Why Harley-Davidson Is Struggling In India

- Harley-Davidson may be the biggest name in American motorcycles, but the U.S. market is aging and shrinking. India and southeast Asia, with massive and growing markets, offered Harley-Davidson hope. But the legendary maker of big iron 'hogs' faces fierce competition in India. In order to succeed, Harley will need to make smaller and cheaper bikes that its most loyal fans might not recognize.

Why Harley-Davidson Is Struggling In India

@@fwefhwe4232 thats what yang xu meant. Its a tool for us for transportation rather than for just roaming around like road trips.
if you own Harley-Davidson you surely dont care about mileage i think. Harley-Davidson byke represent other great cultural values. Its like owning a super car. so its obvious why Harley-Davidson is struggling in India.
True, but in the context of this question, irrelevant. Harleys in every country are not for those who need a tool, but those who can afford an expensive hobby. So, exactly the other group of people, and thus, your answer misses the point completely.
@@tarcal87 agreed, but with one key difference: in western countries, that "expensive hobby" is relatively less expensive to those hobbyists than it would be in India due to prevailing income levels and purchasing power..

The larger question is: “Why is Harley-Davidson struggling EVERYWHERE?” The answer is: “Because they are still building ‘grandpa bikes’.” Whenever you hear a Harley rumble up to a stoplight what do you see 95% of the time? OLD, FAT & GRAY guys wearing leather jackets usually with those silly tassels, and leather chaps.
Yup....weekend outlaw wanna-be’s. This image does not appeal to the younger generations of riders (those who are less than 55 years old).
Harley-Davidson thinks that bumping up their iconic V-Twin a few cubic inches every year is enough to keep their core customers coming back. The trouble is, they are a dying breed (literally & figuratively speaking).
H-D has let this situation go on far too long. Now they are desperately trying to roll out motorcycles that might appeal to younger riders, but their bikes are still too heavy, too slow, and lack the latest suspension technologies.
AND..... they are still far more expensive than competitors’ bikes.
Harley-Davidson’s days are numbered.

1. cost of motorcycles...... Is by design. Harley corporate has high margins on vehicles sold, and Harley dealers pay very expensive rent on their stores.

cnbc : Why Harley-Davidson Is Struggling In India ?
ans : it should .
Good answer.
Is he crazy 70% of Indian's have motercycles.
Royal enfield is a British bike company from its roots older than harley davidson , and now its doing wonders being an indian company
Japanese takeing Indian market
And they deserve because of their bikes
China taking indian markets :0
Btw indian brands own two Wheeler market
Indian bike companies like royale enfield , hero , bajaj , and suzuki own indian market
@@darshan5726 royal Enfield and Suzuki is not Indian
@@btsarmy-wo5ry Suzuki is not indian but royal Enfield is an indian brand
Harley as a company relies too much on nostalgia to sell their products, at and above premium too, so when all the people who have any fond memories of their bikes die out so will their company, greed will get you in the end, it's inevitable.
And the Chinese knock them off and makes a more reliable motorcycle.
Can we allhr
What "greed"? What I see is a company, paying American union wages and benefits, producing an antiquated product line constrained by its customers' nostalgic expectations.
If Harley innovates, it loses its identity and its core customer base. If it doesn't, as that customer base dies off, so does its sales. And, without innovation, it will not appeal to enough of a younger crowd.
Remember the V-Rod? That was an attempt to produce a more modern Harley, and the customer base rejected it. To a certain degree, it's damned if you do and damned if you don't.
The other day, I was looking at a Harley Whatchamaglide, (I don't remember exactly what it was). But I was struck by how massively built everything was compared to my Ducati. This thing was pulling a trailer with luggage and likely carrying a couple of middle-aged lard-a****. It looked to be a well-built machine, and as a mechanical engineer, I could see that there was a huge amount of materials and expensive machine work, and finishing like polishing, plating, painting, and anodizing.
I can only imagine what it costs to produce a bike like that Harley, which likely weighs 800lb. (My Ducati is around 380lb). It can't be cheap, especially in low numbers relative to Japanese companies like Honda, which rely on economies of scale to keep prices low.
So, it doesn't seem to me that Harley Davidson is "greedy", as much as it is a company stuck between a rock and a hard place.
@@watchman1872 You do realize they've cut American jobs and shifted to factories in Thailand and other nations with the expressed intent to cut wages and keep prices the same so they can make higher profits with lower quality
@@watchman1872 The Chinese could take these motorcycles copies them, and makes them more up to date like 15 years ahead of it's time. The orignal Harleys have an analog speedometer half digital, the Chinese knockoffs use fully digital speedometer, more up to date and if you compare a Harley-Davidson original and a Chinese clone is by the oil leaks.
If you see an oil leak and is dripping oil from the tank, it is an American made Harley even if it's brand new, if you don't see an oil leak, it's a Chinese clone of a Harley-Davidson.
Yes their is also a Korean clone of a V-Rod that has a better build quality compared to the orignal V-Rod from Hyosung.
The Chinese clone V-Rod is faster than the original and more technologically advanced than the original.
And when it comes to the original Harley-Davidson and the Lifan equivalent of a Harley-Davidson clone from China.
It seems to be that the Lifan Harley-Davidson clone from China is more reliable than the original Harley-Davidson.
So if it looks like identical to a Harley-Davidson and peforms like a Honda, it has to be a Chinese clone of a Harley-Davidson.
That's the truth!
Bcz royalenfield price is much lower.
And RE has large service centre
Any mechanic can service RE bike
Maneuvering a Road King through Mumbai traffic would be about as much fun as taking Hero Splendor across the length of I-90.
Harley could be successful in India if they did what they needed to do in America - make affordable, reliable bikes - like the Japanese. They refused to do that in America, why would they do it anywhere else?
Mark S you are wrong again it’s because that segment has been captured by Royal Enfield
Harley is over priced and under performing, nothing but image!!
Harley is NOT affordable NOW in the US! Indian is better made and cheaper now than Harley.

