I just listened to Small Things Like These on Audiobook because of your recommendation. Gosh, what a great story! So heartwarming. I love Claire’s writing. It definitely leaves me wanting more, but in the same sense, it’s a perfect glimpse into a story of that time in Ireland history. ❤
So glad you liked it! Now you definitely have to read Foster. I think it’s her best work to date and it packs an even bigger emotional punch. It’s nice and short, too.
Loving your winter sweater ❄️ Ah I just knew you were gonna say Ethan Frome Gretchen!! That was such a powerful one for me also. I absolutely loved it, as heartbreaking as it was. I read it in the middle of summer during a British heatwave! 🙈 So many great recommendations, thank you 🙏🏻 It's a travesty I've never read Little Women, thanks for the reminder. So good to hear you loved Foster, I'm so keen to check that out along with so many others you mentioned here. A very Happy Birthday from a fellow November Birthday sharer. Oh and yes all the feels for Anna Karenina and Levin 💜😍
Thanks, Selina! I love digging out my winter clothes. I am so glad you enjoyed Ethan Frome, too! I once told someone it’s one of my favorite books and they asked me if I was okay and suggested I see a therapist. 😂🤣😂
Happy Birthday, Gretchen! What a wonderful bunch of recommendations! I hadn’t thought about Dr Zhivago. Anna Karenina I’m excited about starting on Jan 1 for the first time! Ooh Ethan Frome. Good one! I also keep wanting to get to Snow Child. Maybe I’ll try a that out in Jan.
Thanks! You will love Anna Karenina! I am going to be starting Middlemarch tomorrow. I’m going to follow the original serialized release schedule from December 1st, 1871 so it will take me a while to get through it. We are such privileged readers to be able to pick up these great classics and read them straight through. You’ll have to keep me posted about your Anna Karenina journey!
Greetings from 🏴🏴🏴Scotland, I have just recently found your channel and enjoy it immensely. I can't quite believe I own or have read every book you mentioned except for The Prospectors - which I have just ordered! Obviously we have very similar taste in books! Merry Christmas 🤶🎅🤶🎅
Thanks! I haven’t read Antarctica yet, but it’s the pick for Eric Karl Anderson’s Patreon book club this month. Really looking forward to it. I loved her other short story collection, Walk the Blue Fields, so I am fairly certain I will enjoy Antarctica, too.
Happy birthday, Gretchen! 🎂🎉🎁📚. Maybe this will be the year I finish Anna Karenina. Reminds me that I have another unfinished book with winter in the title.
Hi Gretchen! Thank you for these recommendations. I've read (via audio) and enjoyed two so far: 1) The Snow Child was an enchanting book with wonderful characters. 2) Migrations was adventurous and unpredictable. Because of you're wonderful channel, I've started a Book List/Journal to keep track of recommendations, especially from you. Many congrats on your channel. 🌺
Good to hear from you again! I’m happy you enjoyed some of the books I talked about. I recently finished Migrations and enjoyed it a lot. I still have to read The Snow Child (along with Snow Falling on Cedars) from my winter TBR and I’m glad you enjoyed it. It sounds right up my alley.
She’s a master of the novella and short stories. I’m perfectly happy with her writing shorter works but I wonder if she will ever release a long form novel 🤔
My birthday (August 30) is always my official start of fall. It's so close to Labor Day/first day of school, so it works that way. I'm definitely going to read Small Things Like These - I'm been a fan of Claire Keegan since I ordered Walk the Blue Fields from the UK years ago. Also - Antarctica, which is Eric's choice for December I think. I also have Ice Road by Gillian Slovo, which has been on my self for years that might warrant a read this winter. :)
I love that you have a similar season logic!!! Makes total sense to me, too! I read Walk the Blue Fields earlier this year and I enjoyed it a lot. And I’m so excited this months pick is Antarctica. I bought it earlier this year and was going to read it anyway but so glad I have a great group of readers to talk about it with.
Happy Birthday Gretchen from another Claire Keegan fan. I’m also planning to start Antarctica soon and will probably reread Small Things Like These in the lead up to 🎄
Happy Birthday!! I am throwing in a recommendation for Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher 💙📕. I love Claire Keegan and have read most of her books including the two novellas you mentioned.
Happy Birthday Gretchen! Mine was the 22nd Very anxious to hear your thoughts on Snow Falling on Cedars! One of my very favorite books. I still think of it from time to time & I read it when it was new. If I may recommend some cold weather novels that I’ve enjoyed… The People’s Act of Love, by James Meek. This is somewhat complex as I recall, and set in Siberia Disappearing Earth, by Julia Phillips. Also set in Russia, but begins in Summer Smilla’s Sense of Snow is one I haven’t read, but the synopsis sounds great. The author is Peter Hoeg. I believe it won the Edgar award.
Happy birthday! I remember really enjoying Ethan Frome.
Thanks, Eric! It’s so good! It’s such a stark and depressing read but I love it so much!

We need her write more books!!!!
Happy birthday! I love your channel 💖 so far your recommendations have all been hits for me 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I’m so glad to hear that! I always worry if people will like the books I recommend! I would hate to put a reader through a book they hated. Lol!
Happy Birthday! I have a November birthday too. Ethan Frome is one I've wanted to read for awhile. I may try to get to it in January.
Happy Belated Birthday!

@@madeubook , oh I will. What a fun way to read Middlemarch! When I read it this Summer, it was my first George Eliot. What fun.
Snow Falling On Cedars is amazing.
So many people have told me that! I haven’t seen the movie either so I am going in blind but I’m very much looking forward to it.

Happy Birthday Gretchen! 🎁🎂🎈🎊🎁🎂🎈🎊 great recommendations and reviews! 🙂 I've only read Anna Karenina many years ago.
Thank you! Anna Karenina was an investment of time, but I’m so glad I revisited it later in my life.
I am consistently blown away by Claire Keegan. Such sparse, impactful writing. Happy birthday!

Oh thank you! Winter Solstice came up a lot when I was researching winter books. I put it on my TBR so hopefully I can get to that one too.
