Good Evening everyone, I'm Ankush Chirimar and My topic for the presentation is “Indigo: Take off towards success!” Let me begin by asking a very simple question to this knowledgeable and learned youth present over here, how many of you want to do business? I am sure Jethalal and Sundar have inspired us enough, and we all want to be business tycoons someday. But, How many of you dream to or plan to, open an Airline company? None of you?
Welcome to the Indian Aviation Industry, the industry which is known for its extreme volatility and challenges and has witnessed the downfall of giants like Air India, Kingfisher, Deccan etc etc etc. But surprisingly, Indigo was the only airline which was profitable in this industry with more than 10 consecutive years of profitability, 10 years obviously before COVID pandemic made our lives miserable, and not just this, it has more than 55% market share and everyone knows about their punctuality.
While we have been always told “Jitni chaddar ho utne hi pair failaane chahiye” but IndiGo surprised the entire industry, by ordering 100 Aircrafts, with Airbus, in the very first year of its operation and this deal, mere pyaare bhaiyo aur unki beheno, was one of the biggest Aircraft deals in aviation history back then. Isn't it too much to ask for, from a single airline company?
But, how did Indigo do this? Lets deep dive and understand more on this!
Challenges in Indian Aviation Industry:
Let's try to understand the 3 fundamental truths of Indian aviation industry:
When booking flight tickets, what's the first thing you look at? Bhai indigo - vindigo mujhe nahi pata, sabse sasti honi chahiye, right? Provided you are paying from your own pocket, otherwise you would be like, “nahi bhai, main toh high price waali dekhta hu, mera reimbursement toh firm karti h na”. My star articles, I am not talking about you! I am talking about your underpaid friends! The filter of price, is the only thing that matters to most customers.
How many of you have got the luxury of boarding an Airplane atleast once in your life? Most of you! Congratulations and welcome to this elite club! For boarding an airplane is still a dream of many Indians including me!
Now, if you are already thinking, that Indian Aviation Industry is really “tough” to do business in, let me make it “more tough” for you. What if I tell you, the most expensive element in your Profit and Loss, which makes up 45% or even 50% of your operation cost. is completely out of your control, because it keeps fluctuating based on the geopolitical situations and that is the fuel cost
Strategic decision-making at IndiGo:
As Indians, while purchasing big things, we always follow our golden judgaadu rule.
“Sasta, sundar, tikau” right?
That’s exactly what Indigo also looked at, while placing 100 aircrafts order with Airbus! How?
Sasta: As Airbus was desperately waiting to re-enter Indian markets, it offered discount as high as 50% on the deal
Sundar: The Airbus Aircrafts were way more efficient than Boeing Aircrafts, that’s how an Airline company, would define “Sundar” right?
Tikau: It adopted a model called as Sales and Leaseback model.
While most of us already know, what a sales and leaseback model is, but in this lively, happening and wonderful conference, I don’t want you to put stress on your head.
In simple words, Indigo purchased the Aircrafts from Airbus at 50% discount, so $100M per aircraft at just $50M. And it sold the aircrafts to BOC Aviation at $55M, which means at a profit of $5M per aircraft! And then took them on lease.
Look at this strategy guys, while other airlines were finding it difficult to earn profits even in their core airlines business, Indigo earned a profit by just buying and selling aircrafts!
Kingfisher Vs IndiGo - What was done right?
Now you must be wondering that this model would have been adopted by other competitors as well. Yes, The fun fact is that even Kingfisher used the same sales and lease back model with Airbus, but even then, Kingfisher failed miserably and IndiGo succeeded at the exact same time in the exact same market.
The question is why did this happen?
Kingfisher wanted to give a luxurious 2-hour life to their customers with food and entertainment, Whereas, IndiGo decided to eliminate all these premiums, and give customers only what was absolutely needed to travel, that is obviously a seat and a little bit of legroom. It followed 100% economy class policy.
