when I was a kid I used to fly the N64 controller as though it was a space ship(imagination); and the rumble pack was like a cool device connecting to the spaceship in mid space for enhanced space travel. I mean the controller reminds me of the X wing from Star Wars!
The Gamecube is probably still my favorite. It's mainly because of the shape. It's the perfect size and contour to wrap your hands around. It's only real shortcomings are the right hand buttons, I would have preferred it if they'd returned to the SNES layout.
The Model 2 Saturn controller is my favorite controller ever. The directional pad is the best d-pad I've ever used, and the buttons were extremely responsive and comfortable. It's a perfect gamers controller.
The PS2 controller, without a doubt. It had everything where it needed to be, the shape was perfect, and the heft it had made it feel like a true, not hollow, controller. Also, the texturing of the joysticks was a very good touch.
My favorite was the Sega Saturn controller. It is great for side scrollers and has no comparison as far as fighters go. It's only drawback is only two triggers as opposed to four, but having the six button layout is a way better trade off, especially with fighters.
my favorite controller of all time is "The Duke"!!! My hands are huge and the PS controllers feel like a toy in my hands. The 360 is ok, but man i miss "The Duke".
My favourite controller is probably the Dualshock 2. The Dualshock 3 is great, but I like a bit of heft to my controller. The Gamecube controller being a close second.
I honestly love any and every Dualshock there is :) However, the 4 did feel a tiny bit strange when I first picked it up (3 as well) But I still love the simple, symmetrical, perfect design that the Dualshock offers
NinjaLB8 I agree, I just grew accustomed to it. Picking up a 4 then a 3 feels awkward. Two was by far the greatest when it came to weight and durability I swear my duelshock 2 would still work after a burst of rage lol you know what I mean...
I definitely know what you mean haha; I miss both of my PS2s, I had a Slim and a Biggy but randomly neither will play games, but they do startup and my PS3 can't play PS2 titles either. Why can't we just have some good ol' fashioned backwards compatibility when we need it, especially for my shelf full of games
The SNES controller was one of my faves for years, and the design was used for future designs of the better systems' controllers, IMO. Quick note: you forgot to mention the 3DO's addition of a headphone jack in the controller which set that apart, and there was no talk about the change from ABYX buttons to PSX's circle, square, triangle, x buttons. That always boggled my mind and made gaming so confusing at the time, for me.
On the subject of the Playstation consoles using Circle, Square, Triangle and X buttons, my theory is that Nintendo had already sued Sony for using the name "Play Station" which we all know became PlayStation (yes, they literally just squished them together haha) so Sony probably figured not to use the ABXY configuration since the controller already looked so similar to the SNES one (you have to remember, the original PS controller did not have analog sticks and that the SNES and PS controller were basically the same, except the PS controller had the handles and two extra LR buttons.)
Genesis and Gamecube. The buttons and d-pad of the genesis are just so perfect, and the gamecube just fits so perfectly in your hand and the triggers on them feel amazing.
I'd have to say the 360 controller. Apparently, Microsoft dumped a lot of money into a team of very high-level ergonomics specialists to design it, and it definitely paid off.
My favourite, Sony Playstation original analog controller, not the Dualshock, but the one before that with longer handles and not rubber mushroom sticks the one with caved sticks. But overall Dualshock is my favourite now days, I prefer it over 360 controller, because of better d-pad and symmetrical positioning of sticks, I'm so used to it and it's more comfortable to my thumbs. I just hope DS4 is great too, I believe it's going to be.
The N64 controller doesn't get enough respect. Maybe it's the nostalgia taking over me but no matter, I LOVE THE NINTENDO 64 CONTROLLER. The memories of playing Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Super Smash Bros., and much more. Some people don't like the way(s) it's held, but just get used to it and you'll love the heck out of it soon enough. LONG LIVE THE NINTENDO 64!!
