I've been spraying for 40 years and still get a kick out of the way you handle a spraygun. I've taught several people to spray over the years with various degrees of success, some people pick it up easily, and some people couldn't drink the paint and piss it on! lol. The bacofoil/aluminium foil trick for masking works really well when painting motorcycles (always take the battery off first though in case the foil shorts out electrics and causes a fire). I clean my sprayguns out with another spraygun filled with gun wash, saves time and is really quick. Keep up the great content mate.
Gunny, you will always get the moaners. They tend to be the keyboard warriors who couldn't paint a barn door with a fire hose! Keep doing what you're doing, we're with you all the way. Looking forward to seeing the Torana on the road.
These people likely haven't left their homes in a week let alone done any real work. I can't believe that there's anyone who's actually removed an engine before that would give him grief for not doing so.
Do what you want, when you want and why you want. I hear you when you say you just want to drive it. I enjoy driving the older cars with the sound and that the next car around you ain't like the one your driving. Great job I'm sure this will look the part.
Hi Gunny, I spent two hours shopping for the family yesterday and two hours Polishing a wheel arch trim after I thought what a waste of time but then I could have spent 2 hours or even more trying to find a second hand one. Sometimes it's better to fix what you have in your hand. I wish I knew about the rust stopper you use before. I used rust converting primer from supercheap and fingers crossed. So true about where do you stop. This has always been a personal internal battle with me lol I'm glad you're having fun and getting shit done mate, I like to see good people do well!
You are exactly right about going too far. Everyone wants a complete tear down frame off resto. Very few of them have actually done it or realize how much extra work it is. Love the videos man. Thanks for making that point. I recently became self aware of this quality of mine and I would start to resent my projects too! Looks great!
You are absolutely right....do what makes you happy! If you were doing a concours restoration, yes, everything would come apart. This is a great refresh of a classic car to enjoy, no one will see the underside or the nooks and crannies of the engine bay. It will look great back on the road!
Far out saw this upon viewing a truck tyre job video on seek while paused - my point being RUclips knows I was hanging out for a Gunman video! Love the series, love the work and in depth rambling on haha Pumps me up seeing the progress till the finish product. Melbounre weather today sucked bad.
It's your choice bro if you take the motor out or not and it's coming along awesomely. But I would take it out just to make it's clean and hit it up in some of those spots. Keep up the great work
Good idea, if it will be your home project, do it a piece at a time and enjoy it. Anything that needs to be addressed later can be and will be enjoyable.
So true of resentment, It eats you up. it's no good on any platform. We've all been there to some degree. It's great your excited, it's contagious. Yew.😆
Hey Gunny, with the engine bay do you go straight to a base coat wet on wet or within a recoat window? Or do you have to sand the epoxy and then apply basecoat? Cheers. Agree projects, never get done of you keep adding things on top of it.
Hey gunny loving this project mate, well done. I'm about to start pulling down my 77 LX Torana to do a full body restoration. It's had a bad previous Paint job. The paint is actually lifting in places so I'm going to take it right back to metal and epoxy prime it. You know these cars so well now, how many litres of primer will I need to cover the entire car properly mate?
I have an obscure question. I bought a piece of heavy machinery and one of the body panels is also part of the hydraulic tank. It's 3/16 steel and I'm not going to pull the dent out in fear of cracking the tank. The dent is about 1inch deep at maximum and 12-16 inches round. I want to use body filler to make it look better. What do you think
Use some fibreglass filler first in the lowest areas, when it's 90% full then use some lightweight body filler. But mate, it will be totally fine as long as you do the prep properly.
Hey Gunman can you recommend a suitable hose for spray painting? Completed my first acrylic paint job on a Honda civic using a hired Bunnings compressor from your tips turned out mint!
I'd bet a good amount of money these critics have never removed an engine, or painted a car. Anyone that's done this work would be doing the same thing. Last thing I'm gonna do is waste hours of free time after work ripping out an engine just to toss it right back in. The Internet has caused a serious issue with detachment from reality.
