    This ATLAS mount has been one of my best purchases ever for my drums! I will say, for me it's not that the wingnut is ugly . . . it's just too big (that what she said) for my liking . . . so I also switched it out for another wingnut I had laying around.

    love your videos rdavidr! I bought some atlas mounts a few months ago to put on a 12x9 and 14x10 Tom, because the Gibraltar rims suspension mount wouldn't let me place the drums close enough to each other. These toms are Rogers shells circa 1976 that are a normal amount of plus thick. After installing the mount, which was very easy, I put the toms on the l arm, and from the first test hit I immediately noticed that the toms sustain and low end were severely choked. The instructions for the atlas mount say that you shouldn't tighten the mount to the shell to tight, "it should be finger tight," so I tried doing that, but with the nylon nuts that come with it, you can't really finger tighten them at all, so I just tightened them down to where there was no more space between the washer and the nut. I tuned my Tom and mounted it in several different ways, but the toms still sounded very dead, so I had to go back to the rims mounts. Has anyone else had this problem? If there is a fix, I'd love to know

    I just got a Ludwig Signet kit in Madagascar Ebony. It is so nice. It has the Atlas mounts and the "ugly" wing nuts. I like 'em just fine myself and atlas mounts themselves are great. My other kits use suspension mounts I don't have the ears to hear a big difference between the two. My first beginner kit had through the tom tube arms (Pearl style) and when I upgraded to a nicer kit with suspension mounts I did notice a big difference there though. I love the $20 kit. I see you using that one a lot. Not too pricey to get wrecked but sounds cool to me! And the seafoam green is rad!

  • @Imabassplayer2

    I have a 13" tom with 5 lugs which is a pain to mount. Ether I mount it on a snare stand or a pearl style mount. I found the Gibraltar universal tom suspension system which works ok. I did have to modify it to reach the tension rods. This maybe the answer. Saw the mount in a NAMM video last year and thought it was pretty cool. Now I know I can buy the mount separate this could work really well. Without your video I probable would not know the mount came separate. Cheers man and your videos are great I really enjoy them keep it up :)

      There is also a rail version for the bassdrum which uses 2 lugs. I got it for my kit. Its really handy and I didn't need to drill into the bassdrum. Really cool stuff by Ludwig. Its a bit expensive but worth the money.

    I really like that wing nut, but I know, it's a matter of taste. I have plenty on my Ludwig signet kit. I like it because it's bigger and feel great on my big hands. Also I like the classic caddilac tipe look of It. Thanks for the great videos!

  • @tmont007

    I actually like the Ludwig wing nut. But, that's just me. I have ATAS mount system stuff all over my kits, I have 7 of them, 4 are ones I built with Keller shells and 3 are Ludwig kits. One is an Epic and oddly enough, since that kit has the brushed tinted brass hardware, it's the only kit that the ATLAS stuff doesn't really match color wise. (Odd since it's Ludwig (Asian made). But this ATLAS stuff is so universal, it fits every thing you can think of without having to drill holes.

    Has it affected the sustain of your drum at all? I find that certain Tom mounts choke the drum a bit, since this mounts your drum directly from the shell, did you find a positive or negative influence in sound?

    • @tmont007
      @tmont007 5 лет назад +1

      Ok, 3 years later, here's a reply. This Atlas mount system does not choke resonance. At all. I have several drum kits, two of which are Ludwig, and the other four are kits I built using Keller shells and various manufacturers of hardware. I also added the bass drum mounted consolette on all but one of the kits, that one has a 28" bass drum, so it was better for me height wise to slap the rack tom on a cymbal stand bracket next to the bass. Lots of flexibility there. And most importantly, it doesn't affect the sound of the drums at all, and there is no need to drill any holes, or use any big awkward hunks of chrome plated metal to set my stuff up. It's a home run for Ludwig. I have never really been😒 a fan of most of Ludwig's hardware. Till now. Rdavidr ( video poster) would HATE my drums. I have all Ludwig Atlas cymbal, hihat, snare, pedals.... every piece I am using right now is Ludwig, all Atlas Pro and or Classic (flat based) and the consolettes. They are all covered in those wing nuts... They're EVERYWHERE! I dig them.👍 There is one on one of my consolettes that I removed and replaced with a smaller, less protruding one since it was poking the reso head of the rack tom because of the way I have it set up. No problem. You would love this Atlas Mount stuff. It's very drum friendly as far as sound goes and not needing to butcher the shells. It's solid as granite and as a big bonus it looks awesome! Kind of a retro, late 60's early 70's look to it.

      I got a 13"x09" Racktom mounted. Atlas Mounts are really great. No damage. If you wanna see them I got a couple of Videos up on my channel. You can see the Atlas Mount a bit in one video. But its not recommended for ride cymbals. I tried to mount my 24" ride on my bassdrum. Well it did work for some time but it got really wobbly.
      But for Racktoms and lighter cymbals they are pretty awesome.

    does this choke the drum's sustain at all? i'm really looking for a good mount that doesn't make the drum sound like a cardboard box.

    • @rdavidr
      @rdavidr  9 лет назад

      +remurdereht Rim mounted mounts usually contort the head a bit since the weight of the drum pulls to the opposite side of the mount. Then mounts that are drilled into the shell usually loose resonance just because theres a chunk of steel mounted on the shell. Then of course snare stands just choke the crap out of the drum. But with this one you are using the lugs holes, so really you should gain resonance and sustain (which is what it says on the box lol). Sure the tom pulls to the opposite side of the mount because of gravity, but the way it is made it will not flex the head.
      Hope that made sense.. haha

    Hey man, question!! I'm thinking about getting one of these for my 13" tom that came with no mounting hardware. A snare basket just saps the resonance Way too much, and I didn't want to go with the regular crescent mount because even that kinda holds it back. I do like the Tama mount you have, but how does the Atlas here hold up in terms of resonance against the star mount from Tama, and a typical crescent mount?

      yeah its definitely worth it. Before I had the Atlas Mount I always had to carry 2 snare stands because I didn't want to mount the racktom from my cymbal stand. Now I got the Atlas Rail Mount and one extra mount for my Racktom. Really saves time and space.

      +Jordan Blue Compared to other tom mount options its pretty cheap

    maybe make a video asking your subscriber's to show you their kits or creative ideas (kit/hardware wise). Then you can post the vids....

    Glad to know I'm not the only person that hates ugly wing nuts. On my Tama stands they're all original Tama nuts but on my home kit its a mix'match of stands with all different wing nuts & it drives me mental.

    I highly suggest avoiding this mount on more expensive drums. It places all of the weight of the drum on two very small, focused points. Over time this WILL start to deform the shell. Most of the weight will actually push into the lower of the two mounting holes and that's where damage will start. If you are using this on a kit (again I would suggest only on cheap kits) take the tom off of the arm and set it on the floor. The time spent hanging will do just as much damage if not more than the time spent playing. It will at least double the life of the shell.

      +Chase Ferrante Sure the higher mounting position adds more counter weight, but not enough to wrap the shell. At least not enough to warp it any more than a regular shell mounted mount.

      But why would you mount a 60€ mount on a cheap drumset?

    • @rdavidr
      @rdavidr  9 лет назад

      I wanted to leave it as a virgin shell. And like I said in the vid, I was going to get another starcast mount, but the Atlas mount was cheaper and thought it was cooler haha
