They originally wrote it for Marvin Gaye (who ended up not using it AFAIK) in an R&B style, but later changed it for the Kenny Rogers album. Not so sure they actually used the song themselves before the Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton version, as the first version recorded by the Bee Gees was from a live performance in November 1997 and a subsequent studio version was released in 2001. The first cover versions released appears to be with lyrics in Swedish (1983) and Danish (1984)

countrygirl countrymusiclover, being born in '93 means that you made your debut just as the last remnants of true country music were leaving the airwaves. As for the '60s and '70s, there was great music out from several genres. I will not dwell on details but, you truly did have to be there to appreciate the entire picture of everyday life. And like you, I would not trade being a '60s kid and '70s teen for any other era.
I forgot Kenny Rogers started out as a Pop singer with the First Edition before he became a famous Country and Western Singer. What a great voice he has.
you were still wearing hotpants and gogo boots in 1980??????? you musta stuck out like a time traveler from the '60s coz nobody was wearing that kinda getup 40 years ago

"I woke up this mornin' with the sundown shinin' in
I found my mind in a brown paper bag within
I tripped on a cloud and fell-a eight miles high
I tore my mind on a jagged sky

I saw so much I broke my mind
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in

I had my foot on the gas as I left the road and blew out my mind
Eight miles out of Memphis and I got no spare

You never knew Kenny Rogers had sung this.
Man what memories I’m thankful I grew up in that era.
countrygirl countrymusiclover, being born in '93 means that you made your debut just as the last remnants of true country music were leaving the airwaves. As for the '60s and '70s, there was great music out from several genres. I will not dwell on details but, you truly did have to be there to appreciate the entire picture of everyday life. And like you, I would not trade being a '60s kid and '70s teen for any other era.
I saw myself crawling out as I was crawling in ! Great line!
Jay Given Momma told me not to come.
Definitely gets my ears attention!
This song blew my mind. Who knew Kenny was so hard core....
This song really tied the movie together
YOUR OUT OF YOU ELEMENT KIMMY 😂
And they pull it off live, to their eternal credit. No prerec track, and no session band fronting.
I forgot Kenny Rogers started out as a Pop singer with the First Edition before he became a famous Country and Western Singer. What a great voice he has.
Started as a folk singer with the New Christy Minstrels
I can watch this non-stop and never get sick of it. Mr Kenny Rogers is an Icon.
A fantastic song that epitomizes psychedelia.
it was supposed to be a warning but turned into an anthem
I really miss my hotpants and gogo boots now........haven't fit in either one for, oh, 40 years now.
Loving the double tambourine action!
I miss the whole 1970's decade...Cool times. Nice cars, music, easier way of life.
I bet your still hott!
Oh my yes!!! Hot pants were so special! I had my share an loved every pair I ever owned!
you were still wearing hotpants and gogo boots in 1980??????? you musta stuck out like a time traveler from the '60s coz nobody was wearing that kinda getup 40 years ago
I watched myself crawlin out as I was crawlin in.
Man, those were the days.
Hard to think of Kenny as a stoner.
You were one of the Greats.
Rest in Peace, Kenny Rogers
I graduated H.S. in 67 when this song came out. At the time (and for quite a few years afterwards), I was living this song. One might call it my "experimental" years. Who do I need to thank for the trip back to memory lane?
Glad to see you survived. Some didn't.
@@joebeeler990 Yes, I am aware of that. I sometimes wonder how I survived. But I have to admit, those times left me with some "interesting" memories...both good and bad.

Still a GREAT SONG & PERFORMANCE in 2019!
Always has been one of my favorite's.
The greatest song by an artist you never imagined would head in the direction he ultimately did!
he passed away today but his music will live thankyou for your talent and all your wonderfull songs!!
I'm still here listening to Kenny.
Its now 2022. My #1. ❤🎶
Very talented bunch, and love how the drummer is out front & center! What a cast of acid soaked characters!
That is Mickey Jones who was also one hell of an actor. He stood in for Levon Helm after he quit when Dylan toured Europe and Australia. Dude is an unsung hero of the job site too...
@@BCFarbo he was a member of K&B Construction on Home Improvement, loved when he played in the "Tool Band".. lmao
Drummer was an actor too. I best remember him as the big dopey guy in Roadhouse.
Mickey was regular cast member on Home Improvement.
“Eight miles straight up downtown somewhere.” Yeah !
... And fallin' fast...
Yeah that's where it was, "downtown upstairs somewhere"
🎱KEH
Rest in peace Kenny Rogers... he blessed us with some fantastic music thank you so much
Saw him in 1968 sing that song in Manhattan Kansas it was a wild experience !! R.I.P. Kenny R.
This clip which brought back memories of a Jr. high school english class I had.
The teacher had us study the lyrics to this song as poetry. I don't think a teacher would be allowed nowadays. Truly, I think society had more freedom to think 45 yrs ago than in today's information age
Ah yes, in the day. A friend recited the entire American Pie for his final poem in our sr. English class. The lady teacher also let you know that she would roll one up at home with no reservations. My friend got an A+.
Man Fangui Oh ya. Our freedoms r bein' curtailed one after another. Looking back it's very plain and obvious. America's best years r over for sure, as is the best music
One of the best songs ever written.
I remember watching this performance on prime time TV ❤❤❤
RIP Kenny Rogers. This particular style and time of his music will always be dearest to me--his rock music style ❤❤❤ This song is total kick ass!
I love this song! I just returned from my second tour of sunny South East Asia and this song was playing, it was quite fitting actually!
WHAT! had no idea Kenny Rogers and First Edition were responsible for my favorite song. The Dude Abides
As good of a clip as you will ever see from that era. Live vocals, musicians, and if you screw up, that is live too! Extremely clear visually. One-thousand dislikes are from the digital wizardry karaoke citizens. A much better sound than my AM transistor was the first time I heard it. As a sound guy, major props go to the audio engineer! :-)
Iconic. One of the greatest songs of all-time.
Yes. Great kick butt song. Never gets old. I wish Kenny would had done more rock & roll...great song in my teenage years from 67 till I graduated in 1972...this song still rocks...I'm a 60s-70s dude forever
Who's here in 2024

A country-rock storytelling song with great harmonies. Which is what the Eagles took to superstardom. Those were such great times. Rip Kenny.
nothing country about this one; psychedelic rock.
Kenny Rogers, sure loved that man! Got to see him and First Edition a couple times in Cincinnati! Loved when I grew up!
Man that song is more rockin and soulful than what i remembered! Hadn't heard it since I was a kid 50 years or so ago.
