Madonna looked sickeningly stunning in this event. One of her best, if not the best look ever.
.....and she was not about to get dissed by Courtney
Gucci by Tom Ford
She was absolutely stunning that night. This was right before she started work on Evita.
The Madonna Courtney moment was just SURREAL. Madonnas faces omg...the silence uhahuahua
I remember watching it live. It was so awkward. Even I was timing “ shouldn’t somebody be stopping this”
@@toothemaxx8428 Madonna's shade was epic and smart as always though and Courtney is not exactly dumb either so they had a funny ''conversation''. I like Madonna even more after seeing this.
I heard they were were semi friends .. also Kurt dies in 1994…
I remember laughing real hard when she said “…Good money!” I forgot she said that 😂
TLC shading pebbles and the entire label has me crying they deserve every last one of their flowers
@Alejandro-gk9jw??? What’s the issue 😂
She just Pebbles? Like just Cher? Like just Jack?
@@paulna85 Who is Jack?
I know Seal, Beck, Cher as you mentioned... Who is just "Jack"?
@@tagaway6173 Just Jack is a reference to Will and Grace. The character called Jack has a show that's called "Just Jack"
@24kgoldplatedvermeilyup
I was there!!!! I was 12 yrs old and sang onstage with Michael Jackson and a bunch of other kids. We saw the whole rehearsal that day, all the artists... it was awesome. I peaked at 12.
That's so cute! What an awesome memory.
A great peak - I'd be happy with that...
Liar
Omg how cool!
I was Michael's lead guitar player. I was 20. I peaked in on Mariah.
Dude these 90s VMAs were so raw lol like someone just taking a camera around and filming whatever. I love it, i was in first grade by this point but i wish iw as old enough to really appreciate this era, so much talent.
Raw as hell.
Can't wait to see what this guy has to say about the 92 Awards. "Hi Axl! Hi Axl! Where's Axl? Hi Axl!" 😂
Tabitha was truly shady and rude most of the time. She acts like she hated her job.
Yeah, she always sounded bitter.
I think she sounded like someone who was going places. In life. Not to the spa with Mariah, or rehab with Courtney. I applaud her. Go on on Tabitha...dont take no s h I t
@@JaysonSan-xp1zpyou’re joking 😂
@Jamie_Ashe ...not even a little bit
@@JaysonSan-xp1zp yikes.
Did he say “ infamous Big” lol it’s “Notorious B.I.G.” Also the Apollo is a historic Black theater. The joke was the cop got caught saying the n-word and thus he wouldn’t be welcomed at the Apollo
I came to the comments just to make sure someone pointed both things out, so thank you!
I was thinking the exact same thing! Thank you for pointing it out.
Thank you from the bottom of my old Gen X ❤ for covering the 90s awards shows. This brings back such nostalgia...this time in music could never be replicated.
This!!! When i saw the info in the corner for the music video, i was brought alllll the way back to the past!! Love this!!
I agree. I was 17 when this aired. Classic!!!
I feel like pre-TRL is the cutoff point of pop culture knowledge for the people who watch these videos. This entire show feels like an alternate galaxy
I'm really good with pop culture in general, and yet watching this I only recognized about 60% of the nominees
I felt this to be fair ❤
@@bullmonty764I recognized a lot of them, but I sure was surprised to see they were nominated at the VMAs.
@@bullmonty764 Right? Most of the people who watch these things are mainly fans of pop music and people forget that after the 80's came to a close, there was a big void, at least in America, of the entire genre of pop until around 1997 when Spice Girls and the Backstreet Boys and the like all showed up. Til then, it was a lot of R&B and hip-hop and rock and adult contemporary, but pop? Aside from a handful of acts like Ace of Base, it was a ghost town. Even Madonna was venturing more into R&B and house and balladry than the dance pop that made her an icon in the 80's.
