THANK YOU SO MUCH OMGGG!!! I don’t know what it is that lately a lot of new people who are discovering the battling scene (which I’m totally happy and hope of more) have a hard time understanding that freestyle and battling is almost like a different art medium that is far bigger and complex than people outside of it give credit to. It’s normal for people to not understand everything at first but that doesn’t mean one has to be rude or condescending about it. As a freestyle fan and dancer, I just hope people can stop looking at battles as this black and white phenomenon that really isn’t the case.
2:40 I would even add that beat-killing is the easiest way for a non-dancer to watch and understand the hype of the audience. I'm not a dancer and it took me days of watching different dancers to understand moving to the vocals and vibe and not the beat. It's quite obvious when someone does a certain move on a certain beat (Les Twins often do a vibrating move f.e.), but it's much less obvious when a dancer catches the vibe of the vocals or/and song in their moves.
Loved this video!!! You brought up some very interesting points, I think this is one of the reasons why I am not the biggest fan of crowd voting because people are usually not able to put their biases aside and just want to vote for their favourite dancer no matter what. Another reason I think is that non dancers because they might not be familiar with the style might not be good at catching or understanding sutble things in the dance and will end up voting for the person who was the most”eye catching “(which is not always a bad thing don’t get me wrong but for example they will be more drawn to someone doing a backflip than maybe someone who plays with groove or musicality) which sometimes make them judge a battle based solely on one impressive move instead of considering the whole round as one should( because you killed the beat you deserve the win even if your round wasn’t as coherent or solid as your opponent). But yeah sorry for rambling hope you kinda understood my point, I still love to have non dancers at battles though, the more the merrier. (Also as someone from the European scene the disrespect I felt when they referred to Alex as the”other guy”😭) . Great work, looking forward to more videos❤
This!!! I'm glad you talked about this. This definitely made me think on the negative side of bringing in non dancer fans in general to be exposed to dance by following one popular dancer... Its unfortunate that some non dancer fans come in with the perception of a dance style as what their favorite dancer does, not taking into account what the dance style is and making their own research before commenting on anybody else's dancing... I'm both someone who used to dance but is now more of a fan who habitually researches dance in general for a hobby (in addition to being someone who knows what its like to be in a fandom), so it gives me second hand embarassment when I see comments like this just putting down another dancer just to speak about their favorite dancer.. talking about their negative perception of the performance and dismissing the dancer's craft and journey...
as someone who is studying waacking and adjacent styles, i don't have any problem with the ones that focus on line (in fact lip j is one of my favorite battlers), but as more people find out about the battle scene, they tend to latch onto a popular dancer and think they are the "standard". especially on your section with suzanne vs cera and essence vs lip j (another situation is when momo called yoonji someone who "uses her face than is a dancer" or something along those lines, but her saying that was probably for drama and taken out of context), i find it unfortunate that specific aesthetics are placed onto different types of freestyling, when that goes against what it promotes. especially in something like waacking, is it all just hitting the default overheads or lines? what happened to personal style, musicality, and the importance of conveying what you feel? it was something i started thinking about when i felt a little unsatisfied with that "typical" execution, and found that i could not express the music or concepts in a way that felt authentic. of course there is a difference between showing off your own style vs not being technically capable of doing something, but many think that its always the latter. it again brings back memories of when people were critcizing javier ninja, asking "where" the vogue was. it isn't vogue fem, it isn't your most typical execution, but is that not the point? very short but well made video :) does your patreon have more content than what is shown in the preview? i was considering getting it even if shortly to watch your content
Currently I have a video about some opinions regarding this season of swf, and an analysis/ranking video about Nct Dream (which I might upload in 1-2 months on the channel though)
@@lynymII that too! but people were all like "lip j wasn't trying" and "she was just giving in for x reason" when that's not the case. lip j thought essence deserved it, and even wanted another battle because she saw her as a worthy opponent.
Yess every time i see some popular dancer's fans being salty with judges in the comments cause their fave lost a battle is so embarrassing. some even dragged the dancer who won the battle. ur fave is good but they're not gonna win every single battle 2:35 this! on dance tv shows, they tend to highlight those moments the most so i feel like many viewers think that's all that matter in dance battle this vid is so informative, hopefully u can do more videos like this on freestyle battle💗
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHHAHA this is a problem ever since SWF/SMF.. They just watched a TV Battle and think they knew all that. They think that's how it works with the underground scene and the cult-like behavior is crazy. Also, they are more focused on the technicals rather than the flow, creativity, vibe and "freshness" of it.
Phenomenal work as always! Thank you for sharing your insights and commentary for (newcomers in) the scene! Editing something like this is no joke and I appreciate the time you put into it.
thanks for the video ! On the same note, what do you think about the battle between Waackxxxy and The Crown? I was so shocked by the angry comments under the video, many people seemed to believe that Waackxxxy didn't deserve the win. To me, the results stemmed from personal tastes. I personally love Waackxxy's style, so I would have voted for her given that she slayed while I thought that The Crown was a bit off at times + his style is not what I like the most when it comes to hip hop (again, personal taste). Anyway, what did you think of that battle? And what do you think about this voting system, bcz if I am not mistaken, it's the crowd that votes, right?
