They would write it in the margins of their works to warn the reader of particularly complex or difficult concepts. The same group also came up with the ∅ symbol, which any T∅P fan knows about. Guess what the name of this collective was called? "Nicolas Bourbaki." Mind blown. Guess I need to start reading some math journals now.