That said, it is really interesting to look back at this era because it was SO different from what we're used to. The host turning the VMA's into a political debate you'd see on C-SPAN? That would NEVER happen today lmfao. Also, I had never seen that Madonna/Courtney Love altercation in full and the fact that Courtney straight up admitted on national television that she let Ted fucking Nugent hit it is just 💀 what a fascinating time capsule this was
@@cityboy2092 I get that, but the 60% I was referring to was almost entirely songs that have become iconic parts of the era - you know, Basket Case, Scream, Waterfalls, Buddy Holly, Kiss from a-you get the idea. Probably should’ve made that more clear in my original post
The added Mariah falsetto screams during the rollercoaster bit got me 2:30 - 2:34 🎢 😂
They were too rough on Courtney, especially being a year removed from losing her husband and battling heroin addiction
And people still are claiming she killed him, it’s like get a life and let her grieve and live peacefully
people tend to forget she was a new widow who never went to counseling
And in hindsight, Kurt Loder leaning over and saying: "HI COURTNEY!" was so shitty, he knew what he was doing.
They are still too rough on Courtney - of all the people deserving of some revisionist history it's her.
@@mrmusickhimself......
My favorite moment from this show was when Michael Jackson received the award from Biggie and he handshaked him like gangstas do, which I think is interesting.
That’s just a normal dap up black people do
Latoya later said her abusive husband made her do that press conference. She was in a very abusive marriage for years. To the point the family had to cut her off because he had her recording their conversations
@Alejandro-gk9jw Yeah, God forbid someone be weird.
You know, no 'normal' person could have earned the success he has. Extra creative people tend to be weirdos - whatever that is
@Alejandro-gk9jwWell how was I supposed to know that weird = pedo. I mean, not that I didn’t suspect
He said he had his nose done multiple times and a chin implant. Botox isn’t a surgery. Besides it’s a very private topic which he was obviously very uncomfortable about. I mean, look at him. Many celebrities won’t admit this stuff. What, have YOU never lied? Does you once lying mean you always do? Seems like quite the assumption.
I’d say being rich actually makes people less inclined to believe in your innocence. Could have been investigated by the FBI for his whole life and been acquitted in court 10 more and you’d still believe what you believe because he was ‘rich and powerful’ and obviously bought himself out
unparalleled objectivity
I don’t doubt you have other so-called ‘proof’. Which no doubt would be convincing if I hadn’t dug through the history of all of these people, the court documents and all the other bull crap. But I mean, we can talk about it if you want - but you just seem to be through your share of ‘stans’
@Alejandro-gk9jw Oh and your reply is something? cool. Glad to have such rational minds among us ❤️
@Alejandro-gk9jw You realize comparing plastic surgery to abuse is a total logical fallacy, right? Michael never denied having surgery. He literally admitted to having his nose and chin done???? Now, I have no idea whether he abused children or not, I don't think anyone will ever really know. The police and FBI found 0 evidence against him after watching him for 10 years. If something concrete or damning comes out, i'll consider him guilty, until then? I'm filing his case under "up in the air"
The Barbara Walters interview with Courtney Love is diabolical. She asked that question, deadpan, with a straight face. Barbara Wawa was messy boots.
Barbara was a pick me
That literally made my jaw drop, I absolutely lost it lmfaooooo everyone did Courtney so wrong
The mid 90s was the beginning of Janet’s alternative phase where she did a lot of acting out and things for shock value to combat the squeaky clean image she was forced to wear growing up in the spotlight and being forced to be known as “ the normal one” . I feel like she resented that a lot and that’s when the red hair the tattoos and the piercings the fashion came into play along with a bout of depression she was going through
Yeah. In 1995, she started going through depression. Her and Michael were always close and they stopped hanging around each other by the 90s due to busy schedules, that hurt Janet a lot. I think that's why she took a hiatus around this time, as well as feeling a lot of pressure around this time to match her previous success with the next CD.
BABE WAKE UP, NEW HUGO DROP
I AM HERE FOR IT! 👍🏼

MJ's 1995 VMA Performance = Unequalled to this day (and likely forever)
1991 VMAs would be a good one to cover. Prince and his infamous yellow outfit😆
The iconic assless chops ruffle some feathers back in the day. He would've broke the internet today
I want to him cover every mtv awards since 1984 im just now realizing celebrities were A MESS in the best way possible back then
Fun Fact: After a little research of my own, TLC is the third and to date final act to win both the VMA for Viewer's Choice and Video of the Year. Also, they're the very first African-American act to take Viewer's Choice. The real It Girls of the 90s.
