  • Ravel’s song cycle Shéhérazade is reimagined for piano (Malcolm Martineau) and ney flute (Burcu Karadağ) on soprano Fatma Said's debut album, El Nour. Discover: w.lnk.to/elnLY
"The ney’s timbre and minute expressive nuances are so similar to those of the human voice," explains Fatma, "that the combination of flute and singer really does sound like an intimate conversation between two people in private."
El Nour (النور , or "The Light") explores music of Western and Eastern origins through an enchanting program of French, Spanish, and Arabic songs. Joining Fatma in these recordings are pianist Malcolm Martineau, guitarist Rafael Aguirre, the vision string quartet, and a jazz ensemble including traditional Middle Eastern instruments: Tim Allhoff (piano), Itamar Doari (percussion), Henning Sieverts (double bass), Tamer Pinarbasi (kanun), and Burcu Karadağ (ney flute).

Fabulous, it takes me back to a busy Saturday morning in the middle of Stavanger when I ducked in to the Cathedral to get away from the city traffic to unwind. To my surprise there were a couple of flautists practicing Bach (I think it was corals) for the Sunday service. The flutes echoing through the empty vaults was haunting and so’s so beautiful. I stayed there until they left.

    ---
The shade is sweet and my master sleeps,
    Wearing a conical silk bonnet,
With his long yellow nose in his white beard.
    But I, I waken again
    And hear outside
The song of a flute pour forth
    By turns sadness and joy.
A song by turns languorous and frivolous
    Which my dear lover plays,
And when I approach by the window.
It seems to me that each note steals away
From the flute toward my cheek
    Like a mysterious kiss.

Fatma Said’s singing is new to me and this video I came across by chance. As the title says her voice is expressive of enchantment that conveys a scale and depth of felt emotion that is further enhanced by the sincerity of expression that is truly beautiful. Thank you.

Add to that the fact that the pianist, Malcolm Martineau, is Scottish and what you get is a very incorrect comment.
