This makes a lot of sense if it was early on and electric motors were expensive and special. You have your one motor and it can do a bunch of things by itself, justifying the expense of one of those newfangled electric motors
sure..
but...
it meant..you had one motor.. and variety of attachments..
pully and vacuum is "normal" a but the pully is a weird choice..
Can I pull my mother in law with that motor ?
I mean to be fair electric motors are still expensive and special, and having one attached to multiple functions would still save a hell of a lot of money
@@blakes8901 i has been tried many times..limited success as far i know
@@blakes8901it's called "kitchen aid"...
At least the eqpivalent over here (starmix, krups, "küchenmaschine")had and has lots of attachments.
Beyond that, you can get lots of attachments for cordless drills (some of them even safe to use).
But power tool makers mostly moved on, from selling you a drill+ attachments to selling you 15 specialized ones.
Every blacksmith heart just dropped . That sir is a BLOWER . You just sucked a bunch of crap directly into the motor with no filter . It’s meant to make the fire in a furnace extremely hot , and the grinding wheel is to grind the finished product your working on. The pulley also can run a lathe which is what is designed for .
Directly into the motor? Not how it works but yes he is using it wrong for sure.
No, it was sold as a vacuum. Bissel is and always has been a sweeper/vacuum company. They never made a blacksmith blower. The impeller is metal and can withstand a lot of abuse. This was designed as a home vacuum anyway and would be used in a shop cleaning up hard materials.
@@RJSierra
Different bissell. It's f bissell in toledo ohio which sold electrical supplies and equipment.
@@RJSierraIt's hilarious how people "correct" others with their lack of knowledge. Just stay quiet and let the more knowledgeable people talk.
@@WanderingMiqoliterally one simple Google search will tell you that is a suction device, not a blower. you can literally find the paper that was used to advertise it. he quite literally was the more knowledgeable person speaking, even after you and kyle opened your idiotic mouths.
I'm a metalworker. This is awesome! But I'm pretty sure you aren't supposed to use that as a vacuum, I think the whole setup was geared toward a small foundry shop. Ie forge blower, not vacuum. That's why it's a grinder/centrifugal blower/all purpose belt+pulley motor. They would have used the belt pulley setup for saws, small lathe, pillar drill press, shaper, mill or any other powered machine tool used at the time. This kindof stuff was common back then, and this small piece of equipment would have sufficed in lieu of what was called a "line shaft shop" for just one or two workers. Just my take on it.
If you Google 'F Bissell Ohio' and click on the first image which will be from this channel you'll then see on the second or third row down an eBay listing showing an advertisement for this device and it's referred to as an 'electrical suction cleaner'.
Literally sold as a vacuum as the main use. Search the name and place of origin for an advert.
as a metalworker, have you noticed motor bearing(s) need(s) to be changed?
Well you are 100% wrong and if you look up bissell products from 1913 they have ads and brochures for this VACUUM!
@skylined5534 just because the manufacturer suggests you could use it as a vacuum doesn't mean ot was purpose built. You put too much faith in the designers and marketers.
No, if it were really meant to be used as a vacuum, the debris wouldn't be sucked past the motor so it wouldn't become damaged.
And the motor would certainly be ABOVE the bag or at least below with a filter to prevent most things from falling out of the bag and right back into the motor- oh which remember, is happening consistently while it's running after you've decided to incorrectly use it just because the manufacturer said so.

I love older technology. They made products to last for a lifetime. It was left to the owner to care for their conditions. I have a lot of my grandfather’s tools which were passed down. I’ll use them once in a while but I’m too afraid to break them. Yet again they’ve taken a beating for 3 generations now.
We had a KIRBY vacuum cleaner in 1966 to lasted into 1980’s with multiple attachments as well- drills, sharpens knives, polishes, buffs, etc, and vacuums! Made in America. Those were the days …
The time when America was the lighthouse.
Its not a vaccum, its a blower for a forge...btw, nice sharpening job on that serrated knife 😂
And yet if you Google F. Bissell Ohio you'll find an advert for this exact machine and it's referred to as an 'electrical suction cleaner'.
