The captain had a major incident with his air officer (who had been previously put ashore), and the captain requested permission (which was granted) to proceed home so as to initiate court martial proceedings against the air officer. The captain had no aircraft on patrol above the ship or on standby, and there were no lookouts on station when the ship was attacked.
