- This is a collectors video about Epic racing to the E3 with all the pressure from Microsoft to present Gears of War for the first time.. It's really a fantastic video that shows how much suffering game devs go through when management comments come from those who don't understand gaming at all..
If it was up to Microsoft, the chainsaw would have never seen the light of day and the game would have been another generic shooter.. Thank god everything turned out as it did.
If anyone from Epic reads this, and in case it needs to be pulled down, I just want to say guys.. YOU ROCK.. Microsoft didn't deserve such a great game how much beef they gave you.. All of us Gears of War fans thank you!

The story wasn’t as good but the gameplay is still phenomenal. Almost 20 years and imo gears has consistently maintained the greatest gameplay of any popular modern shooter franchise
Not a single cod or halo story ever resonated with me and I’ve never found the gameplay actually stellar. Just passable

I'm glad that they tried real hard to keep the chainsaw. Because it became one of the most iconic weapon in video games. Once you see the chainsaw gun , you know what game you are playing

The documentary was fake and edited. No one was going to cut the chainsaw. That executive woman was talking about something else and they clipped her to make it sound like she wanted to cut the most important weapon in the game lmao, because they needed a "bad guy" for the documentary."
The game always included the chainsaw, this argue was about a trailer, not the game. The Documentary needed some created drama, so they created fake drama.
I don't understand why it was so contentious. Doom had a chainsaw 13 years prior to Gears.

This is such a great "time capsule" of what game development used to be like in early 2000. Calling a guy "walking hr nightmare", discussing boob size of an NPC, taking about crunch in the open, actually playing live demos on stage... This stuff just doesn't happen anymore.

I think it's the company community that motivated these devs to get the game out the door. When you have a positive community drive - work is done with great enthusiasm.

People dont give it credit, but the Hammer of Dawn was fucking revolutionary for the time. Insane experience using it for the first time. left me in awe,
Epic also didn't want to sell the maps as DLC, they wanted to do what they did with Unreal on PC forever, keep giving free content to keep players engaged and around. They believed more in the day 1 sales of the games in the franchise, so they wanted to keep people there so they'd get huge sales on Gears 2 and so on. MS ofcourse saw things differently, and that began the 1st map packs delays that went on forever, until Epic got upset enough to start putting out little blogs explaining that the maps were actually done early and it was MS struggling with them. They eventually gave in to MS after a final behind-closed-doors sitdown where clearly MS dropped bags of $$$$ on Epic, and the transparency disappeared and the $DLC$ map packs became a thing in Gears.
Holy shit this was back when E3 actually mattered to the industry, like, A LOT.
I remember buying this at launch and being blown away. The first 2 are all I care about to this day.

Gears of war was the game that pushed my dad over the edge and he canceled my xbox live subscription.
Not sure why this showed in my feed. Before this launched in 2006, I was invited to a launch party in Chapel Hill at a small bar. I think hosted by Xbox live. Maybe 150 people all got to play got a tshirt, chatted with Cliff. Was a great time.
I’ve gotta give it to the guy, he lead a team to develop and make one of my favourite games series of all time.
There is no way in which any hater can skew it to not give him credit, he was the lead designer.

@@awepizza I would argue it started in 2012-2013 when console games began to be more mobile in nature. Over the last year we have seen console games become grindfests requiring almost pay to play in too many ways.
I miss the days when games were 15-20 hour incredible adventures that you enjoyed, put down, and picked up the next one and rinse and repeat. That was the beauty of that 360/PS3 era.
They still come but are far and few between.

This truly shows just how inept Microsoft is. Still to this day most would argue that they are even worse than what you can see in this video and what the description says. Imagine all of the things that have been behind closed doors at Microsoft that we did not have the chance to hear, like the stupid choice to get rid of the chainsaw from gear of war LMAO. For being "over the top and too violent". Just how many games have they ruined or decided to cancel over boneheaded decisions like this? They had the chance to make a helldiver 2 game with the Halo IP and instead of space marines it would be ODST and Microsoft said "we are not interested". It was a massive cringefest. They were going for that early 00s reality show vibe. This and when he borrows Tim's Lambo, incredibly cringe. Cliff already had luxury supercars back then. Idk but it feels like Epic and especially Microsoft tried to market themselves to younger audiences by being the super cool teenager, and used Cliff as the frontman.
