  • Over the last two few decades, Canouan has been transformed as a tourism destination, with its new jet airport, marina, and resorts.
However, as with much of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, it seems that on this tiny Grenadines island, getting the small thing right is slow pickings…

These news reports are priceless. Many of us in the Caribbean don't know or even have a clue of the daily lives of the ordinary people in the other Caribbean islands... Bless from Jamaica....

A lot of potential in such a beautiful place in the world. If all the community gets together and does a major litter and recycling operation that is a start. Then replanting the native trees, flowers. The roads rebuilt, the wharf rebuilt for boats, yachts. The local markets and bars and bistros rebuilt with a colonial look yet totally modern inside for the benefits of the locals to enjoy as well as the tourists. There is so much that could be done but I truly think that these incentives and measures carried out is a fresh positive start for Canouans. All the best.

Did he really say the issue is not his problem because he works there? Our mindset needs to change with certain things.

Literally! Then they advertise the prospects of new jobs to us and we jump up and down celebrating while no real substantial change ever happens for us. Happens every time. Consequences of having a tourism- dependent economy.

this man understands the ecoonics. the arrangement only works for one side and the people of Saint Vincent do need to step there gsme up, as far as innovation.

My assessment of the situation: Bynoe is on point. The type of tourism in Canouan does not reach the locals because money circulates at the 10,000 ft level. Mass tourism on a small scale with affordable hotels and commercial flight will change economic the landscape somewhat--which is what the mainland is trying to do. So implementing mass tourism in Canouan put it in direct competition with the mainland. Which island will win? Mainland or Canouan?
