Hot damn - this totally worked!! I have a 4TB Seagate Backup Plus that recently kicked the bucket after like 5 years. Thinking it was a USB cord issue, I tried a new 3.0 USB cord on the drive, to no avail. My last resort was invasive. As instructed in this great video, I carefully removed my hard drive case (with a very small flathead screwdriver) and then removed the USB to SATA converter. This video made me realize that it was probably my converter that was the culprit the whole time. I ordered a WAVLINK USB3.0 to SATA 3 Hard Drive Cable Adapter for $8.99 on Amazon. Once I removed the old converter, I plugged the new WAVLINK in and boom! My Seagate hard drive was up and running again! I transferred all of my files to a new Seagate 16TB Expansion drive and was good to go. Thanks a mill Tech Services for easily saving me a couple hundred bucks on a data recovery service. All it took was watching this fast and easy tutorial video and $8.99 to save 19 years of precious multimedia and very important business files from my external hard drive. Yeah, when looking for an adapter, you'll mostly find wired ones which aren't suitable for use in a hard drive case. What you want to do is type in "external hard drive 2.5 case usb 3." They even go for less than 10 bucks. You'll get a new case for your hard drive which includes the SATA to USB adapter shown in the video. I got the Inateck one for $9. Works like a charm, took less than a minute to put my hard drive into it

*2019* Just FYI, but it's common for modern hard drives of even the EXACT SAME attached board to be unusable after you swap the board attached to the platters. Due to small read/write areas modern drives align the read/write heads on the first bootup and record those numbers. That means if you swap the board those numbers are gone and the read/write heads will be slightly offset and likely can't read the data even if everything else works perfectly.
Note: my experience between Seagate and Western Digital (despite what's said here) says that WD is less likely to be damaged in the first place. The first Seagate I bought has been damaged and to this day I still don't know why or how since it wasn't dropped to the ground. Conversely, my first WD passport external drive is still working since even before I learned I must be careful with them because they are so easily damaged (4 years now). The Seagate damage happened just two months into a 5tb. I haven't been able to retrieve the data, this vid did not help there because the adapter still new.

326 dislikes from WD fans ignoring the difficulty of rescuing them. Seagates are easier to rescue, that is the point. Most failures are able to be solved with a direct cable to the other port.
