Ludi, what you said in the beginning of being able to choose the "weapon" of the regiment. I think it will apply, kinda. Because they said there will be many kinds of units. And those units could be people armed with bows, swords, lances, flintlocks. Because there will be the "production methods" for the buildings that you will create in order to create regiments. So while they may not differenciate the goods, being weapons for all of units, for example, the more powerful units probably consume more material. So if your economy can't handle 10 k flintlocks units, you may create 5 k flintlock units and 5 k archers, for example.

I think that they said that the tick will move per hour, because there are many more, smaller locations on the map compared to EU4 and days are just not precise enough. But the system will be exactly the same as EU4, but because the map is made out of smaller location, you need to have more frequent ticks to get the same level of control as in EU4. At least that is how I understood it. I didn't see anything suggesting you could actually manage the your troops at the unit level during the battle like total war.

I actually dont think that paradox will let us do anything to our units mid-combat, as paradox themselves said, they choice of hourly ticks is explained by reduced province size, meaning that you probably are able to travel through multiple provinces within a single day which requires to adopt hourly ticks instead of daily ticks. Management of battles is also very difficult to imagine or do, especially when there are several battles going on at the same time and/or in multiplayer.

Some things I'd like to see :
1 - Real units for garrisons, therefore three maintenance levels for forts, mothballed, empty, full. Also, whenever, you take a fort from an enemy, you should have to leave a garrison there in order to control the zone of control.
2 - Ability to intercept enemy logistics and to raid storage depots / supply ships.
3 - Instead of infantry / cavalry / artillery to have a total number of soldiers, a total number of horses / camels / elephants, and the number of specialised units (cavalry, artillery, medics, etc). This way every cavalry and artillery unit would be able to become a regular infantry, but not necessarily the other way around. Let's say you have breached the walls of a castle but don't have enough infantry. Simply dismount the horses and let the cannons rest while everyone takes a sword, spear or a rifle. That could of course give the enemy the ability to steal your horses or sabotage your artillery, so you'd still have to leave some guys behind.
4 - Population per location / province with details about their ages, cultures, religions and skills (or profession). Mobilising different groups for war would have certain effects on the location, province, nation and the army itself.
5 - A completely different culture conversion mechanism, based on population management. Having the ability to move people of a culture from a place (location, province, state, etc) to another. Having the ability to promote certain cultures (not just your primary one) in certain places. Having the ability to move certain radical people in or out of a place, bribe them, reform them, imprison them or even execute them, with each action having an effect on the populace. And I think there shouldn't be a promoted culture menu at all, but these should be done through stuff like official language, opening of schools, promoting of officials and population management.

  • @20adam20

I do not agree. I believe they chose hours rather than days because of the length of battles in eu4, the battles lasted weeks and months, and it was possible to recruit and add new units to the battle because they lasted so long. With the new system, battles will be much shorter in days. No total war battles sorry.

What I really really want (but is probably a bridge too far) is to *actually* be able to pull off a Cannae and encircle your enemy's army if you have a god-tier general and better flanks even if your centre is weaker and outnumbered. Having flanks who hopefully can wheel around, smash into the sides of your enemies' centre and scatter/break his reserves is already an enormous step forward compared to EU4's "two static lines shooting at each other WW1-style" system though, so as long as the flanks can actually, you know, FLANK, I will be beyond happy.

I am a bit sceptical about the hours. How are things going to evolove in multiplayer. If some players are at war it might slow down the entire game to hours to let them properly play their battle at the expense of other players not doing anything. Also this all trade goods and replenishement part is very very unforgiving for small nations. I don't really understand yet how a small nation in the game will be able to compete with a larger nation. To me it seems a smaller nation can no longer access quality to match the quantity of larger nation because of the trade goods. A large nation will be able to produce so much more trade goods to reinforce its armies whereas the smaller nation will have no trade goods, very few levies and a super small place to replenish. I would suggest a centralisation mechanic which boost commerce, mercenary availability and prices for smaller nation with less than 10 locations to boost them a little bit and avoid a seal clubbing situation. Don't get me wrong big nation will most likely win but at least they have a small fighting chance if mercenaries and economics is a little boosted to compensate.
Furthermore i would like to see how the will manage naval combat.

All in all, my biggest hope for EU5 is late game being decently playable. Having a top of the line rig assembled this year and EU4 speed 5 still slows down to an unfun degree during lull phases of the game when you're just building up and managing your provinces and economy around the early 1600's. CK3 speed 5, for comparison, just flies off the rails. Fingers crossed the later stages of the game get some attention in terms of mechanical functionality, so far the diaries look good and it might even be a playable Paradox game on launch, which is a paradox in an of itself.

so i dot mind the reinforce system but i feel like there needs to be more possibilities to reinforce cause think about it you hold and enemy province with access to a port and then you also have control of the sea area you should be able to reinforce or if you occupied a province that either has a land connection to you or another allied war participant or if it over seas along as you have sea control and a port and a province bordering completely controlled territory you should be able to but it shouldn't be available till more modern combat cause that wasn't really a thing till you start to get closer to the Napoleonic era also it should have a malice to account for reinforcing troops traveling over the seas or even though it's completely occupied enemy lands its still enemy territory and you have hostile locals unfamiliar territory or enemy remnants causing some slight issues like the resistance system in hoi4

