  • 🟡 In the last video of the intermediate level of the Dictionary to study in Spain we are going to explain the differences between public and private universities.
🟡 Currently 80% of students are inclined towards the public, 20% being private, although the percentage of the latter is growing year after year.
As always, we recommend that you follow us to find out all the news and updates on access to the university in Spain.
🟡 To address differentiation, we will talk about 4 different aspects such as: university access system, professional opportunities, campus and faculty, and university prices.
1️⃣ Access. The admission system in public universities is carried out by presenting the Selectividad exams, which can be EBAU or PCE as you could see in the previous video. Those exams, together with the high school score, will give an admission grade. This grade must be higher than the cut-off grade for that year, so depending on the university degree it may be more difficult to access. This, in a private university is easier, since in most of them there are no entrance exams.
2️⃣ Professional outings. Obtaining a university degree at a public or private university grants the same level, from the administrative and legal point of view. However, it is considered that undergraduate studies obtained in public universities have more professional value. This has a social nature and is totally subjective, but it can happen that when faced with the same job offer, more weight is given to the public studies candidate.
Another aspect of professional opportunities is that private universities have agreements with companies, so that when you finish your studies you can have work experience with companies in the sector, something that is not possible with public universities.
3️⃣ Campus and teachers. The facilities of public universities are usually more deteriorated because they are older. Both the Campus and libraries and laboratories are usually in worse condition than private universities, being newer and better preserved. Regarding the teachers, the level of the public university is excellent, but more and more private universities invest in teachers who are researchers in private companies, increasing their level every year.
4️⃣ Prices. The prices of public universities depend on the Autonomous Community and the type of degree. Prices usually range between 800 and 2000 euros per year. The case of private universities is very different, and can cost between 5,000 and 20,000 euros per year, depending on the study and faculty.
🟡 Conclusion. Choosing between one university or another is the private and personal decision of the student and his family. There are more aspects to take into account, such as the location of the faculty, the scholarship and exchange system, getting to know other cultures and people...
All of this requires thought, so you should spend time thinking about where you want to spend some of the most important years of your life.