Nintendo 64 controller! Just felt so beautiful in the hands, and the control stick and z trigger were brilliantly implemented. The A, B, R, and Z buttons were the core buttons and the ingenious design meant hardly any finger/thumb movement was needed, which is absolutely what you want when playing a game. It was an evolution in controller design at the time and is still to be bested i.m.o.
+Zorgo definitely not the Dual Shock 3, those L2 & R2 trigger/push sensitive buttons felt awkward and awful to use. While I like the gamecube controller, it' micro sized d-pad was a complete joke, but I guess it didn't matter considering 99% of GCN game were 3D anyways. My favorite? I absolutely love the Wii U game pad, NES controller, The Wii remote which btw turned side ways turns into an NES controller andddddd probably the original non-dualshock PS1 controller....Never been a fan of the Dualshock's loose slippery feeling cheap sticks. Sony finally got it right by making the DS4's sticks tighter and sturdier that's for sure. Saturn controller was pretty cool too!
+Donatello97 Speaking of the Dualshock 4 (although I love all the Dualshocks and the PS1 controller without analog sticks and the classic controller pro for the Wii) it's my favorite,
I really like the Sega Saturn controllers too. Oh and the Dreamcast controllers are nice. Wii U controllers are extremely comfortable and has a screen, so that's awesome. Not a fan of the Wii controller though. The concept sounded cool, but whenever you tried to play RPGs on Wii, it was very weird to say the least.
"whenever you tried to play RPGs on Wii, it was very weird to say the least." The Wii only had a handful of retail games that qualify as RPG's. Most are VC games which the Classic Controller was made to play, although for certain consoles(NES, Master System, TurboGrafx-16) you can just play with the remote horizontally to simulate those particular controllers. As for the aforementioned handful of retail Wii RPG's, almost all of them can be played with either the Classic Controller or Gamecube controller, so it doesn't have to feel weird.
JMFSpike Ya I suppose that was a stupid comment I made. Lol. Most RPGs on Wii use the classic controller anyway. The Wii controller works for RPGs, but it's a little strange having motion controls in certain games like Twilight Princess. Even stranger is the fact that the motion controls worked.
Matt Gamingcomicsanimation It wasn't a stupid comment, it just slipped your mind that you can also use those other controllers. Yeah, those motion controls were awful most of the time. They always worked great in Nintendo's own games, but not in too many others. Another problem was many games having motion controls tacked on when it was very unnecessary. De Blob is one example of that. You have to swing the Wii Remote upwards to jump. That is just stupid. Thankfully, they redeemed themselves when they made the sequel by assigning jump to the "A" button.
JMFSpike But now Nintendo is making the most amazing decisions with Wii U and NEW 3DS. Seriously the people who think the Wii U is a joke are just jealous they don't have one. Nintendo's really dishing it out this year with a bevy of fantastic exclusives. The only think Nintendo severely struggles with is naming their hardware. The average person still might think the Wii U is just a controller for Wii and think the NEW 3DS literally means it's a regualr model in NEW condition. Lol Nintendo would be doing so much better if they called Wii U some other name.
Matt Gamingcomicsanimation Yeah, I completely agree with you. Unless you're really big into FPS's, the Wii U is by *far* the best console of this generation so far. I've had a PS4 for over a year and have only used it about 4 times. There is nothing currently on it that I'm interested in playing. I'm almost certain that it will be great eventually, but right now it's nothing special. On the other hand, the Wii U has a whole bunch of games I'd like to play, probably well over 10 of them. Same story for the 3DS.
Hey guys love your shows! I'm AVGN fan and I like your shows are nostalgic specially evertime you share your past experiences, more power godbless rock on
+Gunner Wallace My problem with the Xbox ONE controller is it feels cramp. It's hard to explain really. Honestly I would have liked it better if they just took the 360 controller and gave it the Xbones D pad
+FirePrinceZuko 77 the new elite controller is great I have used it for a couple days now it's expensive in my opinion but it was worth it. and the controller is the same size as the old duke

For me it's the Sega Saturn 3D controller it just feels so comfortable in the hands and the analog stick feels so smooth to me and keeps me going back to my Saturn to this day and that ladies and gentlemen is my favorite controller.
