I was there for four days, we got there a day early and the pre concert party was an experience in itself,. All I can say is it was a seminal moment in my life. I was 19 and even though I grew up in Los Angeles I had never even come close to anything like this before or since. It was heaven and hell all rolled into one, a crucible that I am so glad I went through. Thank God for The Wonderful Wizard of Waz. He gave us a present that we can never show adequate appreciation for.

I was there for all three days! It was awesome! My favorite was day 2 with Santana in the afternoon, and The Kinks at sunset! This is a film I will go see! As an event, it had the best vibe I had ever felt at an event. And it was HOT!! But I would go again!

I worked for ON TV, and by accident was mistaken for the representative for ON TV who had purchased booth space, I was given backstage passes, beer tickets, and a police motorcycle escort the next day because the line to get in was backed up to Sierra Ave. A cop saw my badge and escorted us to the VIP section. I was backstage in line with Ray Davies of The Kinks (not knowing who he was) he started talking with me and asked me what I thought of The Kinks, I said "They're okay" he politely smiled. After I got my beer, I went up to the front of the stage to see the next group, and guess who it was? The Kinks, Ray Davies looked down at me and smiled, and then they started jammin, I felt like a total idiot! But had a great time, thanks to the good people at UNISON, who drove up to me and said "On TV where have you been? we have been waiting for you hop on the electric cart!" It was because I had my On TV sales shirt on!!! what luck huh?

I went to both festivals... Hell, I even have a few unused tickets left! What a blast it was for a 16 year old to spend three days there. I have so many memories of it! My father was the California highway patrol liaison to the concert, and was in charge of traffic control at the first event. I remember him bringing me with him in a state vehicle up to this house that Steve Wozniak appeared to be running things out of. He gave me a handful of tickets and a backstage pass for Pat Benatar!

I went to both US Festivals. The first one was better... no cops... people selling drugs in the crowd (i didn't do drugs but it was cool) the third day my brother and his GF had gone home I was on my own wandering to the ampitheater as morning broke and then waiting for the Dead to go onstage with Bill Graham on horseback going slowly past me surveying the place. I wanted to yell "Eat A Peach" to Bill but decided against it and observed him go past me in silence. 1983 brought more bands with players my age like U2, INXS but to see Tom Petty (RIP) The Police, T-Heads, Santana all in one place meant you were able to scratch so many bands off your bucket list. I wish one day they would put all the film/video together from both years and release with them in HD with 5.1 sound. I'm sure they could do it.

The DUST Festival was an incredible concert. The beer gardens on top of the hill were insane. All ice cold canned beers were $1 each. They overlooked the crowd and stage, and had their own entertainment. I was told Wozniak hired circus performers and told them to just mingle with the crowd and do their thing. I saw mimes, clowns, people on 10’ stilts, sword swallowers…and 300,000 other wasted people wandering around. It was awesome!

What about it? To be quite honest, though I was there (Devore is still only 5 miles from my home), I'm glad 1982 is receiving its due with its own doc. 1982 was historic and had never been attempted before. Over the years, I've become irritated that with all the classic bands that appeared over both years, ALL anyone seems to remember is that one day featuring the metal acts (who weren't even at their best). I'm certain if this doc is successful, ICON, UNUSON and PLUM will consider a sequel.

Did I miss something here? I was at the US Festival and yes, I did take the blotter acid with the official US FESTIVAL logo imprinted on each sheet. I was there the night the Clash played. First of all, they hung a HUGE banner behind them on stage that read "THE CLASH WILL NOT BE SOLD". I didn't understand the full backstory on the sign but, clearly, the band was pissed off at the management, on some level and in some way. The set ended with the band being UNPLUGGED, the lights going out the stage being hijacked by the festival promoters. Yet none of this seems to appear in this documentary. Hell, THAT was what MADE the concert! To take nothing from the CLASH themselves, certainly one of the most, if not the most intense musical act I've ever seen.

    Heavy Metal Sunday 1983
My buddies and I were headed to the concert the night before so we could get a head start on the event. I decided that I was not going to park in the dusty fields miles down the road.
I ended up driving to Glen Helen Regional Park and passed an unmarked off ramp. Turned back around and that ramp got me to an open area where we parked for free and partied up that night. The next morning we found that we were extremely close to one of the entrances on the east side. (Note: Another buddy of mine was an electrician at the show and tried to contact me because he had an extra backstage pass that I could have used. Story of my life.)
Got onto the grounds and found our area as close to center as possible, but made sure we were just above the mud and the water cannons. I loved how everybody cooperated and were super cool. The crowds towards the middle and back set up themselves up where aisle ways were made so people could get around.
Hot as hell but the show kept our minds off it and between sets run over to get wet. What a kick ass, ultimate line up of bands for the day. During Van Halen's set we started slowly moving towards the gate as we watched Eddie and the boys jam away.
Once Happy Trails started we took off to the car and took the same ramp out that we got in with.
Going back down the Interstate 15 I remember seeing all the cars in that dirt field tied up with no where to go since the traffic was so bad. We cruised on down the freeway smiling and laughing all the way home and made it to West Covina easily within an hour.
What a life I had back in the day in Southern California! Would not trade the experiences for anything.

