West Ham Pumping Station

  • West Ham Pumping station was constructed by the borough under powers obtained in the West Ham Corporation act 1893, and, until it was abandoned in January 1972, pumped sewage from the West Ham area to the Northern Outfall Sewers.
    The buildings are less distinguished than those of Abbey Mills and their interest lies in the original steam-powered pumping plant, now disused. This comprises two compound (two cylinder) engines built by the Lilleshall Company of Shropshire, each with a high pressure cylinder of 2'6" diameter and a low pressure cylinder of 4' diameter. Each has a cast iron beam 30' long weighing 17 tons and a flywheel 22' diameter and drove two bucket pumps 5'6" in diameter, which lifted dry weather flow over 40'. Steam was generated in the adjacent boiler house, in seven of the original nine Lancashire boilers built by Spur Inman of Wakefield. The Octagonal brick chimney was 120' high.
    To cope with additional storm flows, the station had three reciprocating steam engines driving centrifugal pumps. John Cochrane of Barrhead built two of the engines. The third was purchased second-hand and its origin unknown.
    A sewer has now been constructed to divert flow to Abbey Mills Pumping Station, and West Ham Pumping Station has become redundant.
    The engines have unfortunately suffered in the hands of vandals in the past. The damage is mostly spray painting, with minor damage to some oilers etc, so not too bad. The building is now secure and the site is occupied, so they should remain safe for now.
    I apologise for the video being a bit dark. I'm hoping to get back there and record some better footage soon,if there is enough interest.
    Filmed using an Olympus C-770 and wide angle converter WCON-07

    This is a fascinating bit of footage of a Victorian Wonder that surely deserves proper preservation there can be few more impressive surviving examples Victorian engineering in Newham. A I understand it the nearby lovely Abbey Mills Pumping station has long had it inner workings removed.
    I pass by these wonderful places most days whilst walking my little Bichon Frise buddy Snowie,and have shared my knowledge of Abbey Mills with numerous passers by curious about that remarkable building

    I saw the engines running about 1971; given the time they have been idle they don't look too bad. The engine house was not painted outside either. They were never very clean by stationary engine standards. My photos did not come out too well, but I gave a sound recording I made to the National Sound Archive. Its a pity the storm water engines did not survive. interesting this was that an electricity gernerating station was part of the complex.

    Having been involved in the restoration of a similar machine, Pipweeds comments fill me with dismay. These engines (along with steam engines in general) have had the most dramatic effect on society. The steam engine is one of the most important inventions ever made by man. Good luck to any restoration team that takes on the project

    i have been to abbey mills pumping station. i sneaked in through a gap in the fence.
    i climbed down into the mew storm drain pit for a look around.
    interesting about the different boroughs.
    i had a map that showed to pumping stations, abbey mills was one, but i could not find the other one, so might have been the west ham one.

    Serious architecture....
    I've always liked old buildings...When I was young, I used to go into storm sewers and similar facilities like the one in this video...
    There is an old sugar mill here in Longmont CO next to where I currently live. This pumping station should be turned into a museum.

    it is sad to see it like that. i would try to fix it up

    Sorrry but I now remember none of the photos came out at all. The vertical engines were all 2-cylinder compounds, suppose they were scrapped in the 1970s when the boilers went.

    Abbey Mills pumping station now deals with the sewage once dealt with by this pumping station. Abbey mills is literally a few hundred yards from West Ham pumping station, and was built first. Because West Ham was in a different borough, Abbey Mills didn't deal with this area. Infact there was no connection between West Ham and the Northern outfall sewer, and for 20 or so years after the northern outfall was complete, West Hams sewage was discharged into a creek, only meters from the outfall pipe

    Why don't you get a life. I can't believe that you belong to the same species as those who had the vision and skill to built such a place as this. Maybe if the destructive mentality of you and those like you was "taken out" of society, the world would be better for everyone. I assume you also enjoy going around drawing your name on everything you see. "Oooh look everyone, the monkey can spell his name!"

    Thanks for the info. I was lead to believe that they were triples, so that clears that up. At the moment, the basement area in the beam engine house is under about 20 foot of water. I am involved in negotiations to try and arrange pumping it out. Then we may be able to gain access, through the wall, to the vertical engine house. All the doors have ben bricked up at ground level, and as I mentioned, a floor has been laid over the top.

    Hi, thanks for the comments. I would love to see the photo's if possible, Prehaps you could scan them and email them to me. I have some photo's taken in about 1955, but these are quite low quality. I dont know if the triple expansion engines were removed or not, because a floor has been laid over where they were. Do you know if they were removed? I have alot of recent photo's if you are interested. I will post another, better quality video this year, hopefully.

    If you don't like, don't watch.
    I pity the people who can't figure out how to chose something they enjoy on RUclips. Perhaps you are spelling 'Mindless idiots' wrong in the search bar.
    Im sure there is something on here that would apeal to your mentality........ perhaps some childrens programmes?

    Not completely sure, however, the bottom of the pumps are situated some 24 feet below the engine floor, and the northern outfall sewer is probably 10 feet or so higher than the engine floor. I would suspect therefore that around 35feet would be the total height pumped. I hope this helps.

    A listed building is one which is deemed important enough to save from destruction. You obviously can't comprehend the idea of preservation, conservation or restoration. Lets all just destroy everything that isn't ours, and then what?

  • @Madblokey
    @Madblokey  16 лет назад

    Why, what would smashing stuff achieve. This building and the engines are of historical importance. Restoration would be better than destruction. Maybe if someone smashed your stuff, just for a laugh, would you like that?

  • @Madblokey
    @Madblokey  17 лет назад

    I don't own the building, but I am currently involved with the restoration of a similar pumping station. I cannot understand your facination with destruction, surely its better to create than destroy?

  • @Madblokey
    @Madblokey  17 лет назад

    I'm more likely to restore the building and engines. These engines are of great historic importance. It would take more than a destructive idiot, like yourself to realise this.

  • @Madblokey
    @Madblokey  16 лет назад

    It's a listed building. It belongs to Thames Water, and the world.
    Why the facination with smashing things? Do you have some deep seated emotional trauma that you can't express?

  • @Madblokey
    @Madblokey  16 лет назад

    I totally agree. Unfortunately it would take more than just us two to do it.
    If you read Pipweeds comments below, you'll see the sort of mentality that we are up against..!
