1. Be aware 2. Read with a purpose, know what you are looking for 3. Figure out the plot ant the tone 4. Summarize every time you finish a chapter 5. Subvocalize 6. Read in chunks 7. Use your finger to read
This video was sooooo helpful to me! Thank you for making it! In previous years of high school , I've always maintained very high grades, but my reading speed always lagged a little behind the other kids', and so they would typically get work done much faster than me. This led to quite a lot of homework and study buildup, so I was staying up until almost 2 in the morning nearly every school day. After watching your video, I think it's finally possible for me to catch up or even EXCEED my peers in reading speed, which is a really good thing 😄👌🏻😊
my tutor registered sat on march mistakenly and i will take the exam on saturday(2 days later). Whereas my math is 90% perfect , i have started to study english just now. I'll take the exam with studies which are your videos :D. It will be a challenging experiment for me and you . I hope it shows that how great your videos :D
The method I use for myself is determining a kind of award if I finish my work in time so I rush through it to get the prize after ward... like watching one episode of my favorite TV show. Anyway... I found ur channel so helpful. Thank you for the tips
What she said about people who hate reading being at an advantage is quite accurate, I think. I like reading, and really enjoy internalizing new concept too much to be able to move on. It has cost me so many times.
Please make a video on dashes (--) and commas. I've found many articles use dashes instead of commas in places where I felt it was appropriate to use commas. Also, while reviewing for the ACT, I found a question that said something like this: "Ron, who was 16, was studying for the ACT." It was an English question, so I had to determine if it was correct as is or needed to be improved. Now I was tempted to choose "no change" but one answer choice read, "Ron--who was 16-- was studying..." Could you clarify why the latter was't correct.
Joshua Holmes dashes aren't always used in place of commas.. they are mainly for interuptory phrases.. in this sentence , 'who is 16' is a more of a modifier to Ron than an interruption and it doesn't introduce a new idea .. just a piece of information about the noun. . that's the point of appositives mainly dashes come followed by a definition of a term
We have a pretty thorough run down on these on our paid ACT course at Supertutortv.com. I realize you may not be prepping for the ACT still, but I found that fitting all the rules into a RUclips video was tough as there is a lot to cover.
Something that helped me become a fast reader was trying to read a whole book in a day. I would set aside an entire 24 hour period (this is an approximation, of course, seeing that everyone has stuff to do-so it can be like 18-20 hours) where I could literally just sit down and intensively read. This strengthened my focus, anatomization, perseverance, and celerity in reading technique. And I don't mean large books like Harry Potter or Crime and Punishment, but 200 to (sometimes) 300-page books. You can go even smaller though-Albert Camu's The Stranger is a good example of a laconic, yet challenging, novel. Also, this strategy requires a previously established, intrinsic joy of reading. If you don't like to read already, I don't think this technique would be very helpful.
I love reading, but when reading for tests I still blank out more than I should. Or if I find something interesting like when I was doing an SAT practice test and there was an interesting passage and it distracted me as well! So I get distracted if I'm reading something I like or dislike!
I took a Princeton Review or Kaplan (one of those classes) offered at my school and the teacher told us to read bits every question instead of all at once quickly but I really don't want to do that. I'm already decent at speed reading, but I still need to improve
Could you please do a video on application to colleges in the states if you're from Europe for example? Because where I'm from the school system is very different. We have longer school days and a lot less options and also time for extra curriculars. We also don't have SAT's or ACT's in public schools (some really expensive private schools offer them though). I'm just really curious since I'm from Switzerland and I'm very interested in studying in the US.
I always cannot complete SAT part one and two. I guess that is because my reading speed is too slow. Plus, lots of words worry me in the reading section. Thank you for your suggestions and I will have a try. I think they are very useful!
Good luck! You might also try working on vocabulary -- we have some suggestions for vocabulary books in our mnemonics video if you haven't seen that one yet!
please can you give us tips to catch fast English speaking . I am not a native speaker so it's a bit difficult to catch every single words thanks you and I love your channel😉
I'm SAT I simply cannot finish reading section within time. Only able to complete 3 passages. Also getting confused between two answer choices. Plz offer some advice
I've never taken the SAT but in the ACT I heard its good to skip the first passage aka prose fiction then come back because you spend a lot of time on the first passage
I would strongly advice against training yourself to remove your sub-vocalization, you retain and process information far more effectively when you use sub-vocalization. Trying to speed up your sub-vocalization is far better.
I don't think speed reading or eliminating subvocalization is always the best strategy when reading. Nonetheless, given the gain in speed, I find it a useful tool in my reading technique toolbox. Different circumstances call for different levels of comprehension. Just like sprinting, just because I know how to do it, doesn't mean I always do it or it's always appropriate.
There are only 8 steps, and they happen simultaneously. Like a download manager, only you have eight different nodes to accept the information. Practice doing these questions, with correlation with time and experiences on you life, that is why you should stay away form television. The Eight (8): What will be(past/present); How to do it(why and how things are done); What could be (chances and probabilities); Why is it (underlying natural systems/phenomenons); What is (understanding the value, of power and resources); What was (what was the benefit without such innovations, of power and resources); What is important (what creates benefit for everyone); What is needed (what creates value for the few or an individual) ....If you can think of this every step of the way then you would have essentially created a story which is infinite and increasingly meaningful, reading and comprehension will become automatic.
I find a bit difficult to understand a word without pronouncing it silently eg: bread I know what it is I eat it every day and yet my mind says it anyways How do I stop saying it in my mind?
here is a little ttip, i can understand you and your speed of speech, however, non-English speakers will not be able to understand you at all because you are speaking way to fast for them.
1. Be aware
2. Read with a purpose, know what you are looking for
3. Figure out the plot ant the tone
4. Summarize every time you finish a chapter
5. Subvocalize
6. Read in chunks

