I *loved* this game when I was a kid. Played the demo when I was probably about 8 or so, and it terrified me. I was scared of that monster that jumps through the window - who I dubbed the 'chicken monster', probably due to its animations - to the point that my parents had to cover my window with an extra blind. Ended up getting the full game, and when I completed it - it was almost like vanquishing a childhood demon.
Actually fun fact, Resident Evil was originally meant to be a remake of a Famicom game called Sweet Home, which was a survival horror RPG based off of a japanese movie of the same name that most people regard as being even better than the movie. Like look it up it takes, LITERALLY everything from that game. I'll grant that it definitely took the fixed camera from this, but everything else was Sweet Home.
It reminds me of Castle Wolfenstein coming before Metal Gear 1. Both were stealth games, but I think it unlikely Brojima knew of CW (unless he's cited it as an influence at some point). Indeed, one of his main influences was The Great Escape. Similarities between the games are likely coincidental, a result of pulling from similar sources and the technology of the time.
Coraline Kozun Yea, but a Sweet Home remake would’ve been like Fatal Frame meets horror themed rpg combat since that’s what Sweet Home had. The Resident Evil we got took from Alone in the Dark in terms of play style, not so much the concept of survival horror.
Charlie McFarlin Another old game that holds up atmosphere wise is Clock Tower for the SNES. Played Doom 3 as a kid and it did nothing for me. Watched an LP of Clock Tower and found it far more unnerving.
nathan casarez I know about Clock Tower. It definitely has its moments of unnerving and fear, and it is interesting to see what was done with the limited technology. I have also seen the sequels. The series got kind of weird by the end.
nathan casarez SNES Clock Tower was amazing. The graphics were jaw dropping...comparable to some PC graphics at the time. It was everything a slasher movie turned video game should be. The PlayStation sequel was good too... if you ignored the voice acting and the intermissions. Actually, don't ignore the voice acting. Laugh at it. It's so beautifully bad! Not quite "Michigan: Report from Hell" level, but near Resident Evil levels.
I won't lie, the scariest thing in this game was...that frog at the beginning. It always startled me when I was a kid and I don't know why. But beside that, the scariest enemies were the ghost (especially the one near the the gramophone), but the rest never really bothered me that much
It's impressive for 1992. A leap in graphics, creating a new genre... But it still plays like a 3D game from 1992. Looking back, I miss my Camera Angles, Inventory Management, the gameplay choices (pushing the chest & shelf instead of fighting) and everything that modern Survival Horror has forgotten.
I can relate... but to be honest... i'm was a gigantic coward (plus...didn't speak english) when I was younger I was terrified of RE on the ps1(without understanding anything about it... meaning I only ever got as far as the 4th room or something) I would be terrified of alone in the dark too
***** same as me i couldn't play horror games since i was a coward too! the first horror game i finished was RE4 and even still i was shitting my pants everytime i heard "Detras de ti imbecil!" now i find this hillarious :D
akihiro kina the spanish in RE4 actually was always kinda hilarious to me, because I could actually understand it (not because I knew spanish, but because it's pretty close to portuguese) So I was never really scared playing it... until the regenerators... fuck those
Two Best Friends did a good job of it, but that was in part because Woolie already read the book and played the game so he knew everything, while letting Pat figure it out on his own and only gave him help when he got stuck.
The part where you started kicking the zombie in the dick and it zooms in, i just about died man. you are without a doubt one of my favorite youtubers out there
Getting knocked back into a door and the door actually getting knocked open is seriously impressive stuff for 1992, considering most games today treat doors as literally impenetrable.
For a game from 1992 this holds up way better than I would have expected, at least watching. It's cool to hear how much knowledge you have about the game, great commentary!
My family liked playing this game on our DOS computer. We all got stuck on not figuring out to put mirrors on the statues to get to the first floor. We were stuck for 15 years.
I believe Sweet Home (made by Capcom) was one of the first survival horror games that was released in Jp. When RE was being made it was originally going to be remake of Sweet Home but later the devs made into a original game.
Ay', I forgot to mention that I do know about Sweet Home being a movie first. I did watch it movie and it was kind of enjoyable. *cough* I did cried on scene though *cough*
No matter how hard I try, I can't fucking beat the Egypt level because of the puzzles, or the fucking level in London where you are chased down and trying to find Jack the Ripper. I either get killed by the mob, or killed by the constables in the streets. I can get past the Mines and the Graveyard levels just fine, but those two I can get it through my skull on how to beat those levels.
You knew it, and it was still hardcore comical. I remember playing the attic in a Mac Play demo disc oh so long ago. That, and some Frankenstein point and click adventure! Hilarious, keep up all these let's plays! A Link to the Past Randomized was just awesome. I have a lot of your backlog to go through!
This is one of those games which despite being so primitive still elicits a sense of fear... and I finished this game! One of the things that makes this game so scary is the seeming lack of control. Combat moves have a delay, camera angles are fixed... 4:23 It’s a demonic chicken! 24:06 you need to kill the knight with something VERY HEAVY. 26:03 Scrubbing bubble...from HELL!
Don't give up Jared, you need to finish more games. Love seeing you play through things. You are one of the few let's players I watch on youtube, and I watch youtube every day.
lol...I was at a party way back in the 80's when I heard stage noises coming from a bedroom. I opened the door half expecting to find carnal activities. Instead, a guy was playing this - and it totally blew me away. At the time, these graphics were so cutting edge as to be jaw-dropping. I remember thinking that games couldn't get any better than this. I rushed out the next day and bought it for over $100 and played it repeatedly for 6 months. lol. Happy memories.
