Believe it or not the active aero on supermodified racecars works very similarly. they use gas shocks and when enough air flows over them they flatten out and create less drag.
While a lot of these guys are idiots... I still appreciate that some of the rich guys have balls to push their expensive cars instead of leaving them in a garage all the time.

@@texaswunderkind Corvettes all have limited slip differentials now, not solid rear axles like these Mustang GTs, and especially the ones from the last 20 years handle well. They have set many track records on the Nürburgring. I think you are thinking of mustangs and camaros.
I am always entertained by seeing so many drivers who have way more bravado than skill, and how they get into trouble because of it. Case in point, the C7 driver at 2:25 showing a complete lack of understanding of what to do when exceeding the track limits, and then driving over kerbs, with resultant damage to front and undertray.

On the one hand, it prevents a massive crash but on the other hand gravel on the track can be a hazard, imagine taking a rock through the windshield at 100+ mph, or worse yet think about a biker. It also seems like a lot of work for the staff to clean up.
3:55 pretty much confirms that MX5s are just great to learn driving with because they don't have a lot of power but that was some smooth driving (unlike most FWD racers showcased here)

I don't think so because gravel is used especially to avoid bad consequences of any mistake. No damage = no fine.