my favorite controller is the 360 one because the triggers most accurately reproduce the feeling of pulling the trigger on a gun which works best for my favorite shooter games (such as call of duty)
A couple of odd (but awesome) controllers not mentioned were two Playstation controllers that really blew me aware for innovation. First was the ASCII Grip One Handed Controller (do an image search guys) which allowed you to play RPG's one handed while you had a coffee or smoke. I spent hours playing FFVII with that one! Secondly the Negcon controller from Namco for Ridge Racer. It was a fairly plain looking PSX controller at first till you realise that you twist the controller in half to steer left and right. Sounds so wrong but just felt perfect to allow tight controls around corners! Great video guys (as always) and keep 'em coming.
Dual shock. I think keeping the same design through four generations was a great idea. I couldn't play with anything else now. It just belongs in my hands.
The 360 controller is definitely my favorite. I like how the analog sticks are farther apart than the PlayStation controller. The Sony sticks are too close together in my opinion.
People love to hate on the Wii controller. Personally, I loved that it was different. After using basically the same controller for every system, it was nice to use something unique. Did some developers use the “motion” controls poorly? Sure. But I always find it pretty comfortable and it offered unique interfaces we haven’t seen since.
I'm a fan of the Wii U pro controller. I always liked the concept of the dualshock being symmetrical but I had trouble getting used to the stick placement, I hated the d-pad, and the handles were short and uncomfortable. The Wii U pro controller fixes all of these issues and is symmetrical and digital shoulder buttons are usually an advantage these days, especially in shooters.
My favorite one is probably the Xbox 360 gamepad, followed closely by the GameCube pad. The only thing I didn't like about the GameCube controller is the stiff d-pad. That's based on ergonomics, by the way. If it's nostalgia we're talking about, my favorite would be the (North American) SNES one.
I have to agree, I love the PS3 controller. People complain that they don't like the analogue sticks next to eachother and that it's too small, but I just love the design.
I like it a lot, it'd be my favorite if the R2 L2 triggers weren't that sensitive in some games (I remember casting magic accidentally a lot in God of War 3), so I'll go with the PS2 controller. Still, it is pretty nice to use the DS3 controller in a computer.
The Wii U Pro Controller and the SNES Controller are my favorites. The Wii U Pro Controller was perfect for 3D games and the SNES Controller was perfect for 2D games.
Regarding the Saturn's 3D controller that was included with NiGHTS, one of the more underappreciated features with that controller was the analog triggers. It doesn't get talked about too much, but it's really become a staple for controllers afterwards and is invaluable to racing games and the like. It gave us the ability to control the amount of throttle rather than just having "stop and go." My favorite controller of all time though is probably the Gamecube controller.
gosh i LOVED the N64 controller when it came oout, the gameplay with that was AWESOME, and then yes the gamecube controller took it to another level, it was just as legendary
The Saturn is probably my favorite for 2D games, it keeps the ergonomic kidney bean shape, has six buttons for fighting games and adds the shoulder button too.
My favorite is the Duke controller. I've been trying to find a way to put the insides of my 360 controller into a Duke controller housing to have that old school feel when I play Halo 4 or GTA V.
I've gotten used to my 360's...though I love the PS2/3. Also, the Genesis and Saturn, as well. And...I though I'd place the SNES at the bottom for button placement, it gets props for being so light and comfy.
the problem with the sega master system controller was that the pad was not as precise as the nes dpad. the entire dpad on the sms pad was a square and jointed. the jointed part removed the precision of only being able to press left instead of left and something else (as the sms dpad was jointed)
The Wavebird is my personal favorite, because I grew up with it in the days of the GameCube. And every game on the wii that it was possible to play with the gamecube controller, I used it.
My favorite was the NES Advantage, that made playing long RPG's so nice since you could just set it on your lap and your whole hand was free and made it so you got less cramps and raw fingers / sore fingers etc. The Gamecube controller was great too as so many others are as well. That NES Advantage though helped addict me to gaming so I have to give that my nod.
ps1/ps2 dualshock... I've been using a ps1 controller on PC for more than 13 years... the same controller... and it still goes... it's perfect for all kinds of gaming... cheers!