I've owned an 883 and a 48 here in India. Trust me you wouldn't like to sit on an Air-cooled 1200 cc or 883 in Indian weather which hit 45 Degree in summers.
I've used a Ducati Monster 821 which had a better Gas Milage and better cooling system.
However, I would still consider Buying a Royal enfield considering its price, reliability and maintenance cost.
You can consider Jawa, KTM RC, DUKE and Adventure 390 too
Harley sells sub standard products in Bharat/India. Their entry level bike had serious issues with the disk break, which had failed for many users. And the most shocking thing is that Harley knew about this issue beforehand.
I just want US viewers to realise that Indian consumer will not behave like Chinese, even if there is growth in future, they will probably not behave like Chinese did in 2010s.
A lot of purchases especially automobiles come with utilitarian mindset - we are not going to buy a car with 10 kmpl mileage just because it looks "cool". Japanese & Korean automotive companies have invested time in India & learnt from people's choices. That's why they are doing well. Don't come here to just be part of the gravy train. Majority of American motor companies come with American thinking & thinking whatever works in 'merica will work in India too.
Some of the failures are obvious - Ford, Chevrolet, Harley Davidson, Fiat etc.
Sagar Roongta I agree, and I am American. I won’t buy a Harley. They have been making the same outdated bike for many many years and it’s terribly expensive. Honda made the goldwing in the US for less money years go than a comparable Harley Davidson. And you got way more, and the reliability is there. I know people at 50,000 miles needing their Harley engine rebuilt, I know people with 300,000 miles on their goldwing.
Fiat is a Italian brand btw.
@@alessiozhou1172 I think Ford has stakes in Fiat sales in India that's why he is telling
@@alessiozhou1172 My bad. Fiat is indeed originally Italian. Though Fiat owned Jeep's latest model (Compass) has done excellent in India.

Real question is why am I getting recommended all of these “why (brand name) failed in India”
They have to compete with royal Enfield man😂😂😂
#1 Fuel cost : harley doesn't have any fuel efficient models with smaller engine capacities
#2 Harley costs a premium there. Not just the initial costs of purchasing the bike, parts are extremely costly and service centres are scarce
#3 motorcycles are purchased as a cheap mode of transportation.. Very small number of Indians purchase it for the rising pleasure
Basically it's the cost that plays, the initial cost, the running cost including fuel prices, etc
@Fallen Angel well... I don't know if you have ridden a harley (not the locally manufactured street 750) ... Yamaha manufacturers some good bikes but it's not the best, hop onto a Pinagale or HP4 and you will understand what I am saying. As far as RE is concerned, it's not a bad bike, especially for its price and fuel efficiency but it's far from being a good bike. It's has a lot of issues from vibrations to electrical problems. It doesn't value safety at all. Only recently it has introduced ABS since it became mandatory but that too single channel. It's brakes are pretty bad and much more. However for the price and considering it's low running cost, it's worth every penny but to say that it's better than a harley is far too much a stretch
Fallen Angel lol RE is nowhere near to how good HD is
Straight away i would say we prefer Japanese over american products.... reliability and vfm is usp here.... honda/yamaha will survive long in markets jzt bcoz they did a better market study.....

high import taxes provided them a domestic advantage.
And China stuff is at most crap, chinese copy-cats.
@@RR-ll2ns Made in China knockoff of Harley-Davidson = Made in Japan quality.
The most important part that they missed is the economics involved here. An average Indian would earn about 15,000 to 20,000 rs per month, making a bike like Royal Enfield (which would currently cost anywhere around 2 lakhs) probably a distant dream in itself. Forget about Harley Davidson and other big bikes from other manufacturers. Whereas a person in US might earn 5000 dollars per month average and can very easily go for such big bikes. Simply put, that’s very much the reason they left India

Lambo has low ground clearance, among high end brands Land rover is more suited to Indian roads

They don't sell you because you can't even spell harley davidson right 😁🤣🤣🤣🤣
Taxes in India almost doubles the price of harley Davidson's bikes as it is considered as a luxury good by the government and thus high taxes are charged
India produces good and affordable bikes that suit its people’s budgets and needs better than Harley ever could . Harley is dying out in its homeland too . The bikers have aged out , very few people under the age of thirty want a Harley or anything like it . In other words Harley is stuck in the past and assumes it’s name can still demand a higher price for a technologically inferior product