I know its early to ask me being only 1/3 through the video, but will combat initiate when both troops land on the same tile, or will their be like fighting between armies on tiles, perhaps with a contesting effect on the province being attacked.
Or is it just the EU4 style where combat starts when an army moves onto a location hosting an enemy army.
Im just thinking, with a map so detailed, microing units on the tiles themselves might be all thats needed (instead of some kind of battle/combat screen, which i suppose also could be cool) Like defending tiles could be contested, you could implement flank bonuses etc. idk.
But lets be honest, the biggest downside of a more detailed combat system like this is the impact it will have on Multiplayer performance. I get the sense any TW style battle would have to be auto-simulated similar to the TW option to simulate/autoresolve the battles.... The battles need to be done in a way that wont make gameplay too slow for others in MP.
I also really like them dedicating a certain amount of time to rest, this should hella slow down expansion, which is good i think.

Some kind of multi-faceted system with armies coming from each side and battle orders has never been Paradox's way, and seems to me that it would enormously slow down the gameplay, and make the game way too micro intensive for most players

there is absolutely no evidence to suggest anyone should be hyped for this game. paradox has fumbled so many projects in a row that we should be approaching this only with skepticism. I will not preorder or buy this goose right out of the bag. I'll be waiting for reviews from people who aren't fanboys who stop in the middle of their videos to say "I NEED TO PLAY IT I NEED IT I NEED IT" like a baby shouting for a rattle.
that's harsh. I like Ludi and his coverage, but jesus man. the shill is strong with this video

I think they should consider some realism like you cant fight with 30-40 regiments in a line in limited space e.g. narrow mountain passes, etc.
Also seiging should be made better than eu4...we dont want to be stuck on just 74% atleast increase it every turn for a whole year (right ludi?😅) maybe a constant bombardment button that will consume 'stuff' (something important) on regular basis to keep on like forced march button in eu4 that consumes mil mana every tile.
On the other hand a siege of a fort adjacent to sea tile should go on for 'years' if not blocaded navaly.
Also not just infantry, cavalry, artillery but specialised forces like light infantry for hilly terrains, heavy artillery for seiging, light cavalry and heavy cavalry...
Presence of some kind of artillery in a province adjacent to which sea tile a naval battle is occuring should also give a negative modifier to enemy fleet.
Also not that time is slowed down, there should be no pause button but maybe swap it for really slow time like 1minute in game time for 1sec irl time thus time never stops for anyone and battles will be very interesting cuz if you are not fast enough, you can lose a winning battle.
Also i WANT forced march...i too want to defeat my enemies just by marching like Napoleon 😅

The supply depots system is great. Does this mean if you take the enemy supply depots they will start attritioning more? Mybe lose morale too

But can you wall off your provinces using supply depots and can they be lowered or raised to allow units to pass?

Wait. The reinforce stuff means that allied armies are gonna consume resources in your lands to reinforce their armies. Right?

No, but they'll consume food just being in your territory if you've agreed to it

The battles taking weeks and months have to end. Hours long to improve the tactic side of the game

Personally, I find it silly for 2 armies who are in the same province to immediately fight each other. While the Victoria 3 army system can give me a small heart attack when it suddenly redeploys my 100 regiment army to a front a continent away, I do like that armies must advance inside the province before a battle begins.

in the Middle Ages, every battle was called a divine judgement, because the outcome was uncertain even for the stronger party. man to man combat should have been avoided every time. So a total war like system would be much better suitied with a flavor of general personality, than the eu4 system.

bizarre to have (i think) supply lines but also zone of control? zone of control is just a shitty abstraction for the fact that both foraging and supply lines are untenable near enemy fortifications. just remove zone of control and use the less abstract supply mechanics. he can't say zone of control is for the AI's sake since it's already in the game that it disappears with tech.

Makes me a bit scared to play multiplayer. Wont the game take ages if people will always play on the slowest speed in wars?

    • @edwxx20001

people make their own multiplayer rules, if you NEED to play at 1 speed to play out the battles properly, then multiplayer will just force the ai to handle all of it to keep the speed above 1.

do the AI also suffer from the moral and food costs as the player? as the ottomans, having half of Europe WALK all the way to the Balkans during an early game crusade would be less likely to happen, or they would and just be dead by the time they get there. likewise, allies being farther away without fleet support would be nearly impossible. bohemia can get to and fight Austria or Brandenburg, but would be extremely difficult to go fight Russia, France, or the ottomans. while England/GB could be able to strike any costal province without nearly as much a problem.

history knows of forced recruitment in areas not belonging to the state, Frederick the Great during the Seven Years' War incorporated Saxon prisoners into the Prussian army. He also kidnapped recrutiers from Poland. I think there should be such a decision, e.g. at the cost of temporarily lowering morale in the army, manpower from the territory belonging to the enemy can be used
