TOMMY PRINE - Ships In The Harbor (Official Lyric Video)

  • My debut release "Ships In The Harbor" is here!
I wrote this song around my birthday last year and I always get super existential around my birthday and I had a thought that we as humans can only feel as deeply as we do and love people and fear things and all the other intense emotions is because everything we experience is finite, including our own lives. So I wrote a song about these little powerful moments and reflections in the human experience to try and capture the beauty in mortality.
    Stream the song: ffm.to/tommypr...
    Lyrics
It must be the morning again
The sun through the window felt good on my skin
But it must be leaving soon as it should
    I saw the bluebird again
She pointed it out in the yard on our fence
So it must be leaving soon, as it should
    When I’m standing by water
    It gets harder and harder
It’s why I get sad when there’s ships in the harbor
Cause they must, be leaving soon- as they should
I got to see an old friend
We laughed and stayed up till it came to an end
Cause he must, be leaving soon
    As he should
I tend to get lost in the stars
I waste every night wondering where we all are, and how we must be leaving soon as we should
    When I’m standing by water
    It gets harder and harder
It’s why I get sad when there’s ships in the harbor
Cause they must, be leaving soon- as they should
It takes time to know when you’re wrong
It takes even longer to put it all in a song,
And I wish it was easy to, like he did
    When I’m by peaceful waters
    It gets harder and harder
I’d do anything just to talk to my father- but I guess he was leaving soon, as we do
Yeah I guess, he was passing through; and I am too

"I'd do anything just to talk to my father" - Wow. That stopped me in my tracks. Here come those tears again. JP fan for 46 years. I miss that man so much, without having ever met him. But it doesn't even register compared to how his family misses him. Your dad is proud of you, Tommy Prine. And you have a new fan.

When my mother died after my father was gone, a friend passed a thought to me. When someone we love passes, we feel the loss you've so beautifully captured. It's as if they're leaving on a ship, in imagery shared with your wonderful writing and singing. To those of us left behind, the boat appears smaller and smaller in the distance until it's lost to sight. We may be helped by remembering that to those on the far shore, the ship grows larger and larger as it approaches that distant shore and those waiting with welcoming arms. Your song brought all these thoughts to mind. Thank you for your eloquence and the beauty of your music and images.

I came in late to radiation therapy late at the MD Andersen clinic years ago and met your parents. Later, your dad invited me back and I got to hang out, laugh and joke with them for a few days. They are two of the kindest, warmest people I’ve ever met. Like the proverbial two peas in a pod. When I heard this song yesterday I was overwhelmed. Another pea from the pod has arrived. 🙂

Stunningly beautiful song, Tommy. I started listening to your Dad’s music in the mid-1970s and Muhlenberg County (which I’ve heard John wrote as a tribute to his dad) blew me away. Your tribute is just as haunting. The few times I was blessed to talk to your dad (you and my son were on the same soccer team) it was clear that he was so very proud of you. God bless you, Tommy.

Tommy - I love your Dad's songs because of the way that he could point out the importance of the smallest things, expressing his thoughts so simply yet so poetically, describing for us all his perceptions of the human condition. The words of this song makes me think he passed that gift along to you, while the haunting, atmospheric tone set by the music sounds kind of ancient and Celtic and I thinking that your Mom 's influence had something to do with that. Maybe not but I can tell you that I am still crying the bittesweet tears that welled up as I listened to your beautiful song. Thank you.

I know your dad leaving hit so much harder than it did me but when your father passed I was at work and started bawling when I heard the news. And this beautiful piece of music made me do it all over again. I'm sorry for your loss Tommy. We all are here. And this is a beautiful way to help us all remember him. 😓 I'm glad you were able to put your feelings into this song. John is so damn proud of you.

An amazingly heartfelt tribute to an incredible songwriter delivered in a flawless manner remniscent of the subject. Tommy, thank for turning your personal sorrow into such a beautiful reminder of all his fans loved about your father, his writings and his irreplacable style. May you continue writing the stories of the trevails of the common man and delivering them in a manner that deepens the roots of the Prine family tree in American musical history forever.

    Hello Tommy,
I am listening to your music for the first time today after reading about you when I was going to look up something on Google.
So, I am hearing this song Tommy and I am just blown-away by your talent and this amazing, amazing song. I only saw your dad one time in concert at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles. My ex-boyfriend was a big fan, got the tickets and I became a big fan too. So now I am listening to your song and you have a great voice!! I want to send you a quote by the late actor, Jimmy Stewart that I recently read in a magazine. He actually was talking about the late actress Doris Day in his quote. He said in part, "A singer's talent for phrasing, the ability to put heart in a piece of music, is not too removed from acting, in which the aim is to give life and believability to what's on paper."
You Tommy, have done this with your music!

Damn you Tommy Prine! I was listening to this, going along thinking "this is an amazingly beautiful song" and then I heard "I'd do anything just to talk to my father" and my breath left me, my chest sank and my heart broke. If and when I recover I may listen to this again, but for now I guess I'll just sit here and think about what you've done. Written a damn fine song is all.

Tommy - this is so beautiful. I have dreams about my dad all the time who passed about 10 years ago; I always hear his voice, usually speaking to someone else, but I can't ever see him. I will be on one side of a column, he on the other, or I'm inside the door and I hear him in the hallway. I don't know what it means but this song instantly felt much like that. Much love to your family.

What a beautiful song and such a haunting voice Tommy. I've loved your father' and his music for years and years and can I say I don't hear your father's voice or songwriting in this song, what I hear is the voice and the songwriting of Tommy Prine in this song, and it's the voice and writing of an up and coming superstar. That's how it should be, so don't beat yourself up trying to be the next John Prine, your father would want you to be the first Tommy Prine and he would be so proud that you are your own man and that you wrote and are singing such a beautiful and heartfelt song. He would tell you that the songs and lyrics will come when you least expect them as happened for him. That is the best way to honor your dear Dad's legacy.

This song is incredibly powerful and my heart needed it. In July I saw my best friend who is like my sister. Since then I have missed her and the lyrics "I got to see an old friend, We laughed and stayed up till it came to an end" reminded me to appreciate the nights that we stayed up talking until 2am because those times don't last forever, they come to an end. And then the lines "I’d do anything just to talk to my father- but I guess he was leaving soon, as we do, Yeah I guess, he was passing through; and I am too". Next month will be 3 years since my Dad passed. A week or so ago I had a "grief burst", according to my therapist. Since then it feels like I've been in this waiting area - feelings aren't very clear, which is unusual for a highly sensitive person like me. I have been able to feel creative again, which is a good result of that burst I guess. This song is great for all hearts and put my relationships into perspective.

Well the apple didn't fall far from the tree... I became a fan of your father's after I began playing myself in my 40's... I will probably have to add this to my repertoire... I play several of your father's... I wish I had that gift for words...😉👍🖖😎

Wow! As others have said, I have moved to tears by you. That's a rare gift you have! I was blessed to see your Dad live 8 times. I'm getting older, but hope to see you that many too as we're passing through.
