- SPD mountain bike shoes have become a little too complex over the last few years, making it challenging to find a simple shoe that’s ready for long days of pedaling and good for hiking or lounging around camp. @pearlizumi went back to the basics with the Canyon, making an uncomplicated cycling shoe that ticks all the boxes and doesn’t look like one. In our latest video, Neil reviews the lace-up Pearl Izumi Canyon. Find the full review at bikepacking.com/gear/pearl-iz...

Always looking for shoes that don't look like I've stolen them from a bowling alley or just stepped off a spaceship when I'm not on my bike. Thanks for this review!
I bought some Shimano AM5s'. I think they look good.
Thanks team,
I built a custom Timbejack for trails and camping. Love riding mountain again. Why have I spent the last ten years on the road and gravel, I can’t explain. Trail is so fulfilling to the soul. I’ve been looking for trail worthy, long distance multi use SPD shoe. I’ll try them. Also, been a Pearl Izumi fan for decades.
Thanks for the review!! I was in need of a new pair of laced spd shoes and frustrated with choices. Coming from a running background you can throw the laces away and put in speed laces. It is a better fit than laces and zero lace issues and all you have to do is slip the shoe on and off.
oh, interesting, thanks for the info. I may check those out.
I wear Exustar SPD sandals and have for four years now. I will wear them almost all year round. I love SPD sandals so much, they are so incredibly comfortable. However I would definitely be down for trying on a decent pair of shoes.
Love it! Thank you. Do you have a winter SPD shoe review as well?
Awesome & Thanks :)
Saw this notification come through and said our loud f*ck yes! Because I'm so sick of the finicky boa. Maybe I'm cursed but these things gum up and die too often!! Thanks for the review Neil!
Lol, thanks Alec.
Damn! For its price and durability I think its the best bike shoes the market can offer
these shoes look great! the tread pattern looks like a Pirelli Cinturato Gravel H
I will always shill the Shimano EX-700 for bikepacking. Similar style to the Pearl izumis here but I really like the offset boa enclosure.
What is the shirt you have on ? i always like your flannels, but this one looks super nice , like wool ?
Hello Neil! Where did you get this slick-looking hat? Thanks :D
Our web-store, but this style is currently sold out. That being said we have more that just arrived and should be available soon. First dibs goes to Bikepacking Collective members when they are published on our web-store, you can find out more here: bikepacking.com/join/
May be a dumb question, but these are SPD specific? Can I use Crank Brother pedals with them? Thanks.
FYI for wide feet, I tried them on, still too narrow. When I stepped on the insole my feet were several mm over the edge. The slight turn in curve on the big toe side is too much, should be kept straight and way too much curve on the pinky toe side. Lake wide are are my daily shoes with the extra wide for long trips.
good point, I have narrow but very flat feet and they work from me.
Thanks. I found they fit small and narrow...
just got my first gravel bike, coming from roadbike, and i dont now what type of spd shoe to get :/ theres so many different styles of MTB shoes. and they're all so expensive..
Would these also be suitable for use with flats or are they really only to be used with cleats?
I would just get the flat version, same shoe just with no cleat cut out.
@@BIKEPACKINGcom Cool, thanks!
@@BIKEPACKINGcom what about using these with a dual sided pedal? My gravel bike pedals have one side flat, the other side spd and I love a flat shoe.
Im simply too cheap for boa. Love my bontrager multisport shoes
They certainly add to the cost, I love how PI sent another pair of laces, just because...
I was they would make one with boa.
I’ve never liked the way laces just bunch up on the shoe after you tie them. The lace loop is a great idea though. The way you tied yours up in the video looks like you would be loosing 4-5 watts!!! 😂
my feet are narrow, so I have a lot of extra slack, thats for sure!
