I would hope that both airports will remain active and divide the flights in and out of the central part of Crete. This will make life easier for guests arriving on the island. The new facility is way off of the beaten path and a no nonsense freeway access will be needed and it must be a non stop system to get people out to their destinations on the island. Now if we could get an airport in the City of Rethymno it would be great. The ferry line ANEK stole the local ferry line from this city years ago making it difficult for the agricultural and tourist industry in that prefecture to survive. It was also discovered that two years after the cessation of service to the city they were still receiving government subsidy’s for an unproductive route as well as still advertising services to Rethymno via ferry boat in American and Canadian travel centers.
Crete needs the new airport more and more as Heraklion airport is getting busier every year.
I look forward to the new airport when it is expected to open in early 2027
