If you're having trouble with getting enough pressure on your bars I have some advice that helped me a lot. First you want to make the bars with the side of your index finger, not the flat of it. Next you'll want to bring your thumb down on the back of the neck, so that it almost seems like your pinching the neck with the side of your index finger and your thumb. You'll be able to create more pressure on the bar and be able to move your ring finger a bit further. It'll hurt the side of your finger the same way the tips of your fingers felt when you first started playing. You'll have to callous that area, and practice stretching your ring finger in the proper position before you can reliably ring out the bar, but it should be easier now! Good luck and happy playing!
I have short fingers, and did not start playing 6 string guitar until about 6 years ago (I'm 64 now). I have trouble barring chords...but clear, slow, string-by-string, step-by-step instructional videos like this one have helped me a lot. I greatly appreciate your effort in providing them. Thank You!
You really just got to feel the song. Don't concentrate too hard relax and feel the song. It's pretty easy. For the people who can't do the bat chord, try using a tiny bit of the side of your finger, keep the thumb right under the finger you're barring with and press hard sorta like pinching.
I tried to learn this two months ago and gave up. I've finally decided to give it another go and I have now learnt it. You are the best teacher on yt and I use your video's every time I learn a new song. Thank you.
I tried looking at this video when I first started playing guitar. I look upon it now, nearly a year later, and realize it's actually really simple. Keep playing, never give up ;)

Learning to play this while being spoon fed to us by this great teacher is a very challenging...now imagine coming up with the tune from scratch! Mind blown!!! Thank you though. You are an amazing guitar teacher.
I started back in October and this was the first song I learned. I was the beginner who was stubborn to learn stairway right away. At least it worked out for me. Now I can play the solo on both acoustic and electric. Just comes to show that no matter where you start. You could play it with just a bit of practice.
This requires a sturdy left hand. If you're having trouble you may just need a little more strength in that left hand. Daily practice exercises that develop the left hand will help. There's plenty of these exercises on the web but, like any other muscle building, it takes persistence, it won't happen over night but you will notice improvement in less time than you may think if you stick with it. This basic song is so beautiful it's worth the effort. Come on, you didn't learn House of the Rising Sun in one session. The more of these songs you learn, the quicker you will be able to learn new ones but you have to have the strength to play them. Great lesson, any time I don't feel like I've wasted an hour watching some worthless video I WIN! This is a fine lesson and I learned what I expected, THANK YOU!

Robert Darnell I've been playing for 4 years. This is aided witchcraft! I tried to play the entire song with my band and I just barely made it. The bass is so much easier if you're playing this song.
Thanks for this video! For all the comments from folks who are having trouble with this - it's VERY important to learn the basic finger picking techniques he's showing you here! Get in the habit of using the correct fingers to pick their proper strings! It's HARD to unlearn bad habits (ask me how I know...)
jacamaca123 Try playing 002210 then 002200 then 0022100 and at the same time using a bass line that mimics the melody beginning with the bottom 'A' -5 string 0 fret. Then you continue as he does D, Fmaj7 etc. -No bar chords and no reason not to play this great song! Hope this helps.
I used to play this all the time until about 30 years ago. Now I need to learn it all over again for a performance. Surprised at how much l forgot. Even more surprised at how much l got away with playing wrong.

I remember trying to learn this intro 7 months ago back when I first started and could only really play my 8 basic open chords and power chords and wasn't quite able to barre yet. I didn't know jack about fingerpicking either. Feels really good to be able to do this now and it's a bit of a testament to how much I've improved over these past months. Granted, I probably could've done it a few months earlier, but hey, I forgot.

This wouldn't be difficult if my fingers weren't so short.. I've got all the notes down after in my head but actually playing some of them is hard because of that. Ugh.
Tip for people struggling with the barring: Go into the chord with the other fingers first, then do the barring. Also, keep your index finger (the barring finger) as far along the fret as possible towards the body of the guitar. Idk why but these things kinda helped me a bit more and now I can play a bit of this instead of none of it.
