  • Join Anthony and Frances as they play through a full 2-player game of the Huang board game.
HUANG is a 2 to 4 player game set in ancient China, during the time of the Warring States. You take control of one of the Warring States, battling to unite the country under your dynasty. Each player has five different leaders: Governor, Soldier, Farmer, Trader, and Artisan.
Clever placement of these leaders and their corresponding tiles on the board is key, allowing you to build pagodas to score points, trigger or avoid wars, and instigate peasant revolts that bring down your enemies. Play is fast and addictive, lasting around 90 minutes, with a very short teaching time reflecting the elegance of the ruleset.

FYI, when you create a triangle of three same colored tiles, you can place a pagoda for free automatically. You only need to spend the green tiles/leader when you want to move/place a pagoda on a triangle that previously had a pagoda.

Thanks for the playthrough of this one. I had never heard of it prior to your video and I very much appreciate the 2-player perspective!

I've just agreed to cover this game, so this video was very timely.
When I got SERIOUSLY into boardgaming, Tigris & Euphrates was THE number 1 game of the time. I played it loads, but ended up not liking it.
I've heard this is better :)

I always appreciate Frances' commitment to correct Mandarin pronunciation. Keep it up! 加油
For Anthony, the "tze" in "Yangtze" is pronounced like buzz without any consonant sound.
Pagodas should not be in a game set in the Warring States period because pagodas are stupas - buildings for housing Buddhist relics. While Buddhism was first introduced in China during the Han Dynasty (202 BC - AD 220), its golden age was the Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618-907). It would be like using pieces shaped like gothic cathedrals in a game set during the time of the Roman Republic. For the game's setting, perhaps a piece in that shape of a paifang/pailou gateway would be more period-appropriate. Not that you have any say in this because you aren't the developer or publisher.

I like Tigris better because the conflicts are more consequential and the ripple effects are always amazing to witness. This is tamer in comparison but still a solid game.