Doesn't look much like a typical forge blower to me 😉
@skylined5534 you can find any answer you want on Google. Google why coffee prevents cancer...then Google why coffee causes cancer..bet you'll get answers on both ends.
@@skylined5534 I get you are proud of yourself but wow. Damn near went to every comment mentioning the fact it's not a vacuum to show off your inability to think through a problem by yourself.
EVEN IF it were said to be a vacuum by the manufacturer, the MOST it could be used on without destroying the motor is fine powders.
Which would make sense for coal ash, which would actually make a little more sense as a secondary use for a forge blower.
Awww you are so wrong lol
Not only a vacuum but a blower hooked up the other way blow things off or hook the pipe up to your old school coal forge for blacksmithing
Yeah I think you’re right about that, back in them days everyone still used a coal forge and anvil, my forge has two gas burners and uses a $30 gas bottle a day
@@CruisinCaprice i still use a coal forge made from a semis break drum its perfect for knife making anything bigger i use my bigger gas forge
This would have been very handy in a house in 1913 actually. Still is today if you don’t want to throw everything away and keep buying new stuff every two years.
We had a 1960 kirby upright vacuum cleaner that had all those options. In the late 70s early 80s, kirby still had the same model and was about 700 dollars. The thing was a durable beast, heavy, cleaned well, but cost 3 weeks pay
Bullshit. This is not a vacuum in the first place. Vacuums don't have grindstones.
You should contact Cathy BISSELL the current family member who is ceo and show her this machine
It’s Mark now. He’s a cool guy to talk to. He would love this. Seeing what his grandpa made back in the days
@@DocIlpalazzoMark is actually my uncle. I’m definitely showing this to him and thank you for commenting !
I did some research and the is no connection I can find between the Bissell Toledo Electric motor company and the Grand Rapids based Bissell Vacuum company. Sorry guys
As Evan mentioned, the wrong Bissell, there were two Bissell companies that made vacuums and I had to change its name.
I haven't seen that one from Bissell before, but I've heard of this kind of thing. I thought it was Kirby who used to make household machines that could work as a vacuum and other useful functions.
My parents bought a Kirby in the late 60's. It came in something like 20 large boxes that filled up an entire closet. It would do anything from cleaning to sharpening to polishing, heck I think it even made keys, but the only thing I ever saw it do was vacuum the carpet. It was way to much of a pain to unpack, set up, take down, re-pack and put it all back in the closet according to my mom. 🤣
@@dennythomas8887 did it make Makes Julienne Fries?
@@dennythomas8887 Yeah! I've got one of them grinder attachments for a Kirby vacuum. It's old. And just weird lol
You did a super fine job sharpening that knife.
Engineering and design was just better back then... Multiple effective uses, lasts forever and looks good doing it.
Not really, not at all actually, theres many multipurpose tools nowadays with even more functionality and longevity snd performance. Old stuff is cool, and new stuff isnt always perfect, but for even less money by todays standards you can get even better performance with more capabilities in a smaller package.
I have a 1950s Kirby vacuum that has many of the same attachments. Even has a paint gun lol

The Kirby company took this even farther with so many attachments it is beyond belief!
Yep, my grandmother had a 'System Seven' model from the early 60's that came with a floor polisher, carpet shampoo kit, vacuum head, moth ball duster for the closet, and a bench grinder attachment. Plus about 15 hose attachments and a matching hose. I still have it, all restored along with an even older model that came from my great grandfather's house. The older one is from the 1940's.
A family relative used to have a Kirby repair center back then so everyone in the family had one. Including myself, mine is from 1984.
I've seen one of those Bissel blowers before, it was attached to a peanut roaster being used at a farm market in PA years ago.
I hated emptying the bag... 😮🎉
Editing to say I did like the idea being the one to catch the change in the bottom of the tray part where you released the latch on the bag
Bro, why can't they do this today?! A vacuum/knife sharpener/pulley is exactly the combo I've been looking for. All I do is clean, sharpen, and pull shit around. This thing has been doing it for 3 generations!
This actually makes sense. It's a electric motor that has accessories.
If you had a small machine/work/wood shop it's perfect.
It's a motor setup for anything you might need. Ontop of that many devices at the time could use anything that was belt driven.
I saw an entire shop powered by one of these at an estate sale. Super clever.
