      And, of course, the rebel alliance is totally completely 100% good, as no rebel leaders have ever had ulterior motives, and the book ends after the super bad and evil government is taken down with no mention of what will happen in the future.

      @@shreeshfuup7058 Sorry, as a reformed Grammar Nazi I hate to be That Guy, but 'anterior' means 'toward the front', so presumably anterior motives would be pretty easy to see. I think the word you wanted was 'ulterior', or 'on the far side of', which gained the meaning of 'being hidden from view' by connotation. Although admittedly I've only ever heard that word in the phrase 'ulterior motives'; never heard of anything else being ulterior. I guess it's one of those words that survives only in a certain form, like 'ruthless' - you never hear of someone being 'ruthful', do you?

    Do you think for once making a Young Adult Dystopian Novel that draws more cues from 'Crime and Punishment' and 'George Orwell's 1984' would be a breath of fresh air? No Big Rebellion. Or if there is it's Crushed partway through the Book. Just a guy living under a crapsack dystopia but still going on because of 'X' that gives him the slightest bit of hope as the Human Spirit is allegedly crushed underneath the Jackboot but is never fully extinguished and perseveres?

      All the T.V. Channels play the same thing signalling one Big Major coup and event. Everyboy knows whats going on and nobody can say a word about it.
      When the coup is over. There's new supreme leader and he actually denounces the previous regime in public in front of the party and talks about several major issues address throughout the book and promises change to the "Imperium" State etc...
      The protagonist either cries one tear of joy. Or just jadedly watches with the same dull expression. His soul already dead inside. He's heard this before...

      I wrote a story like that once, but it never really pans out because it's not that satisfying to read to most people. Stories where the good guy loses are fun, but they don't usually get that popular.

    • @JustinTK416
      @JustinTK416 3 года назад +21

      Because that’s absolutely depressing.
      Now, on the other hand, if you maybe don’t go all out Orwellian with your controlling government, you can have a story take place within such a setting and have the end of it be something of ambiguous note for the future of the society.
      Maybe the main character evades capture after being accused of organizing riots and goes on to survive as a drifter, and along the way we find out that the government has reached the point of being largely apathetic since the system has reached a point of effectively running itself provided no major incidents happen.
      So basically the ending note would be that life goes on. There’s still hard injustice, but it is a livable society overall, and there are means of escaping the authorities, as the main character demonstrates.
      And in truth, it’s probably just a matter of time until the atrophy of the actual government reaches a point of criticality and a coupe occurs because it just would become too easy not to happen.
      In the end, the iron fist will fail, not because of the burning passion of random person who’s really just trying to survive, but because the body that forged it is losing the mind to properly wield it, and the muscle memory can only carry on for so long before the whole set up punches itself in the face.
      No one knows when it might happen, or which arguably lucky individual will spear head it, or even if it will occur within the lifetime of anyone around on that day, but it is inevitable.
