    15:25 is the kind of the live TV moment that made me really start to love this show. Steve was so sure Arlene's "no" on water meant land was a given, so his shock when he also got a "no" is hilarious. Many years after this show was aired, Jack Benny was asked about how he felt about growing older. Benny said, "Mark Twain once said--not to me--"Age is a matter of mind. A partial obituary of Linda Louise Earnhardt Lawson ... She passed away on November 28, 2020, in Raleigh, NC. Everyone has one natural mother - Linda was the epitome of what it means to be a tender, kind, and loving mother to her two sons. Linda was an accomplished artist in the kitchen, on canvas, and in life. She did all things with pose and grace. Her gentle touch was remarkable when she worked on her art - while sitting at her painting table in the natural light - which is how those closest will remember her. Linda showed her love through her art; most notably her religious icon paintings. It was no surprise for those who knew her that she was an acrobatic wing walker in her early years because she was always daring and fearless. Linda has left an indelible mark on those who knew her, especially her family members and her sons.

    The last contestant's job (designing breadboxes) wasn't lost on avid "What's My Line?" fans of that time; One of Steve Allen's favorite questions about products was "Is it bigger than a breadbox?", and of course, Daly chose Allen go first, hoping that he'd ask that question.

    In case you were wondering why Bennett Cerf makes such a big deal in his introduction about "confirming" John Daly as the moderator, this June 21, 1959 episode followed just two days after a historic confirmation battle in the U.S. Senate.The Senate's own history site discusses:
    "On June 19, 1959, by a dramatic 46-to-49 roll-call vote, the Senate rejected President Dwight Eisenhower's nomination of Admiral Lewis Strauss to be secretary of commerce. Strauss was a seasoned administrator who expected quick approval to this essentially noncontroversial post...however, he had accumulated powerful enemies as the outspoken head of a regulatory commission."
    The site goes on to recount how the Democrats had won the midterm elections and were itching for a confrontation with Eisenhower. Strauss would be one of only three cabinet appointments rejected by the Senate in the twentieth century.

    • @steveburrus9347
      @steveburrus9347 7 лет назад +1

      Well if yoiu know, who WAS finally confirmed as Eisenhower's Sec. of Commerce? And who were the other 2 Cabinet rejectees?

    • @loissimmons6558
      @loissimmons6558 6 лет назад +3

      Frederick Mueller was confirmed as Secretary of Commerce on August 10, 1959 after serving as acting Secretary starting on June 30. Strauss had been serving as acting Secretary from Nov. 13, 1958 until June 30.
      Mueller was a native of Michigan who graduated from Michigan State with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and then went into his family's business. He had served in various posts in the Commerce Department starting in 1956.
      The other two Cabinet nominees who were rejected by the Senate in the 20th century were Charles Warren who was unsuccessfully nominated by President Coolidge twice to become the Attorney General, and John Tower who had been nominated by President George H.W. Bush to become Secretary of Defense.
      An interesting side note on Warren: the first time he was nominated, the initial vote was deadlocked at 40-40. But Vice President Dawes arrived too late to cast the tie-breaking vote as is one of the Constitutional powers of the office of Vice President. By the time he arrived, a Senator switched his vote from Yes to No. In essence, Warren was denied becoming Attorney General because of tardiness.

    RE: Jack Benny's socking John Daly on live TV. So far as I can remember, Benny was the only mystery guest to lay a hand on Daly.
    The other day, I happened across my personal copy of that memorable 1966 WML episode in which Jack Benny appeared under his birth name and was listed as a "concert violinist." Benny socked him AGAIN, hard. We hear stories that Benny in real life was such a nice guy -- but this does not seem terribly nice.

    • @WhatsMyLine
      @WhatsMyLine  10 лет назад +21

      I'm a huge, lifelong fan of Jack Benny, so feel free to dismiss me on those grounds, but I'm not exaggerating when I say that Benny was a universally beloved man in real life. Like Harpo Marx, he was genuinely well liked by everyone whose path he ever crossed. You can't find an unkind word said about either of them anywhere.
      Jack was just being playful here. I haven't seen that 1966 show yet, but again, it's just impossible for me to believe that it plays out as you're describing here. Certainly, I wouldn't take whatever comic business he was engaging in, even if it comes across distastefully, as any indication of what kind of a man he was.

    • @ryanschroer
      @ryanschroer 10 лет назад +11

      Allow me to explain about Benny...I'm a huge fan..despite my youth. Unlike so many actors and comics, he appeared on WML in complete character. His character in radio and TV was beloved because it was so transparent. He thought himself a romantic type on the radio and television who was merely frugal. His regular cast poked fun at him a lot..that was part of his popularity. He was trying so hard to be what everyone knew he wasn't..like the kiss with Jane Meadows. So, that's why he socked Daly playfully. Daly knew those questions would get those reactions, so he was laughing hard because Jack was acting, doing his radio/TV persona.

    • @jvcomedy

      Jack Benny slapping John Daly on the shoulder was obviously done all in good fun here. They both got a big laugh about it after he did it. Jack Benny was beloved by all..........his wife........not so much.

      +penske369 Seems as if it's far-back cousins, if anything; Dale Jr's grandfather was the only male out of five children, and Dale Sr. was born in 1951 (and didn't have Lynda as a sister). Also, of course, Dale's family is from Kannapolis, which is 60 miles or so from Kernersville. (Which isn't indicative of anything, in and of itself. Just a factor.)

      +Doug Mangum interesting; I wish I had that formula that calculated that. If you're referring to the Confederate 1000 bill I wish he would've revealed which state it was from; all of my Confederate money lists the state like Mississippi, Louisiana etc... each Conf state printed its own - some were quite artistic. I believe Miss.'s is the most prolific and GRRRR I can't remember the rarest one..... Maryland? No.... they only WANTED to be Confederate but never actually were.......Virginia.... maybe... OHHHH I'm sorry I brought this up now I'm going to think about that until I look it up lol

    • @greydogmusic
      @greydogmusic 6 лет назад

      Just in case someone reads the 2 year old comment above. This info can be found on multiple sites. I will refrence coinsite here. They only printed 607 $1000 bills. No date on the article. Says the value range is $3,500 - $35,000. The latter price for a uncirculated note. It says there are no Gem CU exist which would bring “multiples of that price”. It says “Confederate States of America” on it.
      So there is no state to reveal as it is a Confederate States note. Individual States as well as Banks also issued money. Money printed by Banks and States may or may not be accepted elsewhere than where it was printed to use.

    This is another example of Arlene speaking out of turn and blurting out her suspicions when it is not her turn. During the first contestant's segment, she blurted out "Confederate money", and even though Steve Allen did not take her cue, she spoiled the game. She is frequently guilty of this.