Kirkklan First class, yo, this is rad! Drinking orange juice out of a champagne glass? Is this what the people of Bel Air live like? Hm, this might be alright!
Literally all I remember of Alone in the Dark is that first attic room where that monster bursts in through the window and, from what I can recall, kept killing me. XD Much like with Resident Evil I could just never get used to the 'tanky' controls, so I had to just watch my older brothers play instead.
The Brown creature, according to the developer is a Chicken Zombie. Zombies are ghouls, but that fucks up the H.P. Lovecraftian design that they are supposed to look a bit more canine than an actual walking corpse.
Unless it was demo exclusive, you can get attacked more than twice in the first area. Basically the chicken monsters and zombies don't stop coming until you block off their entrances. Of course, it might have been different in the full game - but in my playthroughs I don't recall ever not blocking their entrances immediately.
If you want a super comprehensive playthrough of the original game, I'd check out Qotile Swirl's LP of it on the LP Archive. He even goes into the crapload of lore the game has surrounding it, not just from the plot and readable books, but even the developer's origins and future. Or you could just watch the guys at Retsuprae snark the hell out of the original trilogy commentating over footage taken from Longplays dot org.
One thing of note in case you didn't know Jared, it is a good idea to use healing items as soon as you get them, as while you start at 20 health, it's not you "maximum" health, here, you can use healing items to get well above 20, and just about make yourself into a full blown damage sponge so to speak.
As someone whose done a Let's Play of this game on my own channel, I can say from experience that while this game does have a few way out there puzzle solutions and some clunky combat controls, its still a fun game to play, even today. I'd even recommend playing the two sequels, even if they aren't as good as the original due to dropping the whole Lovecraftian horror theme.
It would have have been funny if after you pushed the wardrobe in front of the window when the rabid beaver-dog tries to bust through, a *THWAK* is heard, the wardrobe shakes, and the monster crying into the forest.
I remember playing some of this. I got stuck trying to get past the gargoyles on the stairs. I didn't consider the possibility of an enemy you can't beat to death, so I sat there trying to throw things at them till they died.
ah, this brings back so many memories (and all the troubles i had getting it to run in the first place, haha:)! glad to see you play the original alone in the dark, jared. but it makes me wonder how many of the viewers actually played it back in 1992. ;)
Frizzurd People are stuck in a haunted mansion, fight monsters, solve puzzles, and carry items around to progress all to survive. That's Sweet Home and RE1. Of course it didn't have fixed cameras and low-poly character models. It was on NES.
Frizzurd That's like saying Super Mario World is heavily inspired by Sonic 1 because you run and jump in both games. You're focusing on superficial aspects like hardware limitations and basic design choices for games at the time. The guy made Sweet Home long before Alone in the Dark came out. He later started making RE1 planning for it to be a remake of Sweet Home until it evolved into what it was when Mikami took over. This isn't my opinion. It's a fact.
How dare you! Scott Cawthon made the first survival horror game years before that! Sit N' Survive, look it up, nerd! (Just in case, this is a joke. Please don't take it seriously.)
I could not for the life of me remember what this game was called! I am so happy to find this! brings back such good memories! Also I loved you reviewing it!
Well done. Great hommage to the game & genre. It's good to see that the commentator and author of this video had previous knowledge of the game. It feels good and authentic. Something a bit rare on RUclips these days. Authenticity. I remember my first sessions on this game. So scary I hit the power button of the PC, once. The best sound effects on PC Speaker there was or the could be. One of the first 3D games in history. A precursor of scary things to come. The evil resides in the silence of the dark. Or something.
This game terrified the hell out of me as a child. I was probably 7 when I played this. To think that monster smashing through the window and attacking me scared the shit out of me lmao.
YASS omg I've been hoping you'd play this ever since you showed it in that video on AITD 360! I know it's kinda dated but I love old games like this, I'm so down for this playthrough! But woof @ 28:13 Jared pls ~_~; lol
The voice acting in that letter is marvelous. Also, you shouldn't just drop stuff, YOU SHOULD THROW IT. Preferably at enemies. It does decent damage and allows you to keep your distance.
Some of the stuff here actually spooked me a bit... Just because of how unusual it was. Old game graphics kinda scare me too since they're harder to comprehend.
You can beat the armor and get the sword (it's unbreakable) go to the dark bedroom on the second floor (it's by the bathroom), use the oil lamp, get the "very heavy statuette" (it's only use is to destroy the armor, then throw it at the armor.
It's a difficult choice. Emily Hartwood is a genuine protagonist with a reason to be here... but Edward Carnby is a certified old-timey badass.
In favour of Edward Carby there are moustaches. Do you see any moustaches on Emily? No? Then you go with Edward. That's the power of moustaches.
@@thefreakmachine I heard she had a really fine moustache, its just not in plain view.
"I don't have your stone! And fuck you anyway!"
-Totally Edward Carnby 2008
Zachary Blunck No Way is edward carnby this unlikeable a**hole.
-Projared
I love how Edward's running animation makes it look like he's done something naughty and he knows it.
that's because he DID something bad and he knows it.
Kecu Kritiques his running animation to me makes it look like he’s trying to find the nearest toilet after eating some chipotle
I can hear him teehee-ing...
I still remember when my sister screamed because of that frog. One of the funniest moments of my life, right there.
WatcherCCG She screwed because of a frog. Might wanna fix that.
You're seeing things, friend.
This guy is better at cover-ups than any dystopian future government.
I can amagen it now
I *loved* this game when I was a kid.

