This song has so much memories behind it for me. Captain harlock was one of the first ever animes I watched as a kid, and I'm part of the later generations (between millenials and genZ, i'm from 2006.) My mother is a fan of Captain hadock and we have a good part of it, so i heard this song so much over the years as a child watching that show. Learned what an Ocarina was before even knowing the existence of zelda games, and in a way, gave me my passion for music.
Mankind is as sad as this music: Billions of fools liking crappy tunes like "Despacito" against 22 likes on one of the most beautiful and moving songs in Anime history and 65 people who understand what real music is. Thank you for sharing this intensely emotional and tender melody.
The ideology of Captain Harlock was something that really stuck with me; The idea of being able to truly belong somewhere and be happy because of it, while defending others, even if you disagree with them. In the end, he fought not just for honor, the Arcadia, his friends, but rather the whole world, and yet, in such a selfless manner. I have nothing but high praises for Matsumoto's work and wishes that his soul is resting peacefully.
RIP, Leiji Matsumoto. You are now one with the Sea of Stars. Thank you for crafting so many wonderful stories and creating so many amazing characters. You will be missed.
I've read somewhere (as in, Tvtropes) that Leiji didn't like Mayu one bit. She's an anime-only character, the daughter of Tochiro, and the catalyst of Harlock's love for humanity regardless of its unrequitedness from the Earth government. I think Matsumoto thinks that Harlock finds good in all people regardless of who they are and ONE SINGULAR GIRL shouldn't be the main reason as to why he's defending the Earth. Narratively speaking though, Mayu makes perfect sense, but I completely get where Leiji is coming from.
But yet…..Harlock looks after her just like her dad did when he was alive, I guess Harlock is now the dad of Mayu, because Tochiro asked Harlock to take care of her when he died, so it would make perfect sense
I def. believe it, but for me it makes sense for Mayu to represent his love for humanity. Beyond his nature it's not easy to understand his love for humanity, but Mayu as a representation of the potential of beauty the human soul has makes it easier.

😔 Harlock was the first work from him I saw around the same time as I found out what anime was.
😢 i really cried for him, Harlock brought me such happy memories even in my most difficult times 😭

Mayu is a heart string tugging character. She is adorable.
