      PTFE is ok to pack out threaded fittings on rads bib taps or tanks but you really don't need any of these products for most compression fittings. Many years ago I did some work on my parents home that was built in the mid fifties. It was plumbed with compression fittings throughout and there was no sign of any sealant because it just didn't exist back in the fifties. Same thing with my house in the same street and my partners house in present time. Compression fittings just won't leak when fitted squarely so the olive can grip and seal as that's what they're designed for. PTFE was developed for the NASA space programme back in the late sixties and the first domestic application of PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) was used for non stick frying pans because basically nothing would stick to it, especially water. I often used Petroleum Jelly when plumbing in taps, toilets and showers because it lubricated the fittings so they could be tightened without strain and it 's completely waterproof. Most of these modern sealants are just a money spinner for manufactures and are promoted by the plumbers on youtube.

    I think I will use liquid PTFE in future as I've had loads of leaks using the tape. Judging by the number of RUclips videos showing the correct way to use tape I'm not the only one who has problems with it. Today was a case in point. I live in Croatia where you can't buy compression valves. I wanted to replace a leaking push fit plastic valve but could only buy a brass ball valve with ends for 1/2" iron. As the pipe is Hep2O I used 15mm compression to 1/2" male adapters each end of the valve. Initially I used the tape and one joint weeped slightly. I did it again with the liquid, waited 3 hours for it to cure and this time no leak.

      No I don’t try ptfe tape to be honest I’m same had many leaks with it before

    Loctite 577! Only thing I use now! Along as there is no pressure for couple minutes to let it set. Also great on outside taps as you don't need to tighten it up. You just add it to the male thread. Screw it on till its straight. Wipe off excess and leave for couple minutes.. Great stuff.

    • @SmartPipePlumbing
      @SmartPipePlumbing  2 года назад

      Think I will eventually move over to 577 just thought I’d try the cheaper stuff first

      I’m looking forward to the video to see how the Flomasta stuff holds up. I was all geared up to take the plunge with Loctite and then saw the price!! I thought my browser had made a mistake. 😀. It all comes down to curing times for me. If I’m hanging a rad, I don’t want to be waiting 3hrs for the stuff to dry. I suppose, on a rad job, I could do the tails first, before even draining down the system, thereby getting maximum drying time.

      577 is over priced at £ 30 + per bottle , I use super power exactly the same stuff , it sets in a minute and is pressure tight in 5 mins , get it on eBay or Amazon about £ 10 a bottle.....happy days. 👍

    Been using flowmaster liquid ptfe for about 5 years and never let me down. Little tip make sure you push the lid on snug then turn bottle upside down 10 minutes prior to using as this saves time using the bottle as an air puffer trying to get the stuff out of bottle or by two bottles and decant them in one.

The front page (I’d recently had a discussion with my missus about Sigourney Weaver and how she was a sex icon back in the 1980’s. She refused to believe me…) headline was “SEXY SIGOURNEY IS BACK”. It had a review on Aliens in it. Naturally I kept it, took it home and threw it at my missus proving my point. 🤣🤣🤣