Omg I saw that as well. I would say their battle was almost 50/50 (as someone who enjoys both styles of dancing) so it could have gone either way but Wackxxxy definely had a bit more of an advantage. However, I don’t get why people were being so mean just to lift up the Crown, who was praising Wackxxxy for her win and her dancing.
Yeah! I absolutely agree, they are both so good to the point that it was almost a performance rather than a battle! I don't know if you saw it but red bull uploaded a video of them reacting to their battle (it's sooo cute)@@chiquibombom1460
I agree that it could've gone either way. I'm not really sure if I like the crowd voting, but to make the judging for an all style battle "fair" is not really possible anyways. Personally I preferred The Crown's 2nd round over Waackxxy's 1st round (going by the song that played to each of their strengths), but again I don't think the result warrants hate lol
@@facts_in_fiction He copied her dance moves all 3 times and forgot to show enough of his own colorful dance style. In the first round she was much better then him the first round from him just normal for me The second round he was better but she wasn't bad either. i think the overall waackxxxy won for sure
I feel like waackxxxy is consistently good for the three rounds with the crown and she is giving the same high level energy since the first round until the third round. Also it shows how versatile she is when adapting waacking to different genre of songs. But ofc the crown 2nd round is really impactful because the song is more suitable for his genre and he is having many iconic movements. His first round unfortunately is a bit having low energy, compared to his 2nd and 3rd round.
Love your videos :) just FYI the suggested videos at the end block some of the text in the video (especially when watching on a phone), though I might be dumb and just not know how to remove the suggested videos tho lol
That was (as always) a very interesting video ! I had a question : since the preference between two competitors in a battle dance involves mainly personal taste, how judge decide who win and who lost ? It's a bit blurred for me ^^'
I would say it depends on the battle itself and what the event is for (meaning that there are certain events that are specifically for certain dance styles). If there are two dancers who dance two different dance styles and did equally well in their battles, they are going to most likely choice the one who they preferred. However, there are times in which the opposite happens, there might be a dancer that a judge personally prefers but can acknowledge that the opponent did better seeping on how the battle went. You can still have some objectivity while judging.
@@chiquibombom1460 Oh okay ! Thank you for answering ! I may not have understood well your comment, but what are these objective criteria then ? (Sorry if I made a mistake, my english is not my first language)
@@paresse7863 You’re welcome and don’t worry, your English is good! About objective criteria, I would say it depends greatly on the event and what the judging panel is supposed to be looking for. However, in general, a judge might have some objective, generic questions such as: Is the dancer’s musicality matching the music? Is the dancer dancing in a way that makes me hear and interpret the music in a new, unique way? Are they repetitive with their movement? How good is their technique? How well are they portraying the dance style and its uniqueness (mostly referring if they have a good basis of the style)? Are they copying moves or are they creative and original? Can they adapt to different music style/dance style effectively? Etc…. These are some very generic questions one might judge on with some objectivity while judging. Hope this clears it up!!!
The judges decide according to their own criteria (unless there is a specific system which is rare, it exist for some breaking events). That usually includes individuality, complexity, musicality, structure of the round and so on. It's not objective, but it gets more obvious when you know a style very well. But sometimes it's very close and can go either way, sometimes judges are really just voting for their friends lol.
Thank you for your insight 🙏 I also have a question. How far the signature of each dancer can be used for the battles without looking too repetitive? I'm asking this because i'm already watching many waackxxxy's battle, so it's becoming oversaturated for me 😅
It had to do with personal (not that serious) drama from the show. Personal fans can’t seem to separate the reality-tv made up drama from the performances; Especially when it has been squashed months ago.
just wanted to add, not all is fair in judging. My friend did booking for a top German Hip Hop dancer for a while, so we hung out with the top German dancers. At one of these one of the male dancers who has been jugding often told openly how many dancers dislike Les Twins and how they sometimes gang up on them as judges an let them lose purposefully. I've seen whole dramas unfold in French battles, then again the German dancers told us what went down behind the scene. Nationality plays a role sometimes, so does Crew rivality. Side note, because some comments make it appear as if Les Twins only do beat kill, and others are apparenly more into lyric interpretation. That's so wrong, the dudes can literally tell the songs story with their dancing, if they want to. Their biggest problem is that they became too cocky and arrogant and it's not looking nice.
Are there any other boy groups set to debut this year? I wanted to make a short video along the lines of "top 10 bg dancers debuted in 2023 you should look out for". I know about dancers from Riize, ZB1, Evnne, Xikers. Are there other idols you would suggest for the video?
I can't say if any of them are individually super interesting since I haven't looked into them much myself but is there anyone interesting from BOYNEXTDOOR? (I would have recommended a few from &team but they debuted right in Dec 2022 🥲)
I will watch and appreciate anything you post, and I'd be excited for this video... but I'd also love more videos about long-time idols' dance improvement. I find it amazing how established artists can improve. I have been thinking about this a lot as we watch Jungkook's solo artist output. Did he get dramatically better, or is that just me? I think you've mentioned Seungkwan before in a video. I'd love to see who else comes up.