Facts! I was gonna post this info just in case no one else did. 💜
“In dire need of attention “ I love Madonna
I cannot wait for you to do the Oscars coz those shows were always full of mess!!!
Sorry no one watched the Oscars here in America

Alanis doing You Oughta Know was one of the best performances...I still get goosebumps remembering seeing this on MTV awards 1995
You. Seem. Very well. I thought. You. Should know.
Latoya was paid by her abusive ass husband to lie on mike and i don’t understand how people would consider janets shirt to be condemning her brother who she literally defends til this day
Not everyone has enough IQ to understand and accept the truth. #MJInnocent
At 13:16 Janet said in an interview " If people think Michael is a pervert then I'm a PERVERT 2 "
That Brandy/Monica Verses was low key hilarious. Brandy was all happy and giddy, and Monica was there. At one point Brandy declared that they were about to go on tour together, but Monica IMMEDIATELY shut that down.
1. I can never accept another pronunciation of mess.
2. That Mhissy voice over had me dying of laughter 😀
3. Mariah was and is so iconic. I did not know that was the same announcer she later gave the side eye too!!
HOT MIHSS!
I was 10 when this came out, and I believe this was the first VMAs I watched. After that, I watched them every year and recorded them on VHS to watch again later lol
Apollo Theatre has a huge history with black entertainment. One of the hardest rooms in the world to do stand up in front of
And Mark Fuhrman was recorded saying the N word among other racist things.
TLC were the biggest winners of the VMAs of 1995 for Best Group, Best R&B, Viewer’s choice awards and Video of the Year after they had file for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in July of 1995
13:26 It’s worth noting that Latoya was being @bus*d by her husband, Jack Gordon, at this time. She spoke about this in her book, Starting Over, and in a couple interviews. He had mafia ties and was threatening to k*ll her, Michael, and other members of her family. He also manipulated her into believing her mother was going to kill her and beat her nearly to death in their home. There are photos of her after a beating in 1990 and he lied and told the press that she got jumped. She ended up living in reclusion from 1996 to 2003 because of the trauma. This is also all over the internet and she has routinely defended Michael since 2003
Tabitha is savage lmao I honestly don’t know how she’s never been slapped in the face by her interviewees lol
Tabitha is so hottt
I never liked her.
I never liked her either, even as a 10 year old. I can just feel the bad vibes lol
Tabitha is cool as fuck, true professional journalist in a chaotic environment with rich crazy people and their handlers.
Our standards are getting so low 😂
The 1995 VMA's were iconic! I loved every minute of it! It was such a different time!
I remember watching this live. I was 11 years old and MTV was EVERYTHING to us back then. So many great artists we had. And I'm sorry, the 90s vmas are still less cringe than the 00's vmas. Of course I'm biased though.
Yes, back before Taylor Swift and the Kardashians were a thing. The early 2000s were even good because they still weren’t a thing yet
How were the 90s back then?/genq
OMG!!! I have been waiting so much for this one, the Madonna/Courtney moment is a mess but so funny as well.
"unjust enrichment" is the greatest way of describing stealing I've heard
The fact they were talking about global warming in 1995… almost 30 years ago and nothing changed. 😢
We were talking about it in the late-80s…when I was in high school.
Hell, Marvin Gaye was warning us in What's Going on back in the early 70s
From what Gore said in his documentary, we should all be required to wear oxygen masks while outdoors cause the ozone layer would be gone. It's probably just scare tactics to get us buying climate friendly products.....
They should be talking about government weather manipulation.
Don't worry Time Magazine in the 1970s had covers that said the world will be in an ice age by year 2000.
Tabitha did not like celebrities ESPECIALLY the girlies. I remember this VERY clearly. It gave i couldn’t hack it as a mainstream news journo and got stuck doing this. Nasty energy.
