The director of this game went on to make Guardian Heroes so the ability to change planes makes so much sense. Even the fighting system was used as a canvas. Thanks for making this video SNES drunk, more people should know about it.
This is why I love this channel. I'm a huge Guardian Heroes fan amd had no idea this existed.
Pittsburgh Boyertown nice👍📼📺🎞
And also two of the Bleach games on DS
Honestly, this game is an occult revelation. How did they make a 4 player fighter this fast and deep on a cartridge on Sega Mega Drive without witchcraft?
0:32 4 player back in the day, nice lol virtua fighter 2 on genesis is so bastardized compared to saturn and this does so much better lol layering like guardian heroes too
Because of Treasure, a badass development team
This game was so special during that Era. Having all your buddies over to play for hours was the best.
@@daboolaj VISUALSHOCK! SPEEDSHOCK! SOUNDSHOCK! NOW IS THE TIME TO THE 68000 HEART ON FIRE!
Seriously the Motorola 6800 processor in the Genesis is more powerful than people give it credit for and a skilled developer like Treasure were able to absolutely push it to It's limits.
Treasure said that Games like Alien Soldier , or Yuyu Hakusho were impossible on SNES 🤷♀
Old asss 1988 Megadrive processor destroys SNES procssor(even if it is more recent ) Motorola 68 000 was a beast from the arcade hardware.
SEGA managed to lower its price by ten.. That's the secret wizzardry. 😉😉
Nobody could program on the Genesis like Treasure could : D And they rocked the N64, too!
And the Sega Saturn.
That ain't true You liar !
Help me, Marinaaaaaaa!!!
Guardian Heroes was damn fine in it's time. Co-op combos were quite satisfying and Versus mode had EVERY character model available (looking at you 😏 Def Jam: FFNY).
@@Marzimus
Guardian Heroes still looks impressive IMO. Much better than most indie pixel art games.
Hi, Snesdrunk!
As a brazilian, I can confirm that the text WAS CHANGED to a badly translated portuguese. It was enough to understand everything, just not very professional. Sega had a good relationship with its brazilian publisher Tectoy (for whatever reason) and YuYu Hakusho (the anime) was a big deal here, so for some miracle we got the game
YuYu Hakusho was a really, really big deal in Brazil. It was one of the most popular animes in the late 90's, perhaps the most popular one after the tremendous success of Saint Seiya (also known as Knights Of The Zodiac).
I own the Brazilian cartridge and the translation is indeed very bad, but it's there. It's also a very bad hacking job, where they butchered the characters' names to fit in the same tiles as the original names (i.e. "Urameshi" became "Urai"). The game also randomly switches between Portuguese and Japanese as you play. It's an incredibly poor translation job.
What trickery did Treasure use on the Genesis to do the things they made that console do?
The Yu Yu Hakusho anime series is my childhood, and it was popular in my country back in the 90s (under the name Ghost Fighter). Also this game also later inspired the gameplay of Guardian Heroes and Bleach DS.
Which Bleach DS game? I thnk there was 3 released here in NA.
- Blade of Fate (I think this one is a fighter while the others are Strategy/RPGs
- DArk Souls
- 3rd Phantom
Bleach DS 2nd: Dark Souls (aka Kokui Hirameku Requiem)
Needless to say Yuyu Hakusho is one of the best manga\anime ever made.
Of course there's no slow down, *Blast Processing!*
Now say the same thing while you're balls deep. lol xD
Dr retro has a great article on Blast Processing. It has nothing to do with speed and it wasn't ever used on a real game. It's just direct access to video memory to show an image on hi-color mode, but you lock the cpu BLASTING per pixel color information, so the cpu is locked painting the screen and you have no room left for game logic. Then, nope, this isn't Blast Processing.
@@jmbenetti GENESIS DOES BLAST PROCESSING and you are mad 😆
I thought this was a low end Saturn Game. For a Mega Drive it’s amazing
This looks gorgeous, animation is very fluid....really looks like you're playing an anime.
Wow! I'm Brazilian and had no idea that my country was the only one other than Japan to receive this game. Makes a lot of sense, because the anime was pretty huge here in the 90s and Tec Toy, the official Sega representative is really aware of the particularities of Brazilian culture, and was really focused on what the youth wanted at the time.
