retribution against military personnel as somehow being on par with Amestrian violence sickening, as if she were implicitly telling the people of Nanjing, the Koreans, and the Ainu, ‘Ah-ah-ah, remember: violence is wrong!’ when she should be saying, ‘We were horrible to you, we’re so sorry, we have to compensate you, please forgive us.’
      Finally, Ed’s and Winry’s relationship was cliché and obnoxious.
      Oh, and the omake is pretty blatantly homophobic. Fuck that.
      Compare and contrast the original series, where:
      The animation is not as advanced but it is more consistent: you don’t have, say, CGI doors opening in a more crudely animated scenario and breaking the immersion illusion.
      It takes a few episodes worth of mostly standalone stories before the main plot is introduced, so we get to see what Edward is like as a person before the really heavy stuff kicks in. We get a chance to relate first without the really dark stuff alienating the viewers. This could easily be a weak point, to some extent, but these episodes become very relevant later on so they don’t become pure filler.
      The moral code given is a much murkier one, especially since that’s not what the series is about. There are far more shades of grey, and the limits of what counts or doesn’t count as human are more intensely debated (and empathy towards animals is emphasized a bit more, when Ed tells Wrath to spare a rat he catches). As a result the characters are much less predictable or one-dimensional; special mention goes to Ed, Roy, Scar, and Hohenheim.
      The true horrors of war are represented much more realistically. The whole dynamic between Amestris and the Ishvalans is elaborated on some more and the conflict makes internal sense, so it feels like much more real than ‘war broke out because one arsehole decided to fuck everything up’. The army is also presented as being horrific enough to actually make some dents in Ed’s belief system and make it look like absolution isn’t as simplistic as Arakawa made it out to be.
      As a matter of fact, the series handled very different themes. Rather than the simplistic moral code and the ridiculous, downright offensive idea of conflict resolution Brotherhood focused on, the first adaptation focused on the concept of making mistakes, atonement, and living on with the burden of the consequences of the irreversible. It was a very powerful exploration of these themes and I was deeply moved by it (and the truly emotional scenes) to the point of uncontrollable sobbing.
      The original does have its flaws, e.g. Al being too flat a character (fortunately events and characters around him and his relationship with Ed are engaging enough to make up for it), the ending kinda drags on, and some would-be poignant moments undermined by misplaced comedy (e.g. ‘Douglas is… an alien’). Both films were decent, and the OVAs were too (Brotherhood’s were better than the main anime). Still, I think it’s leaps and bounds ahead of Brotherhood.

      I disagree about 03's presentation of the earlier material. I actually found the first 13 or so episodes of 2003 to be agonizingly slow/bloated (keep in mind that two of them--4 and 10--are godawful filler episodes that add very little to the overall plot), especially in comparison to Brotherhood. Sure, BH moves fast in the beginning, but even as a first time viewer with little to no knowledge of the fma series, I still found it relatively engaging and easy to follow. 2003, on the other hand, spent way too much time on innocuous and unnecessary junk (did we really need an entire episode devoted to a side character like Barry? Did we really need an episode devoted to Ed and Roy duking it out in a tournament?). Some people might've found those episodes neat, but personally I was just bored lol

    Because I felt that that brotherhood was just the manga with weird character design (inferior) , weird musical choice , rushed beginning , and lack of characterisation .
    While the 2003 anime took the concept of the manga and made it its own. So I can have 2 stories to enjoy instead of the same but in animation.
    And brotherhood simplified a lot of things that made the characters very ambiguous especially during the ishvalian massacre and made the conflict a little seems like black vs white , obviously good vs obviously evil.

I have a semi-complicated relationship with the original series, but I believe it's still worth a watch (Lust and Scar were easily the best things about that show, and if I ever decide to revisit the 2003 series, it'll be to see them again lmao). I also know a lot of people think the origin of the homonculi is better in 03, but I'm not sure I agree. If you think about it for more than one second, it seems kind of...odd? Why are there only seven of them? Why are they all named after a sin, despite some of them not really displaying that particular trait (like, sloth doesn't seem very slothful to me)? In mangahood, the names and number of homonculi make sense because they're the *literal* personifications of Greed, Lust, Pride, etc., but in 2003 they're not extracted sins, they're failed transmutations...so why are they like that lol. what is the reason

    • @doodlemunchkin2222
      @doodlemunchkin2222 3 года назад +1

      Meh, I still think I find the 03 homunculi more interesting overall. And tbh the mangaka also admitted that she likes their stories better as well. It just takes a little more thinking to see the idea behind some of them.
      Sloth is slothful, but just not in the usual, literal, physical sense. More of a mental laziness. Sloth shows that she’s slothful by the way she confronts-or lack of-her past and connection to her sons. She doesn’t want to be bothered with thinking about what her memories imply of who she is. It’s too much of a burden, so she pushes it to the side and wants to live a carefree life as a homunculi and not have to worry about the heavy feelings she feels when around the Elric brothers. Instead of face who she truly was, she’d rather just kill her past all together so she doesn’t have to be bothered by those complicated feelings and questions anymore. It’s difficult to face, and a complex issue, so she finds it easier to run from it or deny it than face it.
      She’s the opposite of Lust in that way.
      Lust is a drive, a passion. So the character Lust is passionate and driven the longer the show goes on to discover who she is and her past.
      Lust doesn’t really represent her named sin as much, but tbh the BH Lust isn’t really in the traditional sense either-she represents more of a blood-lust tbh. But in 03 since Scar’s brother brought her back as his lover..in what might’ve been seen as a lustful and desperate act since she was so beautiful and desired by him…and he lost his…thingy…as a result of committing the taboo, it’s a pretty fair assumption of what sin she was made for or closest linked to. Therefore her connection to “lust”.
      And there were 7 just because there were at the time. They were the human transmutations Dante had found or knew about that she could take advantage of and use. I just assumed Dante gave them those names because her name (and show’s philosophies) are a reference to the Dante’s Inferno books, which have to do with the 7 deadly sins. I figure she gave them those nicknames because there mere existence as human transmutations was like a “sin” and caused by human error, and named them after the common human sins that seemed to fit their personalities or looks.