Thanx.
Zeena Alsarraf I think it meant to be stop subvocalize

Still find it hard to speed read on the SAT :( and getting all the important information down...

Great suggestion, Allan. We'll take this into consideration!

Awesome video!
You look like Taylor Swift :)
Taylor Swift has nothing to do with speed reading
Excellent video about reading techniques! Booked.

5:46 Subvocalization Practice
Can you talk about Word Within the Word lists and if that helped you with words on SAT or ACT?

Amelia Cannon that's a great idea
Amelia Cannon unless if you are going to one of the us Ivy League schools, it would be better to stay in Europe
This is amazing !

however, it is still very difficult for some one like me.....a non-native user of English language.....QAQ
the struggle is real lol
Right.... native speakers have a hard time so non native speakers have it even harder!
Truth! But, follow my tips! I am a non-native and my tips work a lot!

Stopping sub vocalizing is sooo hardd
Reading with purpose
Prompt, tone, mental map of the passage, stop subvocalization

actually it's not just about reading. you have to read as well as understand the idea of the passage at the same time..

I have my test tomorrow. I am feeling pretty negative about it. 😔
what should i do if i don't know most of the words in the readings and have no ideas what those words mean?
khannika pooh read other books
Anepicflyingbrick _ but I really can't understand the meaning of the words and I do read books nowadays.
well, everytime u find a word u dont know, check on the dictionary, write that down. I know it's hard, I'm not an english native speaker

Okey! what if that English is not my first language that how can I apply this approach to let say US Patriotic Act for a test material !?
More of SAT strategies...
Before this video I got an ad about a website that teaches people to speed read.
During this video I read 3 textbooks
That subvocalization bit confused me that sounds pretty hard to do
Can you make a video on how to speak faster like you
i always drift off when I read!
Are there really people who hate reading? I thought I always dead. But it turned out I just wasn't reading things that interest me.
I hate reading .... I just dont like reading and seeing words all the time
I find a bit difficult to understand a word without pronouncing it silently eg: bread I know what it is I eat it every day and yet my mind says it anyways How do I stop saying it in my mind?
U ROCK!!
i love you❤️
in WPM
263 wpm. Just a student so I am slow .-.
If you wouldn't mind, what's your reading speed?
Watching the video at double the speed to accomodate to speed reading
Take another Addie.
forget reading fast but read smart that is what she is saying
My teacher said, "If you don't wanna put the effort in... drop the subject."

You should be serious ... You like playing
speak slowly, read faster!!!!!
YOU LOOK LIKE SUTTON FOSTER
Your content is too cold make it warm
I'm not sure about your reading speed but speaking speed is annoying--- the way you're speaking so quickly ... and lesson about SAT ... Lol
you speak toooooooooooooooooo fast
Fits the theme