They're still active, though their demographics have changed to serve older people nostalgic for their Master System and Genesis games. They also sell Sonic and Knuckles hoodies, which are amazing.
My friend and I found this game on his Everdrive cart with the English patch and we were blown away by just how fun it was with 3 players.
Don't believe you sorry
@@cazamilfs8945 And nobody believes megalodon sharks exist. Just saying.
@TripleDoubleNoTAS Still works perfectly fine. I don't see why it wouldn't.
Total length of video: 320 secs.
Total length of "SEGA Drunk": 4 secs.
1.25% of the video was spent listening to "SEGA Drunk."
Thanks, you never disappoint me
I could've gone for a full 10 seconds. Maybe next time.
Which is not enough!!!!
I've never heard you say "any way you can" in such an imploring voice. This game must really be something.
yeah we would get this game here in Brazil only 5 years later in 1999 funnily enough
Cara.
I have my brazilian copy, so glad it was released in Brazil thanks to TECTOY.
Treasure also developed Bleach: The Blade of Fate for the DS. First thing I was reminded of while watching this.
what do they call a "battle royale" in snesdrunkland? a battle royal... with cheese
Look at the big brain on Brad! But I wouldn’t know. My girlfriend is a vegetarian, which pretty much makes me a vegetarian as well. But I’m sure that’s a tasty burger.
A battle royale with molasses, judging from my personal experience.
It's coz of the fuckin metric system
Everything Is Better With Cheese
The soundtrack on this game is out of control, Treasure absolutely firing on all cylinders for this one
Omg... I used to play this game back in 1996 with my older brother.... This was the shit. Here in Brazil everyone loves yuyu Hakusho. We didn't own the cartridge, so we had to rent it... We absolutely loved this game. So much action. So many awesome moves!!! I wish I still had my old mega drive... Great video, man.....
Yu yu Hakusho sunset fighter is translated for Brazilian Portuguese (very poorly) but translated
Fala Luiz. Esse jogo eu consegui jogar no Mega Drive muito tempo atrás, quando era moleque. Bom demais
@@superarty7 Talvez seje o melhor de yu yu Hakusho tbm
I love that they changed the name of the Toguro brothers to "Toguro" and "Toguri" lol.
I feel like it’s been a long time since you have given such a ringing endorsement! Excited to try it
It's my birthday and you drop a video on a game based on one of my favorite animes and on my original video game system,
Thank you so much, love your videos, keep up the great work
A new SNESdrunk video? Always a great way to start the day!
great content as always man; i appreciate your output quality and quantity. always look forward to these!
Awesome review as always. Glad you got to enjoy your time with it and hope others take your advice and check it out for themselves too
Just gotta say, The Brazilian dub for the Yu Yu Hakusho anime here in Brazil was freaking great; although I am pretty sure people who prefer a more faithful translation would lose their heads if they listened to it for more than a minute :p
I just want to say, I am having an absolute awful day today, I feel horrible, and anxiety levels are dealing 9999 DMG.
But your videos, even only at bite size, really help with the stress and bring comfort at a time I could really use some.
I sincerly thank you for that, Drunk. Really.
It’s also on the Japanese megadrive mini
omg......great vid and I'm glad I found your channel, I've never heard of this before and I'm mostly a retro gamer. Those lucky Brazilians
I had this cartridge when i was a kid, my dad got it from shanghai. We had no idea this game was so rare. Of all the games in sega, this and bare knuckle 3 were the ones you can play any times without getting tired of it.
Thank you soooooooo much for reviewing this! Got the game on first release and never let go since.
This game is peak SNESDrunk - no hidden gems bullshit, zero clue this game existed, disbelief that there are *still* incredible games to be found 25 years later
Nice, you can see the parental DNA of Guardian Heroes in the multiplane multiplayer fighting
I LOVED Yu Yu when I was a kid. It was my second favorite show on Toonami. If would've known about this when I was a kid, I would've shit my pants
Wow! What happiness to see this game here. When a played this game in "anyway I could" I was amazed! I can't believe this awesome graphics in Genesis. I think if Genesis have had a good magazine as Nintendo have had Genesis have had more fans in the ninties.
Greatest Megadrive fighting game ever. So many good memories from this!!! TOGURO 100%
Spot on, been playing this on and off in MP since the late 00s and it rocks.
