when a player is ejected he leaves the game. All other sports when a player is ejected / red carded the team is penalised by playing one player short on the field. Why does this not happen in American football?
If I had to guess, it'd be because of quarterback safety. Usually the offensive line block incoming players man to man. Sometimes the other team will blitz, but that means leaving a receiver open, and so the quarterback could throw the ball to them quick in order to protect himself. If the other team has an extra man who could just rush the quarterback, he'd be more likely to get severely injured. This is especially true when the player is coming from his blind side. Imagine just standing still and someone runs full speed into you
