    Great build Gary.......glad to see you DIDN'T go for an Aircraft with a Torpedo AND Rockets, as from what I understand, going by the coordinated attacks mounted by 455 RAAF and 489 RNZAF Squadrons as part of the "Anzac Strike Wing" of Coastal Command, the Rockbeaus hit with rockets which slowed, or stopped the target ship, while the Torbeaus sunk them with their torpedoes. So a mixed payload reduced the effective range to target. I love the weathering job.

    Nice weathering. Have you ever used the Flory models clay washes? I hit the model with a coat of clear varnish then put the decals on. After that it gets another coat of clear to seal the decals and then a rub down with around a 1500 sanding sponge to get it dead smooth. The Flory wash can then be put on quite heavily and when dry rubbed off with a very slightly damp tissue to get good panel lines. The surface is then ideal for oil washes.

      Thanks Guy - I'm very happy with it as a well-used squadron 'hack' flying over the salty North sea day after day! Also glad to have cracked the collector rings on the engines - now I use burnt iron first then dull it down with some mid-rust coloured powder and you get that bronze look but without the shine. Enjoying it all, which is the main thing!

  • @julianmhall
    @julianmhall Год назад +2

    Lovely model Gary :)
    Re the figures:
    Agreed they only need to be good enough for normal viewing distance. I mentioned viewing distance to Gavin Booth yesterday re his model of the USS Lexington.
    Something I forgot to mention in your unboxing video of this one. The poses of the figures in the instructions are /different/ from the figures supplied, as if the ones supplied are just a standard moulding - they're identical so maybe so - or the figures in the instructions are just standard computer models the designer has dropped in.
    Regarding weaponry I think you're right. In the ground attack role it had rockets, and in maritime use had a torpedo. Different marks used in each (Wikipedia claims the Mk21 had rockets) so I think you're spot on to say it didn't have both at the same time. Wartime photos seem to bear that out.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  Год назад +1

      The figure in the instructions are messed with in many ways, not least of which into include a portrait of one of the designers or other team members. They do have a set of standard figures, but not all will fit in every model - for example, the Mossie can't contain a navigator from their set of figures. I think part of the issue is that the internal dimension is always less than scale because of the out-of-scale thickness of the walls! Having standard figures also has its issues - I once got a harrier GR7 kit with a pilot figure sporting goggles and leather flying helmet as they'd put the wrong stock figure in!
      I have seen footage of the Beau being used with rockets against shipping too - indeed on the IWM site there is a film about rockets that shows how they were to land them slightly short so the rockets would hit below the water line. Really interesting film.

  • @ronaldbyrne3320

    Like your weathering work on the model very much Gary. And how you painted the pilot and observer. That colour scheme is really attractive. In two minds now about doing the Malaya-based Beaufighter, but I most likely will stick with that.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  Год назад +2

      Go with your gut on colours - I'd say the Malaya one is unusual enough to be worth it - you can always get another Beau at a later date!

    I always wonder about the size of the pilots in those kits. The pilot has about a foot and a half (scale, of course) of headroom in the cockpit. It's just a little detail but this kind of stuff always bothers me. But I really love the paint scheme you picked!

    You were right about the fuel dumps - There's fuel tanks each side of the engines, with two jettison pipes (one fro each tank) feed into it from inside the nacelle.
    My grandad flew in Beaufighters (Coastal Command) - earlier models though... just a bubble canopy with no gun.

    Nice build Gary, looks very good in the coastal command scheme.
    Shame that the undercarriage is so fiddly to fit together. Can't help thinking that they could have come up with an easier way of building it up.

    • @julianmhall
      @julianmhall Год назад +2

      Personally I'd /suggest/ doing the undercarriage in a different order. The A frames first, /then/ the main vertical leg and let it start to dry so it's held but still moveable, /then/ the actuators that fit into the bottom of them. That way there's only one moving part at once.

Thanks

      Yes, sorry about the [paint. I used to do it all the time but really just forgot on this one. I used Vallejo Dark Grey 71.110 and BS Dark Green 71.324 for the camouflage and White 71.001 over the fuselage. For an all-over white I would normally use a white spray primer, but as I wanted this one to be a bit grubbier I used my usual grey primer then two coats of white.