👍 Made in 1913 but, yet still more versatile and practical than many common household tools and equipment today. You could probably run an old Jewelers lathe with that.
I don’t know how you look at this contraption and think anything remotely close to practical lol
I think a lot his what is convenient, this motor is loud and not meant for home use.
@@apo_chromaticyou watch anime? If so that invalidates any opinion you may have
Honestly you could probably run most smaller lathes. Like obviously you couldn't go making plywood, or cranking out bowls by the dozen, but I'm sure you could easily use it on a small metal lathe to make small custom parts around the shop, like screws and whatnot.
@@connorhart7597 yes sir, my dad has a Jewelers lay that is ran by a belt with a very similar pulley system. I like the idea of having one like that but integrated with a new brushless motor.
It also had attachments for pumping water, mowing the lawn, doing laundry, blowing leaves, a fan for cooling, chopping wood, bailing hay, cutting trees, tilling the garden…and cleaning your ears!
Brings a whole new meaning of _they don't make things like they used to_
There’s an unfortunate reason they don’t make stuff like this anymore
Because this was a multitool that took quantity over quality yeah it can do a lot of stuff but not better than individual tool made specific for one job, this kind of invention tried to be the best multitool so that you have a reason to buy it, then when you realize that its not any better than what you currently use you get tired of it.
Man it bugs me when people say this. Machines are an order of magnitude more reliable now than they were then. Adjusted for inflation they’re even often cheaper.
Sure there’s a bunch of cheaply made trash…but that’s because a lot of people don’t want to pay 2x or 3x for higher quality.
@@TheOfficialOriginalChad Paying more money doesn't always mean higher quality..
Yes, I updated that old saw about," you get what you pay for". The 2024 version is, " You get what you pay for, IF you're fookin' lucky!"
@@TTime685 how insightful.

Screw in multitool. This is older than the us standardized plug. This would have screwed into a light bulb socket.

It is a bit of a shame that Socially Distant Garbage On The Floor was cast out.
DUUUUUUUDE I love your channel and humor. Don’t stop the style you shoot your videos homie. 😊👍🤙❤️
And Bissel still killin it a hundred years later
Incredible. I read some of the comments here that said he tried to sharpen a serrated knife on that wheel. I had to go back and watch it again. He actually does! That's the way to RUIN a serrated knife. They cannot be sharpened that way. (Not correctly, if you want it to remain serrated.)
Looks like a cheap knife that is basically disposable though so its not a big deal
He's clearly not trying to sharpen it you dope, he's just messing about to get people like you to comment and show how 'superior' your knowledge is. And you could see him doing that in a short video and got it from the comments?😂😂😂
Yeah, it's funny that vacuums had so many attachments back in the day. My uncle was a Kirby salesman for years, 50s-70s. Kirby still had the knife sharpener option in the 70s! Salesmen aren't stupid. They know they need features that appeal to homemaker and husband.
You did a beautiful job of restoring it. Could this be the first electric multi tool?
My Vacugrind is always with me
They had the same thing on a larger scale for farms back in the day. I believe at first they were steam power then gas , but they would haul the engine around to run different farm equipment like hay ladders and bailers and what not.
Him sharpening the knife made me cry 😢
This is rookie level of multi-function. My dad had a tool that was a tankless air compressor, table saw, vacuum and drilling-machine combo... And you didn't "switch functions" it was ALL on, so you could fill up your tires with pressurized air/dust combo while cutting some wood with some 3rd rate dust extraction...
Your mom sounds like a lovely lady! Quite skilled.
Kirby ended up doing the same thing - my pop had one when I was a kid that did some of the same things, only adding the ability to put on a polishing wheel with some rouge that came with it!
God I miss and wish we could go back to making awesome made American goodness like this. Instead of the plastic Chinese crap we sold out for…smh. This is a gem!!💎
An O-ring or two would be great for this machine. What a cool piece of history
This was the corevof the modern home. It vacuumed, sharpened knives/tools and it also ran your washing machine so you didn't have to run a hit and miss, gas engine and you could bring the washer indoors from the porch, plus anything else you had (within reason) that was belt-driven. It really was an amazing advancement for a farm home. My grandparents had c one in their place, they kept it for other tasks once modern washers/vacuums came around. 😊
The sharp sucker 9000. Have an axe to grind? We've got you covered! Tired of your spouse sweeping cat litter under the couch? Clean-up is a breeze if you own one of these!