I never played the Saturn at the time, but have since bought 2 of the Retro-bit Saturn contrillers, both wired and wireless. I really love the controller, especially the d-pad.
It's a bit too early to say this, but my favorite controller has to be the DualShock 4 for the PlayStation 4. I've used it with my PC several times from Tomb Raider (2013) to Ys I Chronicles. The GameCube controller comes at a close second.
Though it was a pain to play Capcom Vs. SNK 2 with it, the Gamecube´s wavebird will always have a special place in my heart, but the dual shock family is my favourite; I can play any genre with just fine.
I love the Saturn and ps4. But for nostalgics sake I really loved the dreamcast but in hind site it's a little Roth around the edges lol. But my first was the super :). Hard to believe this is one of the first of your videos I watched back three years ago!
The Wii U Game pad, and that's because I've had hands on experience with tons of controllers from all sorts of consoles, for some reason I just love the Wii U's Game pad.
The original Xbox controller (yes the big one) always felt comfortable to me. I do play with my hands/controller sitting in my lap. I don't hold the controller up or move it around like some gamers so this controller fits best for a hands at rest state in your lap. I have a mad catz version that had a slightly better directional pad that actually made it my favorite (and yes the mad catz one was that large size as well).
It's lag in a sense that it takes you time to travel across the controller to press those buttons, try pressing fierce punch then jab and back and forth, it's more of a struggle than it should be. Also it's nearly impossible to press the whole row at the same time. Not so much with four face buttons.
I would make one that had lights for buttons. Like the color green lights up, meaning something, or letting you interact with green things or whatever else.
Not only is the WiiU gamepad incredibly comfortable (I think it has the best triggers on any controller), you can even use it to game on the toilet. The gaming never stops with the gamepad!
Super Nintendo is what introduced me to the Directional Pad. 9:19- Analog Sticks and vibration were new to me a the time. Tekken never supported the use of Analog yet. 11:37- I like DreamCast, but I wish there Controllers had 6 button face buttons like Genisis 6 button and Saturn Controllers. 12:18- I also like GameCube, but I wish Nintendo brought back the SELECT button after the N64.
Gamecube is my favorite. Specifically the Wavebird wireless controllers. They were so comfortable and at the time, the wireless function was amazing (too me at least).
As a kid I loved getting new controllers while my brother hated them. I used to say that a new controller was a fun part of a new console while he loved how Playstation stayed the same.
GameCube controller all day. I remember thinking it looked stupid and silly, then I played resident evil 4 and I was sold. It’s perfect in every way and super comfortable. GameCube isn’t my favorite system but does have my favorite controller
well the first iteration of it did, but I like it :). You can kinda see the evolution of that into the dreamcast. It's like they almost got it right with that circle thing, but went back to the genesis style for whatever reason, and then it evolved into the dreamcast which I think is a fantastic controller, especially for when it came out.
The thing that threw me off the most with the PS1 controller was the X, O, triangle and square buttons and having to know which one's to press for games like Parappa the Rapper where you need to be able to know what is what without looking down at the controller.
i've seen basically all your videos multiple times, love the content. Seeing the gamecube controller made me think, any chance of a gamecube vid at any point? My favorite console + controller (wavebird) of all time.
@Rob - the Duke didn't fail in Japan. They made the S Controller specifically for the Japanese market and never sold the Duke in Japan. They later also sold the S everywhere else, too.
I remember being pretty shocked the first time seeing the U.S SNES with that blocky design and purple buttons, what was up with that? :/ Why did they change it for the U.S? I always liked the PAL Super Nintendo design a lot more (which was identical to the Super Famicom).
It's funny how Rob's changed over the years and yet he's still as wacky and funny as he as 7 years ago. Many props to the both of them.
When Rob pulls out his controller pick Johnny looks like he's looking at someone off screen like "can he do this?"
