I totally agree! I think Emma Thompson is an actress of the caliber of Meryl Streep. She can play anyone in a fabulous way. Watch her in the movie "Wit" here on RUclips. A deep, long, almost two hour monologue. Superb acting, very touching!
Finally saw it today - such a great experience - funny, sad touching. Tom was great, but Emma, and especially Colin, were so amazing. The back story was so beautiful and heartfelt
The Oscars are.... Alan didn't get one, Leo waited decades and got one for a comparably weak performance.... In a year with 5 awesome movies only one gets one, had they been in other years, all would have one, and in weak years, movies and performances win that wouldn't even have been nominated in other years. The Oscars are not about a certain level of performance, about masterpieces, but rather about the best annually, and box offices.
Emma's empathy is boundless, it's heartbreaking watching her feel with Sherman in 14:52 Also you can see that the interview has been cut so some parts are missing. :(
I've seen this movie twice already. It's wonderful and it made me cry more than once! There was an old man sitting next to me during one viewing and he was actually sobbing (full on crying) during one scene. I have never seen Mary Poppins before so I just bought the Blu-ray and will watch it soon. Regardless, the music is SO famous so I recognized most of the tunes. One of the few films where the audience clapped when it finished.
It never occurred to me that anyone could think Emma got something wrong with playing Travers' inconsistency... to me that was plain to see that Travers was struggling with letting the change of hearts happen completely, that some situations enabled this empathy and lightness more, and then there was always a key moment, a trigger, that threw her back into her defensive mechanisms. It was so logical and natural, that's why I loved it and why I love Emma in this.
Did anyone else notice Emma's and Richard's hands around 9:40? So lovely... And yes, no question, the movie is absolutely brilliant, Emma's performance as PL Travers was perfect and she would have deserved an Oscar for the incredible work with facial expressions alone! What comforts me is that I don't think of her as the kind of actor that places a high value on any sort of award anyway, I believe what's important to her is that she brings joy through her work and that it encourages people to think about the deeper meanings behind movies like Saving Mr Banks - and that's definitely something she manages to achieve like no one else for me! So thank you for that, Emma!
I watched this movie today and I sort of wished I didn’t. Not because the movie was terrible, not at all. It is a GREAT movie. But I had no idea how much grief P.L Travers gave the Disney crew. I was trying to learn to love her and she just didn’t do it for me. I am sure she was a sweet woman to others during her lifetime but how she treated them and Walt at that was painful to watch. I command Walt and his employees for dealing with her, if it wasn’t for his persistence we wouldn’t have the wonderful movie which we all love and adore.
This was terrific. Funny I just drove into the Disney studio today. It's so corporate and just office space with a few buildings they film stuff. They don't do tours but if you buy enough Disney store stuff you can earn points that may get you a visitors day pass.
They’re 14th cousins four times removed. That said, 14th cousins is pretty darned far apart. There are probably at number of commenters in this thread who are 14th cousins to Walt Disney. On another note, Tom Hanks is also distantly related to Fred Rogers, another person he portrayed. And he’s also related to Abraham Lincoln.
I'll never forget how this film was so overlooked and sabotaged by the academy. Even Meryl Streep sabotaging Emma's performance because she was fearing it would damage her award season.
The movie captured the nostalgia and time periods very well. It is well written, and the shifting of time periods was effective. My only gripe is that I don't think Tom Hanks was well cast. He is a great actor but he has no resemblance to Walt Disney in appearance and persona. It should have been that actor from The Artist.
Bye, Mary Poppins. I want you to know that I do not want you stay away too long. It means that I want you to watch over Admiral Boom and it means that I want you to me draw pictures by pencil.
From what everyone says about the movie who has seen it before the public has... collin farrel is in it more than Tom Hanks and has more lines... yet he barely spoke in this interview and he is NEVER in the trailer. I wonder why?
aagold76 Excatly! Jacob Woodring I hear you, except Tom Hanks is like the biggest movie star, considered as a better actor and the movie builds around Thompson's and Hanks' characters + I do think Colin speaks quite frequently...? Anyways...
Jacob Woodring Because they're trying to sell it based on brand recognition. EVERYBODY knows who Walt Disney is. NOT everybody knows who PL Travers' alcoholic father from Australia is.
Saving Mr. Banks deserved more Oscar nominations, Emma Thompson was unjustly overlooked by the academy awards.
So was Colin Farrell. He was amazing in this.
Emma Thompson acting was amazing in this movie, great injustice....

Emma Thompson should have definitely received an Oscar her performance was outstanding
could not agree more ! Totally overlooked
Collin played such a weak broken man and endearing father. He broke my heart
Everyone was so amazing in this movie but Colin Farrell was whole another league. He was spectacular
This movie was robbed by the Academy in so many ways....especially Emma Thompson's performance. Total injustice.
Finally saw it today - such a great experience - funny, sad touching. Tom was great, but Emma, and especially Colin, were so amazing. The back story was so beautiful and heartfelt
I absolutely loved this movie. The fact that Emma didn't receive an Oscar nomination for this is complete and utter bullshit.

I thought Tom Hanks was even better! 🥰
*offtopic* I think Emma Thompson deserve an oscar nomination for Saving Mr. Banks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The backstory of this is my favourite piece of the film. So beautiful and heartfelt and sad. Such an underrated picture

Saving Mr. Banks was absolutely enjoyable. All of the actors gave brilliant performances.

Emma is amazing, but so is Colin... his character had me in tears

She should have won the oscar
Emma Thompson acting was amazing in this movie, great injustice has not been nominated for Academy Awards.
I understand Meryl Streep totally agreed and told Emma that she also believed Emma should've been nominated.
Saw it last night,,surprised just how much I loved it ,,,very emotional 😭
The Sherman brothers = legends.
He is so great in this interview x
If Emma was nominated, it would definitely've been a tight race between her and Cate Blanchett.
MediaLover194 Cate was awesome tho, she deserved the win!
Tom Hanks portraying Walt Disney describing to Travers his childhood growing up in Kansas City was a masterclass.
Her hair is so wonderful🤯😍
Tom Hanks and Richard Sherman in the same video? Is that the sound of the universe imploding on itself?
Great interviewer. Great questions. Not one "What was it like working with ______? Refreshing...
Hope tom hanks win oscar this year he has two great movies ready for nomination
He wasn't nominated once.
The scene where she signs the book and the names on the list made me want to see this movie
Great movie....John Hancock is a very underrated director.

How could tom not get any oscar nominations!!??!?!
great movie!
Being a Disney Kid myself i cannot wait to watch this movie... #academyfans #sendmetotheoscars
Richard M. Sherman is Mel Brooks?
Tom Hanks is actually distantly related to Walt Disney.
Douglas Roth how?

What do you mean by "Meryl Streep sabotaging Emma's performance"?
Rich's 2nd story at 14:12
Tom's Office story at 9:39
This is good
Rich's 1st story at 1:20
Why did Emma not get nominated?crazy

What!? Emma Thompson is the star of the movie and she speaks once in this video???
and Emma is ALWAYS a great interview- always funny- waste to have her there for 1 question.

yes- but Colin Farrell is a huge selling point- I'd rather see his films than Hanks :)
I found the character of Pamela simply horrid, the way she spoke to people was terrible and pompous
The flashback scenes added nothing to the movie. When they would start, I would just tune out until the present day scenes returned.
Personally I found that they helped me understand why she had created Mary Poppins and why she was so damaged.