This game set the foundation on which Smash Bros was built: 4 players, universal special inputs, block button.
My favourite fighting game for the Mega Drive.
This probably came to Brasil because this Cartoon is huge here. It was a game changer for dubbing and also is one of the best animes of all time.
After knowing it was made by treasure, it made me realize this is probably a precursor for Guardian Hero's battle system. I miss treasure.
God damn treasure. Makes me want to actually play a fighting game like this
interestingly Bleach for the DS plays almost exactly like YuYu Hakusho, and also made by Treasure. Different anime but in a way a spiritual sequel in terms of gameplay. It also revealed the bankai of many characters before it even appeared in the manga and anime!
Looking forward to the next podcast!
--->>> I was not aware that this game exists, thank you so much, from an YuYu fan from Brazil!!!
I played this game to bits when I was young. The 4-player battle royale was awesome with friends. I miss having friends.
Bro I wish I had this as a kid I would’ve been beyond happy my favorite anime/manga series mixed with my favorite genre of gaming
Loved this game in highschool, but I only ever got one other person to play with me. Smooth, the characters all feel good and the special moves and fighting styles are all so close to the show.
I was just watching your Prowrestling games vid. Hiya snesdrunk!!
Greetings from The Netherlands.
Cheers
Nice. This game happens to be a region exclusive on the JP Mega Drive Mini which I picked up. It also came with a 6-button pad so extra nice.
I'm brazilian an I remember having a magazine with a entire article about the game. It was one of the few times that I wished to have a Mega Drive instead of a SNES hahaha. Great game! Tks for remembering!
TREASURE!!!!!!!! One of my fav developers in the world! When are you going to do a vid on just treasure games??????
Very fascinating thank you! 👍🏻
This game is amazing. Original, great graphics, gameplay and sound. Lot of characters with moves super faithfull to the source. Genkai is my favourite.
That's one of the best fighting games I've played back then.
Hands down, one of the best Yu Yu Hakusho games I've played.
Yu Yu Hakusho was HUGE here in Brazil along DBZ and Knights of Zodiac, it doesn't surprise me they released it here, nor does the fact they didn't bother to translate it since they knew we were gonna play it anyway 😁
We brazilians do love Yu Yu Hakusho. It actually had some great SNES games too. I grew up playing it on game boy and SNES.
Amazing review
One of my favourite Mega drive game 👍
You should do a video on skitchin' was a pretty cool game back in the day. Anyways, keep up the good work my dude!
seriously runs as smooth as a Saturn Title. that's impressive
Hey Drunk, please make a video on Advanced Dungeons and Dragons: Eye of the Beholder for the SNES. It is a super difficult game and more people need to know about this one
It's a port from a very famous PC game, so I don't know if that's really obscure
Retro Archives there are tens of thousands of downloads on ROMs like Mario and Zelda. Even obscure games have more downloads than EotB. I get what you mean though
A true classic, I remember my mom bought it as a gift and I still play it today
4 player coop on this is crazy! Was watching this on local tv at the time, an anime fighter thats faithful to source material reflected in their moves set.
we got the japenese cartridge for this back in 98 and the playthrough was unreal. Finishing the story mode unlocks the ultimate 3 on 1 battle and its insanely hard and fun.!
I loved the anime as a kid. Everyone was still fawning over DBZ at the time but I was all about this one!
Real sprite scaling, on the Genesis. Treasure will always be the king!
This is my childhood.. I love this game as a kid
Damn i love Latin America. We were so hooked on some animes in the 90´s that we got our own anime adaptations with less censorship and editing and we even managed to get some obscure games released outside of Japan just for us too!
Fun fact: This game was put on the Japanese Mega Drive mini as well.
It can't be stressed enough that Treasure is one of most talented dev teams oat. Their legendary run on the Gen/Megadrive alone, is enough for me to make that claim. Not alone Mischief Makers, Radiant S, Ikaruga, Gradius V, Sin and Punishment etc and anything else they've made. I need to play this alot more.
This game was a pretty nice surprise for me as a fan o fighting games, like 6 months. Was a SNES kid so most of the genesis library is kind of new to me. This game rocks!
Will be, or it is, ready for online play using fightcade 2!
This game's ost screams "Treasure", cool review!
Yep. Of course the template for Guardian Heroes would be a great fighter. I think the DS Bleach games (among others) used this template as well.