I knew it was going to be similar to the OG NES, The clue was on his shirt.
My favorite in retro consoles is the snes pal controller
In current consoles it's the dualshock 4
me too my friend I mean the snes controller
is really comfortable.
The Gamecube controller has always been my personal favorite. With the Playstation's dualshock coming in a close second.
when I was a kid I used to fly the N64 controller as though it was a space ship(imagination); and the rumble pack was like a cool device connecting to the spaceship in mid space for enhanced space travel. I mean the controller reminds me of the X wing from Star Wars!
+babloo1666 You were an awesome kid lol
The Gamecube is probably still my favorite.
It's mainly because of the shape. It's the perfect size and contour to wrap your hands around. It's only real shortcomings are the right hand buttons, I would have preferred it if they'd returned to the SNES layout.
To each his own.
I don't play fighting games, so it's a non-issue for me.
Kawayolnyo still not as bad as the Xbox 360 "D-pad"
The Model 2 Saturn controller is my favorite controller ever. The directional pad is the best d-pad I've ever used, and the buttons were extremely responsive and comfortable. It's a perfect gamers controller.
The PS2 controller, without a doubt.

Gamecube, without question.
GamingWithADog yessss!!!!
Gamecube without any doubt!!!!
Gamecube was shit!
Sticky clucky buttons.
Lmao
"The Controller-Squid Strikes" it should be a new horror-action movie.
the original saturn controller for me was the best control until analog was introduced and then is have to go with the Xbox control
My favorite controller will always be the SNES controller.
my favorite controller of all time is "The Duke"!!!
Farmeryeti Exact same here! :)
Have you tried the duelshock 4 it's amazing the back grip feels so perfect, in my opinion that is...
I honestly love any and every Dualshock there is :) However, the 4 did feel a tiny bit strange when I first picked it up (3 as well) But I still love the simple, symmetrical, perfect design that the Dualshock offers

I always thought the original NA Saturn controller was kind of badass looking.

It's cross, not X.
The best controller by far is the PS4.
My personal favorite is the Sega Genesis controller for pure nostalgia.
I agree
Genesis and Gamecube. The buttons and d-pad of the genesis are just so perfect, and the gamecube just fits so perfectly in your hand and the triggers on them feel amazing.
I'd have to say the 360 controller. Apparently, Microsoft dumped a lot of money into a team of very high-level ergonomics specialists to design it, and it definitely paid off.

wiimote + nunchuck doesn't get enough respect. you can really get your lean on while using it.
The most novel and distinctive games use the wiimote and nunchuck. On rails shooters were best on the Wii/Wii U.
The N64 controller doesn't get enough respect. Maybe it's the nostalgia taking over me but no matter, I LOVE THE NINTENDO 64 CONTROLLER. Xbox 360 controller. All time best IMO
Worst is Wii controller. the 1 conroller that turned me off the console all together :(
snes controler
That controller revoltionized game controllers and was the template for Playstation series controllers.
Really ps3 was a downgrade from ps2 to the horrible triggers
I like the ps3 triggers being pressure sensitive. They also didn't get broken as much.
Dave Hobbs but they were stiff as fuck and the way the triggers went down made you're fingers slip why you think shooters burly used them
Fair point, to each their own. I didn't have any issues with it for shooting and racing.
Dave Hobbs I played both xbox and playstation and they changed them for the ds4 because the xbox 360 triggers made a fool of them
I still prefer playstation controllers. Mostly because the dpad for xbox controllers is garbage
Sega saturn

People love to hate on the Wii controller. Personally, I loved that it was different. After using basically the same controller for every system, it was nice to use something unique. Did some developers use the “motion” controls poorly? Sure. But I always find it pretty comfortable and it offered unique interfaces we haven’t seen since.
It was a breath of fresh air without a doubt.
I think the 360 and PS2/3/4 controllers are all pretty well tied for me. They all worked very well for the games I played with them.
