My strongest opinion that doesn't actually matter is that Clara should always be on flats, not pointe. She is the child audience identification character, and being en pointe takes away from that somewhat.
100% on Clara. If your production of the Nutcracker calls the main character “Marie” then I’m… not really gonna do much bc it’s not a big deal. But I will squint my eyes at the program.
Its not a big detail but there are actually three names (that I know of) for Clara they’re Clara (used by most European companies), Marie (used by most American or amicable influenced schools) and Marsha (used by vaganova and other related school)

Mother Ginger all the way.....only because so many productions completely cut that bit out. I think it's a really cute divertissement that gets overlooked way too much.
Why would anybody cut out mother Ginger with all the adorable children who are studying ballet? It is such a wonderful opportunity to give young dancers a chance to perform, and also for us all to take joy in their precious little dancing selves! I do not vote to remove mother Ginger! 😊

The version I grew up going to see combined the names for a lot of the dances. So Spanish/chocolate was “Spanish chocolate” but Russian was “candy canes”
My son's school had both. The little teeny kids were the baby mice...who were chased off by the rats. He was a baby mouse one year, then a party boy the next year. Then...he chose skating over dance. Sigh.
Ok so the point of the candies is that they are a certain culture. For example: in my nutcracker ribbon candy is Russian, taffy is Arabian and bubblegum is Chinese. It’s different for everyone one like if I were to say Arabian than everyone would also know if was taffy cuz they are the same thing. ❤

I know this only because I have a book telling the story with pictures of the performance when Macaulay Culkin played the nutcracker and I did a project on the nutcracker for a dance class.

No hate but as an asian person in dance myself the fact that people still call Tea "Chinese dance" and Coffee "Arabian dance" kind of bothers me because it's practically saying that Asian and Middle eastern people are just some novelty act next to literal candy. It feels really icky too because it means that dancers (primarily white dancers) aren't even playing drinks or sweets anymore but actual ethnicities and cultures. Why not call it Chinese Tea or Arabic Coffee? (Edit: Now that I think of it, if all the sweets are just different ethnicities now then it makes no sense to call it land of sweets anymore lol)
I think it has to do with the fact that when the ballet was brought to America they connected the dances with sweets, in Europe I’ve never seen a production with dances called Arabian coffee, that was completely new when I watched nyc ballet’s nutcracker. In Europe it is almost always Arabian or Chinese I don’t know if that’s any better but they aren’t connected to sweets or drinks. Remember these are only one minute ish dances so they don’t play a massive role in the ballet.

If you rear-end someone on the road because you weren't paying attention, do you get a pass from the courts because it was never your intention to hurt anyone? No. We are responsible for the legal harm we cause, and we are responsible for the social harm we cause. Whose shoes are we meant to walk in? Yours? It's not your culture that's being paraded around as a grotesquerie on stages "all over the world". As you indicate, The Nutcracker is an ambassador for ballet. If this is the only example of ballet so many people see, shouldn't it express a more respectful and intellectually honest face? Should people walk away from the only ballet they'll see thinking that ballet as an artform habitually abuses stylistic features of other cultures in irresponsible ways that are entirely agnostic of history and context? This isn't about being "triggered", it's about learning not to cherrypick elements of other cultures for your own fun and profit while ignoring their lived experience. Now, that said, as a person of Arab heritage, the Arabic variation doesn't bother me much (except for the painted-on goatees, which are an element of brownface. THAT needs to go). It varies between companies with the name of Clara. In the original story by ETA Hoffman the girl is named Marie but the name was changed when the ballet was choreographed to better suit the image that Tchaikovsky wanted for the ballet
Guys isn’t marzipan and mother ginger two different things? I have seen many different versions do both and so does my studio. They also are no the same price of music so how can you compare them??
It is not they are pretty much two different dances in the nutcracker like in the nyc ballet’s nutcracker they do both marzipan and mother ginger a lot of studios I think usually leave one out. They also have to different pieces of music and when you watch the two dances they are very different. They are both brilliant pieces though! Hope this helped but if this did not make sense I recommend searching up nyc ballets marzipan and mother ginger to really see the difference! Sorry this was so long ❤️😭

To me, Sugar Plum should be white because it reminds me of the color of the sugar, so it makes more sense, like the Royal Ballet version.

It varies between companies with the name of Clara. In the original story by ETA Hoffman the girl is named Marie but the name was changed when the ballet was choreographed to better suit the image that Tchaikovsky wanted for the ballet

Guys isn’t marzipan and mother ginger two different things? I have seen many different versions do both and so does my studio. They also are no the same price of music so how can you compare them??
I’m not familiar with the part of mother ginger but is it not the same as the mirlitons/ reed flute dance?
It is not they are pretty much two different dances in the nutcracker like in the nyc ballet’s nutcracker they do both marzipan and mother ginger a lot of studios I think usually leave one out. They also have to different pieces of music and when you watch the two dances they are very different. They are both brilliant pieces though! Hope this helped but if this did not make sense I recommend searching up nyc ballets marzipan and mother ginger to really see the difference! Sorry this was so long ❤️😭

Marie is the original name of the little girl in the original fairytale. Tchaikovsky took name of Marie and change it to Clara to represent his vision yet the New York Ballet still uses the name Marie
