He's such a fool. He's believing all Ling's counter attacks when she's accused of all sorts of vicious, murderous things, but the one thing that gets under his skin is her attempt to mess with his royal bloodline. That's what makes him get out of his chair? Not the death of his sons and daughters, not the framing of Ruyi, her ruined reputation, her banishment to the Cold Palace for 3 years, his pathological jealousy of her and Ling Yunche based on nothing more than whispers in the dark intended to ruin her, among all her other malicious behavior, but let her try to seduce a lowly guard to pass off a royal heir to improve her standing in the harem ladder of success - that's what brings him to his feet. And even then, he sits back down as if a troubadour is telling a folk tale and he's just there to be entertained. If not for Empress Dowager entering the circus, Ling would have talked him around her little finger like she always did and chances are that Hailan, ChunChan, her own brother and her loyal eunuch guard and suck up Wangchan would have been sent to the Punishment Bureau never to be heard from again. He can't wrap his head around the fact that she's this evil and has been so for this long because he knows she's a product of himself: he trained her since her early teens to be exactly like himself; in a twisted, sick way, deep inside he's hoping she can and will talk herself out of what looks to be a deeper and deeper hole. He is too quick to believe a smooth talker and she is exactly that: the mushrooms helped because it suddenly became 'show and tell' time, and he was still on the fence about her all encompassing darkness, but the moment the Scripture flags were unfolded and spread completely across the room, knowing Ruyi is the Queen of silent messages without saying a word, (the birthday sweets with a written message that looked as if HE wrote it to himself, a certain kind of soup for Empress Dowager, a pastry for Hailan to tear open and find a bracelet to point the finger at Jia's meddling and traitorous actions to get her son named Crown Prince-just to mention a few), reality hit him as hard as he backhanded Ruyi that day on the boat. The Scripture flags tied all of Ling's evil plans and deeds into a mental image even his humongous ego couldn't back away from: that he had promoted her behavior, rewarded her behavior, believed her lies, perpetrated her evil throughout not just the harem but the entire palace all for her own gain that cost innocent people to be tortured and innocent lives to be extinguished all because he needed his ego stroked and she was the one who was always willing to do it. She cared nothing about protecting his reputation or serving the realm, she cared about lining her own pockets and being in the power seat in the harem which would have reflected well on her clan which also would have served her well in her clan being proud of her, so the clan would have rewarded her as well. In truth, had she been a man, she would have made a much better emperor than he did: he was spineless with an immense inferiority complex, let jealousy and lust rule him at every turn, unfocused and even let his servants 'suggest', under the guise of making comments, what his action should be about certain instances, but she needed no such input: she was strategic, decisive, focused, ruthless, unashamed, unrepentant and fearless: the more she got away with, the more daring and fearless she became. For decades, she lived, breathed and functioned as a serial killer in his main palace and he was completely clueless. I am still trying to figure out, however, as Ling turns around and looks at the unfurling of the Scripture flags if her face registers disbelief because Ruyi figured out every single person Ling has been instrumental in killing or having executed or if she is truly surprised at the vast number of lives she took but never really counted them: she'd kill and move on to eliminate her next target, never looking back but only looking forward. Maybe it is a combination of both Ruyi knowing all her darkest, dirtiest secrets and sharing them with the world via her own 'show and tell' as well as being overwhelmed herself at how many lives her actions and words destroyed.

The sad thing is even though he gives her that soup that’s is supposed to killer her. It doesn’t he doesn’t t kill her for years after when its close to the time he is about to pass on and then he gives her son the honer of being the next emperor.
