Mr. Zanger gave me my first job in 1996 when I was 16 to work at his restaurant. I worked weekends & holidays throughout my high school years. He was a good man.
We just ate at the Casa de Fruta restaurant on Sat. Sept. 9, 2023 and I asked our waitress about Eugene. She said that had sadly, passed away. I liked him and his cup flipper routine. I can still see him standing along side our table at the restaurant, flipping cups in the air. I won't forget him.
He was a wonderful host who made all of us feel welcome as the Casa de Fruta. It's a shame Letterman has to treat him as somebody weird. He wasn't. He just a very nice man who had a neato trick with the coffee cups. My whole family enjoyed seeing him do his little trick every time we visited there. He was a truly wonderful host.
Reminds me of casa de fruita when i was a kid. He was such a nice guy too.... I never thought id see that again. Thank you for posting it! kinda makes me want a buffalo burger after watching it!
When I was a kid in the 70's and 80's we always stopped at casa de fruta and saw him every so often on our way to Socal from San Jose. Also stopped for the dried apricots

This is pretty cool to see. My buddy works at Casa de Fruta and I was up there just a few minutes ago. They have cool refrigerator magnets with Eugene on them and the big sign announcing him is still out there.

Growing up. I had the pleasure to see the cup flipping up close and personal on a couple trips from Fresno to the coast.

Visiting Casa de Fruta I saw a news paper on the wall with this man on it. Pretty cool history to see when on vacation.

Such a great guy. The apple didn't fall far from the tree. His son Eugene is also a very good person.
He used to hand out buttons. I got one when I was a kid, thought he was pretty awesome.
