Dear Courtney, Operating department practitioners (ODPs) work as part of the operating department team. To become an operating department practitioner, you must undertake an approved ‘pre-registration’ programme of study which leads to registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Degrees and Diplomas of Higher Education (DipHE) are available, taking between 2 and 3 years full time. Part time courses may be available to those employed in related roles in the NHS, and employees would need to speak to their employer about possible opportunities. There are no nationally set minimum academic requirements for entry to degree or DipHE courses. However, as a guide, candidates will typically need 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C and a minimum of two A Levels, or equivalent qualifications. Applicants need to check exact entry requirements with universities offering the pre-registration courses. You can search for universities offering approved courses in operating department practice using the Health Careers course finder: www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/courses Funding from the NHS is currently available for eligible students on operating department practice courses. It includes full payment of tuition fees, a means-tested bursary (calculated on your financial situation), a £1000 grant and the option to apply fora student loan. For details, please visit the NHS Student Bursaries website at: www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/students You can read more about careers in operating department practice on our website: www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/explore-roles/operating-department-practice However it may also be a good idea to speak to your HR dept or manager as there may be some local provision or help. Best wishes The Health Careers Team

Health Careers Hi there. This is absolutely not so. The Registered ODP is trained to and undertakes the scrub and circulating role as well as that of the Recovery Practitioner. In many hospitals now, ODPs make up the majority of the Registered workforce and hold senior positions at Band 6 and 7. Many thanks. John- Senior Lecturer- Operating Department Practice Education.
Hi John, Apologies, it looks like we’ve misinterpreted your question. The aim of this particular video is to support the ‘Patient journey’ resources for schools and colleges which are available on our website, and as such, is meant to provide an overview of the role for this target audience. You’re right; ODPs undertake the scrub and circulating role as part of their working life. We’ve highlighted what the role involves and the strong skillset required by operating department practitioners on our ODP role page here bit.ly/1M2MyRS This includes information about progression into senior positions e.g. management, education, research, and advanced practice such as surgical care practitioners. Once again may we apologise for inaccuracy in our initial response. Kind regards, The Health Careers team
Hi Mr Smith, Thanks for getting in touch. We made an error in our first response which we corrected in the reply above, to reiterate that ODPs do undertake the scrub and circulating role as part of their duties. More information on ODPs can be found on our website at bit.ly/2fURNuc We hope this helps to clarify. Kind regards, The Health Careers Team
