    About me:
    I am a penultimate year Juris Doctor (Postgraduate Law) Student at the University of Sydney. This is a brief overview of what I am up to now. It is exam time and this counts as procrastination! (oops!) I am about to finish my 2nd year of a 3 year full time degree and then commencing a summer clerkship at a law firm. My thoughts on it all so far...
    Among the deliberations:
    - Comparing studying law to commerce (my undergraduate degree)
    - Law hacks
    - Juris Doctor program
    PS I had my bedroom window open while filming and the traffic noise is a bit distracting - I will make sure to keep my window shut next time I am filming.

    You can definitely hear that this was filmed in Sydney. Thanks for taking the time to make such an informative video

      Hi! Thank you for watching! This is my very first video on the JD and it was so spontaneous. One afternoon I just sat down in front of my bedroom window and filmed it. Should have shut that window!!! However, this video (which I thought would get zero views) has become so popular and I have gone on to make more. I have met people and had messages from around the world just because of this noisy Sydney vid and its been really fun :D

    Hey Julia! Thanks for a clear and concise overview of the JD program~ I'm currently a 3rd year student doing Design in Architecture(Hons.)/ M Arch. at USYD and am considering just finishing my undergrad and pathwaying into JD. Was wondering how you usually studied but most importantly - how's the sleep situation? :D

      Hi! Congratulations on your decision to do a JD. It is not an easy degree but if you’re determined to complete it you definitely can. The 3 years of study were definitely tough and I attempted to do a lot - work, mooting and other competitions. I also did 3x international exchange programs and all of that can be quite full on. If you’re disciplined about your studies you can definitely have time to do all that and get enough sleep. I had classmates who did all nighters to finish an assignment - I was more a pace and rest kind of person. I think if you set certain boundaries you don’t have to lose sleep :)

    Hi Julia,
    I’m an international student deciding between the JD at USYD and Melbourne. Would love to get your insight into reputation and employment prospects die Sydney compared to Melbourne. Many thanks!

      @JuliaKimMurphy  3 года назад +1

      Hi! The University of Melbourne is ranked quite high (above USYD) and I've heard great things. In terms of employment, I think the opportunities are pretty consistent across both cities when it comes to law. Melbourne graduates get paid a bit less but it is because the cost of living is lower than Sydney. In short, employment prospects are good in both cities. I've had friends move back to Melbourne or move between Melb/Syd or visa versa and find jobs with no issues. Good luck!

    Hi Julia, I am finishing my undergraduate degree in Commerce this year and is thinking of doing a JD next year. Is it common for students to go straight from their undergraduate course to JD or it it better to accumulate a few years of work experience before pursuing the JD program? Any reply will be appreciated.

    • @JuliaKimMurphy
      @JuliaKimMurphy  3 года назад +1

      Hi Matthew, apologies for the delayed response. It is very common for students to go straight from another degree onto the JD. In my cohort I would say most of the people were actually students going on to the JD without any other work experience. It’s quite a normal thing to do!

      Hi! I moved to NZ when I was 12 years old and have lived between NZ and Australia since then. The JD program is quite intense so be prepared to work hard, but it is definitely worth it! Let me know if you have any questions.

      Huang Giselle Have a read at some judgments. Don’t worry if you don’t understand all that’s written but if you’re familiar with what a judgment is and know what it looks like you’re on your way to being a great lawyer!! :)

      Hi Huang, I apologise for a late reply. Great that you will be a student in 2020. Your first course will be Foundations of Law so have a look at some cases and statute interpretation material. Generally, get familiar with the judicial system in Australia - what is the hierarchy of the court, the separation of powers: the judicial, the law making and executive branches etc

    I am not doing a JD as I am doing LLB Honours here in New Zealand and I am currently in my 3rd year as a lot of the papers are very much similar to the JD.
    How do you get a clerkship because I've never had any experience in the legal field, do you have any tips on getting a clerkship with a law firm as I need to have legal experience as a lot of my friends and in my law cohort are working in the legal field and need experience.

    • @JuliaKimMurphy

      Your university should have some career fairs to assist with roles. If not I would look on law firm website for when they have intakes of paralegals/clerks and apply.

      Hi Hayden, yes, last year I was admitted as a solicitor at the NSW Supreme Court and the High Court of Australia. I am currently working at an international commercial law firm. I have absolutely no regrets on completing the Juris Doctor, despite how intense and challenging it was and really enjoying working in the legal profession.

    Hi Julia! I just got in at Western Uni in Perth the JD program and I am so excited to start in February. I like this video and appreciate you sharing your personal experience with the JD program. I am quite nervous about doing my best because I need to make sure to divide my time properly so that both my toddler and studies are not being neglected, I know it's a tough study. I am not sure if you can help me with my question but could you give me tips on how to plan in order to juggle both situations? I am a hard worker who has a GPA of 3.9 but now I have been blessed to be a mom but I still want to strive to achieve more in my career.

    • @JuliaKimMurphy
      @JuliaKimMurphy  4 года назад +1

      Hi Rubi! Congratulations on getting into the JD program! It was a thrilling ride for me and I am sure you will enjoy it. You are right about it being a tough study and I think initially it is overwhelming, not because you won't understand the subjects but because of the volume of material or 'readings.' I've found that no matter how much time I dedicated to it I could not get through all the assigned readings - book chapters and cases. My advise to you would be - if you have time, then read the cases but if not, it is not a huge deal. Take notes at lectures and especially tutorials but make a summary or scaffolds for each TOPIC so that its easily digestible for your exam later. I can send you some examples of scaffolds if you want. See if your university offers tutorials outside of the regular classes. At USYD we had PASS classes which were run by other students - those, especially in the first year, were super helpful! The volume of work in a JD will be overwhelming and it doesn't stop - so at times remember to not let it sway you away from the important things in life - like your toddler. Concise notes for each topic of 1-2 pages is all you need. More often than not a 400 page case will stand for a ratio of 1 sentence. See also if you can obtain some notes from your classmates - trust me there will be some floating around from previous years. Student VIP also has a lot of materials - second hand books, notes. Good luck! You will do great.

      @@JuliaKimMurphy Thank you, Julia for your detailed and much helpful reply. I truly appreciate it. Now, I roughly know what will expect me in the studies and I see that I need to pre-plan weeks ahead to make sure that everything will be as I hope them to be. However, after reading through your reply I am looking forward to the next three years working hard in the JD program. I did not know that there are great resources in Uni's that will be so helpful students. I would appreciate it if you could send me some examples of scaffolds and thank you for offering it to me. May I ask if you have already graduated or are you still in the program? How is the job market after graduation? I read that there are more graduates than occupancies available? What has your experience be like?
      Thanks again for your insightful reply, it opened my eyes to so many aspects I did not think about before.

    • @JuliaKimMurphy
      @JuliaKimMurphy  4 года назад +1

      Rubi B Hi Rubi! Let me know your email address and I can send you some scaffolds :) I am in the graduate program on rotation until mid next year. I had to do a clerkship first and then got offered this role. A clerkship you usually complete in the summer break in your penultimate year. The job market might be harder hit now because of covid and it is quite competitive to get a clerkship but there are many other options. The key thing is getting some legal experience and you can leverage that into other roles.