    • @redherring5287
      @redherring5287 3 года назад

      I see! I think I think understand now lol.
      Really though, kind of a coincidence that Dante just so happened to stumble across four of them (she made Greed, Pride, and Envy herself so I won’t count them). AKA, the perfect amount for her to name each one after a sin lmao. Speaking of which, wouldn’t she have to be in/around Ishbal to find Lust? Why would she even be there in the first place? It’s been a while since I’ve seen the 03 anime, so I can’t remember if that’s addressed or not
      This is just me nitpicking tho tbh, and I don’t actually think it affects the quality of 03 in any meaningful way. It’s still an objectively good show.

    • @tarun_kumar_29
      @tarun_kumar_29 3 года назад

      I think the reason why there were only 7 Homunculi instead of like 70 because their birth required human transmutation. If I'm not wrong, only a handful of alchemists can actually perform it since it requires immense skill and knowledge. I remember Lust saying that this is the first time all 7 of them have been alive together, which makes sense as we literally see the birth of 3 homunculus in the show.

    I could not disagree more about "putting all your cards on the table by the end", if there is one thing that I think immediately minimizes your entire world and story it's if the story gives off the impression that everything about the world has been told, and that everything that is mentioned in the story is directly relevant to the story at hand.
    This is why I can't stand Naruto, where the entire history of the Shinobi feels small and fake because everything has to do with what's going on right here and now. The story drags on, it overstays it's welcome, and it ruins the mystery.
    The best example is lord of the rings, where you hear names and events of things throughout history, characters thinking back wistfully about things that are never mentioned again unless you start digging through the silmarilion or other books. This made the world feel real, alive, huge, and ancient, it made you fantasize about what lay beyond the borders of the map.
    FMA:B does this perfect, unlike basically all anime that think that everything needs to be told and tied in. FMA:B left me both fulfilled and wishing there was more, which is why I keep coming back to it.
    Again, could not disagree more on this point, laying everything on the table is just bad writing imo.

    And for fma 03, it may not follow the manga but it's still a pretty good watch. for one, lust may be bland in fmab but she's a much better character in 03!

    FMA:B is my personal anime masterpiece, and while I've watched anime before FMA:B, it was FMA:B that got me to love anime.
    I remember seeing Edward and Alphonse before watching FMA:B, and hearing people talk about FMA:B. And almost in a weird defensive move I went "screw those guys, they and their show isn't as good as .... (I don't even remember who I thought was better)" and almost felt like not watching FMA:B on purpose as an act of defiance.
    Then I started watching it during a lan party, was obsessed by episode 2, watched the entire series in 2 days, and never looked back. This is my lord of the rings of anime.

      @@haosmagnaingram6992 I watched the 2003 version before Brotherhood so I might just be biased because the beginning of the 2003 version was very strong and I was already attached to the characters. I'd honestly recommend people watch the 2003 version before Brotherhood because the 03 anime gets you attached to a lot of the characters whereas brotherhood feels like it was made with the assumption that you've already seen the 03 anime and doesn't flesh them out as much and just wants to move the plot along.

    • @ThePreciseClimber

      I mean, if you look at the adaptation ratio (how much manga an episode adapts), you'll notice the beginning is definitely quite faster than later parts. FMAB is 64 episodes so let's divide that into four equal parts of 16 episodes:
      Episodes 1-16 - 8.25 volumes - 0.52 volumes per episode
      Episodes 17-32 - 7.25 volumes - 0.45 volumes per episode
      Episodes 33-48 - 5.5 volumes - 0.34 volumes per episode
      Episodes 49-64 - 6 volumes - 0.37 volumes per episode
      As you can see, they went from dedicating 2 episodes to a single volume to dedicating 3 episodes to a single volume. I think they would've needed around 74 episodes (instead of 64) to keep the adaptation ratio consistent across the board.
      The existence of FMA 2003 was not really a factor here. The truth is, the production committee gave them 63 episodes to work with. The showrunner had to fight them really hard so they would agree to one more episode. There's no way they would've given them another 10 on top of that. So they had to rush the beginning a bit.

    In terms of setting we follow a young teenager who once he learns that he hits a dead end somewhere quickly leaves to look for another Avenue of finding a philosopher stone. And the Father made homunculi were supposed to be one dimensional, Greed and Wrath however were human turned homunculi so they still retain emotions, although Wrath would bury these, and Greed’s emotions don’t show until his last scene but his relationship with Ling makes it an interesting dynamic

    IMO you should watch both the og and brotherhood as they have different latter half and the og imo handled emotions, dark themes and the consequences of trying to revive the dead better and it also have a better first half, although this imo is unfair to brotherhood as they purposely fasten the first half of the series to get right into where the og was left off because the og already tacked it in details. As for brotherhood the 2nd half is definitely better and deservingly so as it's the canon story but the drama heavy 2nd half of the 2003 version is right behind its tail imo.