Johnny's disdain for the wii controller is HILARIOUSly apparent, "it's interesting" lol
those cables wrapped up that way are a death sentence
The N64 controller used to cut the heck out of my thumb after long play sessions. That Joystick was kind of deadly.
I had one of those retrocon controllers. The buttons all lit up too, it was awesome until it broke.
Im actually also one of the few with that ascii controller for pso. Man that thing still is the pride of my controllers.
I have to say that the Neo Geo Arcade stick is my favorite at the moment, got a AES system a couple of days ago and just fell in love with it.
gosh i LOVED the N64 controller when it came oout, the gameplay with that was AWESOME, and then yes the gamecube controller took it to another level, it was just as legendary
My favorite is the PS4 controller because it makes the jigglies shake in DOAX3!
The American SNES controller has a longer cord than the Super Famicom. Just gotta switch the buttons.
My fav retro is the Master System one, really Industrial. Real fav 2 Quickshot in the 80's, and Neo Geo Controller.
My favorite Wii U Gamepad, everything at your hand. Camera, mic, speakers, 6 inches screen!!!
I loved the original Dual Analogue controller, with the extra long hand grips :D
I've been using a ps1 controller on PC for more than 13 years... the same controller... and it still goes... it's perfect for all kinds of gaming...
cheers!
I love the duke... not my favorite but top 3
older ones really love genesis 3 and 6 button. newer is 360/xbox one
I never played the Saturn at the time, but have since bought 2 of the Retro-bit Saturn contrillers, both wired and wireless. I really love the controller, especially the d-pad.
The Nights controller for Sega Saturn is my favorite. A big controller but very comfortable. The game was also fun.
It's a bit too early to say this, but my favorite controller has to be the DualShock 4 for the PlayStation 4. I've used it with my PC several times from Tomb Raider (2013) to Ys I Chronicles.
The GameCube controller comes at a close second.
Gamecube Wavebird, SNES Ascii pad, Wiimote/Nunchuk, TurboGrafx 16, and original Genesis are my favorites.
Definitely the GameCube controller. It fits in your hand *perfectly*
Very *nostalgic*
The Super Nintendo "Ascii Pad" controller
They fixed everything wrong with the layout and put colors back on the buttons.
A dream to play with.
Pork chop sammiches! Love those PSA spoofs...Body massage, body massage
My favorite controller is probably either the sega Saturn model 2 or 3D pad.. Or if it counts, the analogue interactive neo geo joystick.
It's lag in a sense that it takes you time to travel across the controller to press those buttons, try pressing fierce punch then jab and back and forth, it's more of a struggle than it should be. Also it's nearly impossible to press the whole row at the same time. Not so much with four face buttons.
My favorite would have to be the Nintendo 64 controller. It looks so awkward, but it's given me the most memories and it feels like home in my hands.
I would make one that had lights for buttons. Like the color green lights up, meaning something, or letting you interact with green things or whatever else.
Not only is the WiiU gamepad incredibly comfortable (I think it has the best triggers on any controller), you can even use it to game on the toilet. The gaming never stops with the gamepad!
yeah ive got a collection of them :) got black, resident evil 4 platinum, spice orange, pearl white and indigo
the gamecube controller was pure perfection. the nes controller is maybe the most iconic :)
Saturn digital controller. It's basically just a better version of the Genesis 6 button controller, and that controller is very good.
The 360 had the best feeling in my hands, but overall probably would give it to the Wavebird or Megadrive 3 button controller.
Wii Classic Pro Controller was my fav even though now it's a wiimote extension .
*NES > Wii > Arcade > SNES > WiiU Pro > XBoxOne (s) > Mouse & Keyboard*
My favorites were the NesMax, Snes controller, Dreamcast controller and Dualshock (any). Honorable Mention is the Horipad for the 360.
I remember being pretty shocked the first time seeing the U.S SNES with that blocky design and purple buttons, what was up with that? :/ Why did they change it for the U.S? I always liked the PAL Super Nintendo design a lot more (which was identical to the Super Famicom).
