  • Using the mod posted by Matt, I've made what I feel are a few improvements that allow for the cable to be routed out of the main board at the rear of the unit for a more appealing look.

    There are 2 different types of Sounddock 1 called A & B.
    Sounddock 1A (as in video) has a firewire charging voltage of 12V for early ipods and
    1B has a 5V charging voltage for later ipods. Both models look the same
    and you can only tell the difference from the serial numbers. Iaw the
    Apple pin notation pin 18 (Bose pin numbers are different) is a pin
    providing an ipod output of 3.3V to switch the Bose on (same both early
    and late versions). I'm not sure where or how the 2Kohm resistor was
    determined in the above video. From my own experience for Version 1A to
    drop the 12V wirewire voltage to 3.3V the resistor needed was 390Kohm. A
    2Kohm resistor sends nearly 10V down thw 3.3V rail!. Form version 1B to
    drop the 5V charging voltage down to 3.3V the size of resistor is
    6.75Kohm. There also would appear to be a common problem with 1A where
    the firewire voltage is actually 17V, this is clearly far higher than it
    should be and may contribute to the 1A failure rate.

      How can I find out if mine is an A or B from the serial number?

    • @GotoAmar
      @GotoAmar 2 года назад +5

      @@Soupdragonism if it begins with 03 or 04 then 1A otherwise it's 1B. People also say that 1B makes a tone noise when you plug it in for the first time.

    I spent all afternoon trying to figure out how to do this... failed miserably and was incredibly confused. Came here and saw your video. 5 mins later, music to my ears! You are a legend for sharing. Made my day.

    Thank you for posting this video. Although Matt's video was the inspiration for me to undertake this modification in the first place, your video showed me how to do it neatly and clean. I did the mod according to Matt's video first, but ran into trouble when putting the casing back together as my audio cable was just a tad bit too thick for the dock tray to be seated correctly. When doing it your way that was no longer an issue.

    This was a great addition to Matt's mod. Instead of a pigtail I used a panel mount jack on the front.

    Thank you very much. Your instructions are very easy to follow. When my iPod's battery drains out my SoundDock makes noise while charging, and only right channel plays music, after the resistor it works perfect! no more noise and it sounds stereo always. Thanks again.

    This was a very helpful video and worked perfectly. I would only caution people to make sure the resistor folds as flat and far away from the base of the IPhone/Ipod as possible so that it can rest in the cradle easily.

    bought an old sounddock for $20 because the sound is still amazing and nothing for that price and get me that quality, then bought a bluetooth adapter and for some reason didnt work so i went this way, literarlly broke open an old charger for a resistor and it worked lol thanks

    • @GnarledSage
      @GnarledSage 7 лет назад

      Hi. I have the same problem, bought the Bluetooth adapter and didn't work. Are you saying that if I just put the resistor the adapter will work??
      And I also broke open an old dvd looking for resistors (I have little knowledge of electronics) and found a bunch in there, some look really similar to the one in the video (will they work? Are the color indicator that they are the same?) and others are either to big or to small and in diferent colors. Can I use any resistor. What should I look to find one that suits.
      I'm in Colombia and hasn't been easy to buy one.
      Thanks in advance if you answer.

    • @nhsplayer07
      @nhsplayer07 7 лет назад

      i believe its suppose to be a 2k ohm resistor. yes if the colors are the same you should be good. i was in the same situation as you i didn't wanna spent extra buying resistor just so i can use one so i opened up an old ac charger for it.

    • @toddsonbrownlow
      @toddsonbrownlow 6 лет назад

      The reason it didn't work is because thw original sounddock sends out 12v the bluetooth adapters need 5v. This is the same reason it won't charge iphone 4 and up. There is a female to male converter you can buy to fix this. It just plugs into the dock and the bluetooth adapter plugs onto it. But, if this method shown here works for you then its just as good.

    • @HalifaxRyan
      @HalifaxRyan 6 лет назад

      Hey Todd what female to male converter would this be? Was going to buy the BT adapter but as you say I am reading it wont work with a Gen 1 SoundDock. Can you put a link or something to which cable I need to use the BT adapter with it for a Gen 1 SoundDock? Thanks!

    • @toddsonbrownlow
      @toddsonbrownlow 6 лет назад

      Ryan in Halifax search for this on Amazon: "BMR 30 Pin Power Adapter for Bose Sounddock Original". They sell a bluetooth adapter that they guarantee will work with it. They do not guarantee it to work with Chinese made bluetooth adapters.

    In this video ground wire goes to the metal shield, left channel wire (white wire in the video) goes to the right soldering point, right channel wire (black wire in the video) goes to the left soldering point.

    Hey LBpDC , my sound dock has an AUX in the back next to the power plug. So my thinking is to add the resister just like in the video but instead of soldering a 3.5 plug I would like to bridge the 3 spots you found on the mainboard to the 3 points behind the AUX connector (Gnd, R, L). What do you think?

    Hi.
    It seems that there are two versions of the sounddock series 1, with two different connectors : A or B. Mine has a type B, pcb number 314877-001 and the method shown here (wire between pins 19 and 20) doesn't work to emulate the presence of an ipod in the dock.
    In the service manual the two different pinouts are shown (you can find it by looking up "bose sounddock service manual"), has anyone manage to make it work with those ?

      The resistor is needed to tell the Bose Sounddock that an iPod is connected. Otherwise you can plug in an iPod/iPhone, and the Sounddock will unmute, and play audio from both the iPod and the Aux in.

    • @LBpDC
      @LBpDC  9 лет назад

      Yes it definitely works, though I am outputting from the 3.5 mm jack on my pc and using it for a kickass pc speaker. (Damn these things get loud!) I cut out a piece of plastic and blocked off the actual apple dock connector. It's a flat surface now. That said, were a person so inclined, they could certainly use a meter to isolate the voltage from the dock and internally wire a usb hub. Then cut new openinge in the speaker housing for the usb ports and hide the apple dock connector...
      Well... Now I have an idea for what else I'd like to do to mine.

Red in this case is the black one please help me thanks again......

    • @LBpDC

      Red and white designate Left and Right, if you get them backwards it will have no noticeable effect on these.
      You must however get the ground (the shield wire that has no jacket) connected to a ground inside the unit such as on the metal shield where I soldered it in the video.
