This is like my morning prayer and Lullaby while going to bed and all day along whenever need some positivity. Such a beautiful rendition, takes into another world immediately. Picturisation adds well to the raaga melody. Thanks for sharing such a gem from the legendary father son duo in collaboration with a legendary film maker.
We have to be grateful for our legacy as well as shyam benegal for having tried to preserve it through celluloid for posterity... It provides stability in the changing sands of time...
This is glory of Indian Classical Sangeet I will not call as Music its Sangeet. Please preserve this for generations to come. Please allow people to download so that it will get spread to grass route.
So great and full of symbolisms, as the singer who clean his body with water and clean his soul (and our souls) with song. And, in the video document, the view of different faiths to is a big humanist way for to show music have no limit. Bravo.
Deshpande in the book 'Guna Gaaien Awadi' has an anecdotal entry among several others. The special eyes of a Benegal led him to make a mirror image visual almost like a Jugal Bandi on the extraordinary simplicity of Malikaarjun Mansur : only his son Pt.Rajsekhar Mansur enacts the musical piece. Listen to the sparse introduction and immediately get immersed into the quotidian.Simple sights of daily chores. Common faces.People going about with their ordinary lives from waking to the many places of worship, parks, the colored delights in the green grocer's display of wares, the sparkle in the urchins jumping and the beginning of another days work in a random shop. Very working class. That is where the master got his inspiration from, the famed Director seems to be saying.Right in the heart of indiscriminate and frustrating noise of a chawl or a chattering Bazaar. Joy resides here in these unsuspecting recesses.Mansur ends up making music ! Hear it.Tell me if you were surprised. Shastriya Sangeet for you...
Waves lashing on marine drive.. the chawls of tardeo (?) Shyam Benegal as Pt. Mansur ! :) I wish he could also do a movie in Dharwad, Pt.Mansur's native. More episodes ! Thanks, excellent contributiuon !
Listened to this countless times..so sonorous and such deep hypnotic rendition...wish could listen to the master himself..singing it. i am a novice to hindustani dhrupad music and love it. do u have anything on pt. shivu taralagatti (sitar) a deciple of panditji? in any case a whole lotta love for the post..

I did not see any mention of Shyam Benegal as the actor. He was a great director who made this documentary. You are right that Rajshekar Mansur has played the role of his father. He does have striking resemblance to Mr Benegal though 😊
Amazing and inspiing Video. A must to be kept in the musical archives of India as Pt. Mallikarjun Mansur was a national treasure and one of the truly greatest Hindustani musicians . Could someone familiar with Ragas tell me which is the raga (seems like Raga Nand) that Rajasekhar Mansur sings while taking bath?
Shyam Benegal the great director, was the maker of the documentary. Nowhere it says that he plays the role. You are right, it is Rajshekar Mansur who has played his father’s role
PuLa Deshpnade in his book "Guna Gaieen Awadi", mentions this episode regarding Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur. I was amazed to see this here, at the same time not surprised, knowing now it came from genious of Shyam Benegal.
@abhayraje1 come on, then why do u say: indian classical? why not shastriya sangeet? that's how it is called. if u want to say in english, say it indian classical music. :D
@000shankar, you may not care for the music but there are lots of people who get pissed off with your communal mind-set. This mindset is so blinding that it is not even allowing you to see the subject matter of this video. Boss this is about Pt. Mansoor, his music at the backdrop of diversity-rich Mumbai. This is not a video enumerating various castes and communities. If you don't care for music, nobody cares for it here, but at least don't disturb others musical bliss.
Not a bad music video, but it gives hardly any information about Mallikarjun. Compare, for example, the 1000x better documentaries on well known musicians by the Films Division of India.