Were there any other 3+ player fighting games on consoles before Smash Brothers? This is pretty crazy, I never would have expected that. That's pretty impressive, and it's also easy to play, good music, great animations, etc. too! I guess it's true, Sega Does what Nintendon't!
This game is awesome... specially in birthday's party with some drinks jajaja (real story). Exelent video as always.
That reminds me of Guilty Gear Isuka.
Except this game is actually GOOD.
@@MonsieurMaouji
Isuka had some quirky mechanics, but if you could get four players together, there was fun to be had.
@@jwill7998 Still....having a button to MANUALLY face the opponent when every other fighter auto turns, though.
@@MonsieurMaouji
When you have more than one opponent, that feature is necessary. However, it you should automatically face your opponent in 1v1 matches. Like I said, it's fun with four players.
@@jwill7998 Eh, maybe I might look into it again sometime.
you can do combos and air combos in this game. the first game i played that you can air combo. it was way ahead of its time.
Look at that parallax, too!
This has a awesome combo system which allows you perform one-hit-kill with many characters. It was super hot here back then (China).
Played this game back in the day and it's totally awesome.
I own this game as well as the official soundtrack for it. This is my favorite fighting game on the Mega Drive. This is very fun to play with 4 friends! You can do some serious team-infinites if you can get the opponents sandwiched between you and your partner.
Kuwabara has a corner infinite if you do Forward+Heavy Punch into his Down-Up Dimension Sword move, dash in again after being pushed back, rinse and repeat.
Would love to see a list of your top 13 favorite genesis games! I think it would make for an extremely interesting video, and is something id be genuinely curious to know the ranking of. Please and Thank you.
Very very cool , I think I'll buy it for my Genesis 😃
I have a physical cartridge bought so many years ago, it's a really fun game!
Makyou Toitsusen has a very active scene in Brazil to this day.
We were lucky here in Brazil because of TecToy
I love this game i remember playing this all afternoon with my friends back in the 90s great times
Cheers oh brother of the microchip and the Sprite. Initially this game looked like wannabe pap but now I'm gonna check it out. Top upload
Looks pretty amazing, I only issue I can see is the shadows flickering in 4 player modes. Probably could've done without them altogether.
I loved this game, played back in the day
Any chance you’ll do more modern but not too modern games? I’d be interested in n64, ps2, GameCube etc. I really like your style and think you’ve hit the point of diminishing returns on the 16-bit era. Thanks, keep up the great work!
Excellent 📼
This is my favorite game back then... I always think that there's a secret character back then because whenever I look at the character selection screen, there's always a space in between chuu and Toguro Brothers
It’s on the Japanese MegaDrive Mini. It’s $100 on Amazon last I checked. I also have the Japanese MDMini, Retrobit has wireless Sega Saturn and Genesis controllers that work really well, just be sure to update the dongles. Yuyu Hakusho was the motivation for buying the MDMini but some games are questionably absent from the Japanese mini.
Criminally underplayed. I always thought of it as SNK like, with the advanced fighting mechanics being simple to execute. Great for 16 bit
had hours of fun with this game, 4 player brawl is awesome. I even spent hours practicing the best combos for each character. My favorite was the flying hands guy who could heal himself, since you could watch your friends kill each other while healing yourself in the background... they soon caught on to my evil plans, but the character has a very good set of keep away moves too. Eugene (the mc) is easily the most overpowered as he can combo his "super" with a basic throw which will 100% result in a "stunned" state he also has one of the longest combo chains - meaning 1 grab from him could result in GAME OVER for the victim, so 1v1 he is very tough to beat. I use Vincent in 1v1 as his moves involve a 50/50 game after you knock down an opponent, pretty fair and fun to use.
PeaceKeepers is contender for best beat'em'up of all time. Branching story paths, taunts, special moves, vacuum grabs, secrets, spiked bats, and the classic Jaleco staple: Angry Mode. 😍 Team Pure Heart for the win!
I love the anime and it was quite popular in my country. The title was changed to Ghost Fighter.
The Dark Tournament saga is what made Yu Yu Hakusho a great anime.
Long time fan from Brazil here! Do you know Side Pocket? I think it maybe has already been featured in one of your sports games videos, but it's a pretty good snookers(?) game. Sorry not been one of your Patreons but hope you have a great rest of your day.