No no no boo-boo . The Dennis miller joke about Mark Fernando in the Apollo is because the Apollo is known as the birthplace to nearly every legendary black artists career with the reputation for a very stern audience full of black nyc residents whom were known to boo you furiously off the stage if you weren’t any good . Anybody from the Jackson’s five to the supremes to destiny’s child got their start performing there first .
My eyebrows shot up too, the crowd at the Apollo would have torn Fuhrman apart -- with Sandman Sims tapdancing on his corpse.
Omg these videos make me wish I could go back and time and experience these moments live. I can only image the GAG of seeing that Madonna & Courtney interview in the moment 😭
Great video, this was one of the few VMAs I saw back in the day so its interesting hearing everything that was happening behind the scenes. Hopefully you'll cover the 1992 VMAs at some point as that was the one where Kurt Cobain and Axl Rose were having some major beef backstage that ended up spilling over into their performances.
I feel like mid 90s madonna wasn't appreciated at the time and isn't appreciated enough now. Like the sex book thing was whatever, but once she got bored being naked her music really went up ten notches.
The fact that Natalie Merchant was ever famous still kinda blows my mind. Not that the music was bad, she just had all the charisma of government cheese. Nothing wrong with it, but if it weren't put in front of you for free in its plain white box, you'd never thought it was food.
Lol Natalie is very much an act who could've ONLY gotten big in the time period when she did. The mid-90's was a banner time for slightly earnest/slightly ironic white female singer-songwriter types like her, Sheryl Crow, Jewel, Fiona Apple, and of course Alanis. Was not my kind of music at all but there was a place for it. That entire scene pretty much laid the runway for Taylor Swift to become a mega superstar years later
@@cityboy2092and Joan Osborne!! 🤣😂🤣😂
Not government cheese😂😂😂
I like mid-90s Madonna too - but it's very derivative
@@cityboy2092Funnily enough all those other artists have been forgotten whereas Fiona Apple still remains beloved and has continued to release critically acclaimed albums with each decade. Especially Fetch The Bolt Cutters which topped many end of year lists.
Interesting to see Madonna as the mature adult
Not hard when the other person is deeply traumatised & grieving
@@maryjanedodoWhat?.
@@maryjanedodoEven though I'm no fan of Courtney it's understandable that she was behaving like that given the fact she was going through grief & not dealing with it in a healthy manner.
Tabitha is a legend!! I was just born a few years before this happened so i obviously did not get to experience her in the 90s but she seems to have way more personality than VJs in the 2000s and later.
I am so here for these vids. What a great idea! I was in high school during the 90s and they were great but yes, all of it was a hot messy mess.
The award shows ARE messy and so funny but these videos are made soooo much funnier by your commentary and edits 😂
You are Gen Z’s “We Love the 90’s , 80s , ect” show . Showing iconic moments in pop culture via award shows .

Suprise to see Jeff Buckley nominated for best new artist. Don’t get me wrong he was great and had one of the best debut album's of all time. But he didn't sell alot of records or was widely known when he was alive. Definitely should have won he has had a lasting effect on music. Radiohead, Muse , Coldplay and others were influenced by him.
Completely agree Jeff should have won.
@Missjunebugfreak Shocked, he was never huge during his lifetime. He had a great voice and was a pretty good songwriter and guitarist, plus he was good-looking. You can see why girls would have a crush on him over someone like Ed Sherren who doesn't have his talent and looks like a hobbit.

The Apollo is the most famous Black American Theatre in Harlem, NYC and Furhman was caught on tape saying the N word. Miller's joke is making a reference to that, I don't think it was the Nazi's anti-semitism but rather their racism - in my opinion. I LOVE YOUR CONTENT SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!
thank you! Came to the comments to say this. While the N*zi medal is obviously disgusting, Fuhrman was most famous for his racism and admitted violence/ill will toward black people.
Audio tapes were presented as evidence in the OJ trial of him not only saying hateful, violent, N word riddled comments about black people, but in a huge moment for the trial, it came out that he had bragged about planting evidence to incarcerate innocent black men.
It was huge and obviously the rowdy and historically black crowd at the Apollo would prob be his nightmare. He deserved any and all shame he got.
Definitely a turning point in that most 90's case ever!!! Thanks for a more detailed description.@@supersabs930
