DJI OSMO Action 4 - A Fix for the TimeCode Bug!

- Eight months ago I produced a video and reported a serious timecode bug to DJI with their OSMO Action 4 cameras. You can see that video here ( • DJI OSMO Action 4 - A ... ). It turns out that DJI acknowledged the bug, but indicated that they could not fix it due to the complexities. What they're really saying is that it's a bug in the design of their timecode software that would be so costly to fix that it is not worth it. At least that's how I translate it as a former Silicon Valley software executive. Since there was no action by DJI and this bug was costing me hours of post production work to fix it each time I produced a video, I decided to write a LUA script that runs in Davinci Resolve that fixes the issue. This video briefly reviews the bug and then shows you how to install and run that script to fix it.

There’s also a bonus script that takes videos without timecode and inserts time code (time of day) based on the date the video file was created. That’s helpful for drones and phone videos that do not have timecode.

I went out to test the timecode while fishing for Blue Gills today. I synced my Action 3, Action 4, and Pocket 3 using the Rode Wireless Pro. The timecode did not line up because I used the pre-record feature on my Action 4. I ended up using PluralEye in Premiere Pro to sync the footage. Trying to sync in resolve was a nightmare. I guess timecode wasn't as helpful as I had hoped. Back to the drawing board with learning timecode to teach my students. LOL!!!
You should report a bug to DJI that timecode with pre-record doesn't work! I don't use pre-record. I use looping and am always recording. Looping keeps overwriting the loop until you stop recording....that's how I ensure I don't miss footage.
@@KayakFishingAddict , I like pre recording because I only start recording when I get action. Less footage to go through. 😅
@@mrheng562loop mode achieves the same thing. At the end you only have clips that you’ve decided have action in them. You do that because you only stop recording once you’ve caught some action.
So does TC actually work properly on these things or do they drift like a MF?
They drift. Maybe like 5-10 seconds over a 6 hour shoot. I use it to get the footage aligned but I have to then use my sync claps to achieve perfect sync.
@@KayakFishingAddict oh joy. Thanks for letting me know, it was what I suspected, hence my question about it. On my GoPro I run a tentacle into it the whole time plus power (and use it for hours at a time) and update the timecode on each file from the audio in post but according to DJI the Action 4 can’t take power and mic at the same time so I’d have to keep swapping batteries every 80 mins. Not appealing

@@KayakFishingAddict oh right, that makes sense. It’s just splitting one USB cable into its components. So DJI is right that it can’t accept two inputs but this is really one input split into two plugs.
You know the dji recording at 30 fps is actually 29.97 drop frame and when you imported your clips you didn't change the time line resolution and your clips didn't show the correct frame rate but instead showed them as non drop frame 30fps. That's probably part of your bug issue.
Thanks, but my clips are shot at 24 fps (23.97) and it's not drop frame (DF) in that mode.
@@KayakFishingAddict Super info! I'm going to change my video settings from 30 FPS to 24 FPS in my GoPro. In fact, it should help my videos look more cinematic