The engine being masked up made me smile😊 Can anyone give me any tips? spraying with a star s770 suction feed gun When I spray on a vertical surface, it seems as though the top and bottom of the fan/spray pattern comes out dry, leaving a sandy finish. I'm following all the stuff on the data sheet for thinning, temperature, surface prep, pressure etc. To a tee. The middle of my spray pattern seems spot on and the fan seems the right size but just the very edges seems as though too much air is coming out not fadong from the centre out to the edges. It doesn't seem to make a difference how close I spray, too close and ot would be way too wet in the middle but still dry paint on the edge.
Hi Gunny, whats your thoughts on priming the pare metal before sealer? i used to use the PU over bare metal but found after a several years it would rust behind the pu sealer, when i started priming it first i never saw any rusting, when i was working at a london taxi shop i would see the same vehicles over a long period of time as we had repeat customers and our own fleet of cabs that were always in and out for service and overhauls etc
Its coming together nicely 👌.. I may have used some Upol bedliner thinned out in the engine bay just to soften the look and hide any bad areas but i'm sure it will look fine.
Great job, Is there a 2k epoxy primer in a spray can that you could recommend for small repair sections instead of mixing paint and using a spray gun? Thanks
Hi gunman really enjoying the videos on the torana I’m just wondering what type of filter that is you have running in the shed while your spraying I’m looking at doing some spraying at home and would like some type of filter just don’t wanna upset the neighbors appreciate any info cheers.
I did the same with my engine bay, I figure eventually I'll need to remove the engine at which time I'll re do the paint if necessary. It's just way outside the scope to do that work for no reason, like you, I'm just trying to get on the road, mechanically sound and looking nice.
Mate Really rate your videos! I'm a mechanic by trade, doing up a WB tonner. Always been shit scared of the wizardry behind painting and panel work. Every bastards got a different way or happy to fling shit! Really Rate the honesty of your vids and realistic approach to getting shit done! Find myself often reviewing your vids when I get stuck keep up the good work 🍻🍻
Not necessary, I use 1.8 if I'm going to use it on bare metal in ages I'll be sanding for a bit of extra build, but here I used 1.3 because I sprayed black straight over it.
Great to see another update from you Gunny I was wondering how the build is going, take no notice of the armchair experts mate they are just trying to make you spend more money, you do you Gunny it's your resto so you go as far as you want with it👌 As you have said before this isn't going to be a show car but a daily driver for you to enjoy but if it's a concourse resto then you will be frightened to use it in case it gets scratched, looking forward to the next one👏🙏👍John UK
I know that you have the experience to calculate the amount of paint to put in the gun but is there some process by which a novice work out the amount of paint to mix?
I'm all good with you not dropping the k-Frame/Engine etc out... But, I recon removing the blower fan would have been a good idea mate... Just a few screws...
You could always just take that one extra thing off. But you do what you do, I do me, you do you 😀 there have been times I attempt to remove something to realise I'm probably going to break it or something, so I backtrack and put it back on and work around it
Thort someone would have said it. If you read the instructions 10 times i sussed out that heavy to rusty holes you clean the area best you can wire wheel etc, then spray on and its got to stay wet for 10min, n leave it over night. Then if its light surface rust or etch before paint, you spray converter on then must neutralise it with water so wash off with hose or rag and dry straight away with clean rag. The its etched metal agen with rust protection. Even if you sand blast a car must alway treat the bare steel. 🤙
Have you guys seen those turkish guys who paint cars with some kind of pressure washer? I think it's called Gurcoat, and it looks like ass, but they seem to have a lot of customers. Makes me wonder if a roller paintjob is crazy or not.
Just a quick vid this week guys, I've been very busy. Happy Easter everyone!! :)

Did you think about using carbon-fiber powder in your coatings? Specifically in polyester coatings?
Great to see any update Mr Gunman.

You can definitely get epoxy primers in a spray can but I don't know if 2K is popular.