It was phenomenal, we captured three color baloons from the beginning of the three day Festival and used them as bean bags to rest upon, but instead of beans we let out some of the air and were able to sit comfortably on them, just air. My cousin Pedro, our Friend Rocky R.I.P. and myself ran out of beer the first day because we shared it with everybody. Then we bought and borrowed beer from everybody else The Fountains at the end of the park provided much needed cooling from the heat and the crowd was an ocean of people. The music was just awesome I was right in front most of the time watching Carlos Santana, The Police, Fleetwood Mac, Pat Benatar, the Kinks, Talking Heads, Jimmy Buffet,The Ramones, The Split ends, The Grateful Dead, Eddie Money, Tom Petty, The B52's and a bunch more. The Technology Fair on the other side of the park was just as impressive, I wish I was as savvy as I am now although the next year I went to computer programming school and used Apple computers for the first time. I am now a film maker and work for the biggest airline in the world. I want to Thank Steve Wosniac and Friends for the Great opportunity to be part of the best 3 day concert of my lifetime. I only went to the Friday show in '82 - but one couldn't ask for a better line up of contemporary, at-their-peak bands. I mean B-52s, Oingo Boingo and the Talking Heads all in one day?! Other awesome memories include running into Ray Bradbury and Steve Bartek in the tents and actually getting a chance to chat with both.

I lived in OC CA and was a Freshman in HS and found out about the 82' US from a guy in my math class who had an US shirt that said Tom Petty. The May 83' one was more publicized. As a freshman in College in 1986/87 they made you take Intro To Computers and remember reading about Apple being formed in a No CA garage by the 2 Steve's, Jobs and Woz. In those day's most ppl had no idea what role computers would play, and it wasn't until the mid 90's that the internet with a 1440 dial up modem came around that your average Joe saw the possibilities. I remember watching the stock for Ebay, Microsoft, AOL, Amazon and others go from $30-$40 a shr to $160 in a matter of days, then do 2-4 for 1 splits and be right back at $160 within a week. Talking in generals but that's not far from the truth, and I just remember wishing I had the kind of dough to buy these higher priced flyers. I did buy Netscape which I believe was bought by AOL, but overall missed out on the big green, and the smaller tech stocks, which was mainly what I had crashed to 0 in 2000.

My husband worked the 1982 event, the video projection equipment, and I was able to accompany him. We had backstage passes, and I still have the photos I took of Jackson Browne and jimmy buffett backstage by their trailers. We were up on those huge towers in shade with coolers of drinks, and I remember I felt so sorry for the people down below in the dirt, it was so hot! We stayed at a hotel every night, it was great. Best three day concert ever, and so many of my favorite bands, including Fleetwood Mac. Great memories!

I went with 4 buds on a whim to metal day in 83, turned into a two week drug, booze, sex and rock n roll party that never stopped. I should write a script about the experience, car overheated on I-5 so we cut over to the coast for cooler temp, stopped about midnight for the night at a bonfire on the side of the road with a few hundred people all headed to the show, day of the show we ran out of money and we dug away the dirt burm and taxied people the 2 miles to the entrance for $1 apiece, they were in the trunk, on the roof, hood everywhere they fit but we made bough for tickets, when I got in the showI met an old friend I hadn't seen in years, after the show he couldn't find his car, we looked for two days and I finally drove him back to San Diego where I proceeded to party for two weeks(his friends got tired of waiting for him and hot wired his car and drove it back), some way some how I got enough money to buy gas and drive back to the Bay Area, drove all night and when I got back my friends were waiting, ready to party, which I did! 19 years old, now I barely leave the house LOL! Good memories 😄

Via official releases and bootlegs, I have acquired most of the footage of Heavy Metal Day `83 (the day I attended), Full sets from Van Halen, Triumph, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, and Quiet Riot. I still need the full sets from Ozzy Osbourne and Scorpions...only have the few songs that were on the Showtime special. But a full-on documentary of the `83 fest would be great!

They say they had the money but I remember this differently. It was hot yes, the hottest days ever they couldn't keep water flowing to the crowds. They even put out sprinklers so that people could cool off, but as the water flowed out it became warm. Then the mud fun started. They had every band you'd wanted to see back then.
Behind the scenes of the concessions they had the beer (I believe was sold by them) near the stage and the food (sold by outside companies) far away. Alot of families lost money on that venture, my parents included.

    • @williamboardman9476

We brought milk gallon jugs....(I mean, you're at the edge of the desert, in a dust bowl.), and water fountain rings were UP TOP...that MADE the mud trails DOWN into stage front area. Fire cannons atop the speaker scaffolding towers, every 500 feet or so. And Yeah, water got warm as it came down. I don't remember buying anything to eat, or drink, nor any sleep.

I think seeing how great a time we had setting up, how much fun the people had while the music is playing, the kids, Steves' wife was either expecting or had the child. I don't remember clearly. But him on stage in the pit serving up drinks is rad. Backstage, the guys up in the towers, the balloons as Fleetwood Mac come on. People want to see reps of who they are. Not to mention, at least a full song or two.

The `82 fest looked like it was very cool...a lot of great bands, etc...but I was at the `83 fest and I'm wondering why there appears to be no documentary of the `83 fest in the works??
I don't know if you consider the `82 fest to be somehow more significant, but the `83 fest was the larger of the two, the more well-known of the two, and the more "notorious" of the two, if you will.
I've always wondered over the years, why there hasn't been a documentary made of US Festival `83.
