What is maxillary osteotomy? Now maxillary osteotomy is a cut made on the bone that is your upper jaw to move that jaw appropriately to fix your problems with the bite or problems with the facial profile or patients with cleft lip and palette and also sometimes patients with sleep apnea. Now maxillary osteotomy is usually done after skeletal maturity. That is the right time to do now. When do you actually attain skeletal maturity it is different for different people. But generally speaking women attain skeletal maturity at around 16 to 18 years of age whereas men attain skeletal maturity at around 18 to 20 years of age slightly later than women. Now that is the appropriate time to do corrective jaw surgery especially the maxillary osteotomy. Now in maxillary osteotomy we make a cut on your mailla bone all the cuts are done inside there are no scars outside the cuts are in the jaw in the upper gums basically and we make the cuts and move the maxilla forward, backward, upward or downward depending upon what is your requirement and then you're discharged from the hospital usually on the next day or the day after. It is a very satisfying surgery you will require orthodontics or braces before or and after the surgery sometimes to make your teeth alignment proper after the corrective jaw surgery. Usually before maxillary ostomy we always do something called as virtual surgical planning where we actually perform the surgery on a software depending upon the CT scan of your facial bones so that we are totally prepared at the time of surgery to make the cuts exactly and accurately during the surgery.