Haha! That's superb! 😂
It's really amazing that the duct tape is still as pristine as it is.
It's beautiful and you did a nice restoration
Why give customers value with a machine like that.... When you can sell them specialized tools that can only do one function. (Sometimes not well at all.) And then charge them separately for each tool.
And, to top it off, designed each of those specialty tools with planned obsolescence in mind so consumers are forced to buy a new one in 3 years 😂
Now Bissell only makes air filters when they USED to make whole vacuum cleaners that could do ANYTHING, as well as clean. What happened? 😢
The only people who cared for the company died. Everyone else just cares about profit.
He felt familiar, and after watching the cutting of cloth, I remembered that he appeared in one of the episodes of Tom and Jerry. This brought me back for some years.
that's a dog
😂
I got family still in Toledo, the town is a perfect example of what happens when large industry leaves an area in pursuit of profits over people. It's sad.
That is just awesome! Old school thought is the predisessor to the ultimate multi tool!
Very cool Old 1913 Bissell
And then corporations figured out “hey wait a minute! Why sell 1 tool with 3 functions when we could sell 3 tools with 1 function each? We could even sell those 3 each for the same price as the old one!”
I remember my grandmother had one she used in her sowing room in the 80s mostly her collection. She had a bunch of old sowing machines. But I remember her specifically using her singer
This is too cool. I gotta send this to Mr. Mixer. I bet he'll love that
Man, I love it.Thanks for saving history
Back when not only the made things good but they made a versatile so you can use it for multiple purposes. They're definitely a lot smarter back then designers and consumers
Looks great. Good job!
I love the idea of just a general purpose electric motor and every appliance having a pully to power it from
What a great find smart for restoring something so quality we need to go back to this Manufacturing
That is probably the coolest multitool 😃
Man wish companies still made appliances like this

There is an auction on ebay for an ad showing this machine. The ad details how this was used as a vacuum. It doesn't show the pully attachment at the end so possible someone got creative.
Finally! Someone else actually took the time to look up this device and not just parrot "it's a forge blower" without actually knowing what it is!
Gotta say, my mother's hover had those functions and more. Though much newer than 1913.

I can not believe the amount of people in this comment section that are arguing this is not a vacuum... It took me a minute or so to do the slightest bit of research to find the original advertisement for this *VACUUM!!!!!!!!* Maybe y'all should give it a try before asserting your "dominance" so aggressively 😂
A miniature farm motor meant for domestics instead of the barn. There were hundreds of designs of these things and a hundred times as many attachments.
This was made of metal, never broke, and cost 3 bits and an onion because people used to demand actual quality. Now you get a plastic vacuum for 900.00 and it starts smoking and melting if you pick up a penny.
The Skirt Grabber 9000! Wow! I bet that thing yanked many a skirt and assorted clothes with that revolving stone wheel over the years!
You may well be right sir...
Does make a lot of sense in the function you mentioned
the pulley was for powering your trendle powered sewing machine, its the perfect size for the belt
Awesome little bullet
I love how you always sharpen the serrated blades as if they are smooth.
Gets all the Muppets up in arms 😂
In the early 1900s it was common for products to be multifunctional because of limited space and cost
FYI - this can EASILY BE MADE with a modern day vacuum motor... in fact, i'm gonna go try this week
Kirby vacuum cleaners were famous for all the attachments you could put on it. You could even spray paint your car with one
Dang, 1913 and it still runs, restored or not is extremely impressive.
Literally anything made in 2013 will be a puddle of plastic in 100 years, hell even 25.
KitchenAid needs to step up their game because I want a vacuum attachment for my stand mixer now.
God,I love old tools,be it electric or manual.👌🏻
Thats genius! They never do logical things like this because thed rather sell you 4 different products that breakdown frequently instead of 1 rock solid machine that does it all and asks for more!
Kirby had something similar .. man our kirby did everything. Mom paid a lot of money.. it took her like 3 yrs to pay it off interest free.
