  • I'm bringing you along on my biggest babbitt pour since I left the shipyards back in 1994. The two bearings are from a work boat and supply support for a five-inch propeller shaft, which was re-machined to new custom diameters.
The Babbitt material is ASTM B-23 Grade 1 Babbitt
    Melting point solidus 223C 433F
    Melting point Liquidus 371C 700F
    Pouring temp 441C 825F
Part Five, I set up the Clausing lathe for line boring process, mounting to the deck of the carriage on the Clausing lathe is similar to setting up an HBM to line bore a pump case. I had lost the audio on three clips as I set up the bar and take the first couple cuts, but found the audio in the background in other location, so I recorded it to dub in, not a total lost…
    Life is good! Cheers, Keith

What always amazes me about skilled machinists like you, Brian Block, Isaac at IC Weld, and Kurtis at Cutting Edge Engineering is your ability to make measurements off busted up and wore-out holes. Then you weld or machine for a bushing, align bore - and you end up with a functional piece of equipment!

One of my favorite parts is the set ups. Seeing how you fixture and secure a part to be machined is the meat and potatoes, the actual cuts is the gravy.

Ah Ha! This is the technique that answers a bunch of solutions to quests on projects both not started and/or left unfinished. Both the Alpha and the Omega. Well done. Thank you.

Terrific setup Keith. I have some castings to line bore. I've been putting the job off for months as I don't want to mess up. I've been moving from one setup idea to another but you've swayed me over a little bit. Thanks for your help. I'm looking forward to the next instalment.

Keith, good to see back in to your element brother. I enjoyed watching someone else work for a change. Lol , I'm waiting for the finishing up the job video. I hope the younger generation is watching because it's a dying trade . CNC machines are the wave now, but it's hard to do repair work on a cnc!

Hi Kieth, Just a suggestion, you can use a 4 or 5" bearing race or make a sleeve about that diameter that the ball-seat sits in and shim it to the correct height on top of the carriage, then put a strongback across two points with threaded rod and clamp it down. Also, you can make two tapered aluminum cones that slide on your boring bar to center the end bores. Faster setup!

Those are good ideas to add to the list to many other ways. Time what you have on hand and feel the most comfortable with to get the results.

I have noticed that many of the babbitt bearing with split halves have shims in the split line so that the bearing can be resized for wear without re-pouring the babbitt when the bearing wears over time. You didn't insert shims at the split in this bearing...is there a reason?

How often does a part like this have to be bored or have its babbit refreshed?

Good question, the real answer is in how it is maintenance during it use.
