- An art history deep dive on Johannes Vermeer's “Milkmaid” currently at the Rijksmuseum, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Vermeer was a painter for the common man. He ranks among the most admired of all Dutch artists and has given us 36 paintings, depicting the domestic lives of those around him. He was a meticulous and introspective artist, and he has given us masterpieces such as “Girl with a Pearl Earring” and “Milkmaid.”

This was a wonderful presentation, but you sounded too confident in stating that Vermeer created 45 paintings. I have heard estimates between 40 and 60. Can you reference your source in feeling certain that he did 45? Thank you.
I assume that none of Vermeer's paintings were named by the painter himself.
Unfortunately, "The Milk Maid" is mis-named.
Yes, she IS pouring milk.
But that doesn't make her a milk maid.
In the Netherlands at this time, a milk maid did not work in the home.
She tended to the cows and the milking.
What we see here is a Kitchen Maid !

Vermeer actually had 15 children, but only 11 survived into adulthood.