ProJared: "Don't worry children, I will protect your eyes."
Just not their ears
The grandad of survival horror itself, Alone in the Dark! I don't know why, but there's something so charming about old horror games.
Probably because old horror games are horror games and not Call of Zombies.
Mainly because horror games today are now Shooters or jump scares..
GRAND DAD?!
Hawk Breland High Quality R.I.P.
FLEENSTONES?
That death screen is so freakin' metal.
Pretty sure it was the cover to some metal album
(Ghastly face pokes from the corner)
"Hi!"

PixxelTrixx Hey! Didn't expect to see you here
I don't have you're "shhtone" and fuck you anyway!
Dear lord this game is old, but still has some decent atmosphere. And it does have some interesting mechanics for being so old.
Charlie McFarlin Another old game that holds up atmosphere wise is Clock Tower for the SNES. Played Doom 3 as a kid and it did nothing for me. Watched an LP of Clock Tower and found it far more unnerving.

I think Jared deserves this, after playing those atrocious reboots. He needs this goodness.

A game so influential and yet I haven't played it. Well, this is going to be fun.
It's impressive for 1992. A leap in graphics, creating a new genre... But it still plays like a 3D game from 1992. for 1992 its quite impressive! having the combination of a new kind of gameplay and impressive graphics this game sure is amazing
I can relate...
but to be honest... i'm was a gigantic coward (plus...didn't speak english) when I was younger

My god.. this was three years ago. It feel slike it was so recent. definitely one of my favorites
This game should be remastered, not shittly rebooted
There was going to be one. But Atari cancelled it.
You should play I have no mouth but I must scream.
Hell yes. I would love to see Jared go through that game.
That's a really hard game to stream/lp, though. It'd probably be really awkward at times
Charlotte Cumberbatch PlagueofGripes made a pretty good LP of it.
Two Best Friends did a good job of it, but that was in part because Woolie already read the book and played the game so he knew everything, while letting Pat figure it out on his own and only gave him help when he got stuck.
One of my favorite games they did because they handled it like that.
"This room is in the dark!
Projared: And I'm a alone in it!" xDDDDD I'm dying!
That voice acting is better than a lot of voice acting in games today...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
No.
Buber Marcus we really need a sarcasm font.
Fuzzycat Damn,we do.
Can someone make that a thing?
I had the old floppy disk version of the game. Honestly it's way better without voice acting
7.8/10 not medievil on the PlayStation
so much better than FNAF .. Keep doing more of this!
Why compare to different genres?
Buber Marcus cheap upvotes.
Lyubimov89 True.
I agree, the idea is very interesting.
Buber Marcus Different genres? Are they not both horror games?
The part where you started kicking the zombie in the dick and it zooms in, i just about died man.
you are without a doubt one of my favorite youtubers out there
IM THE LIGHTBRINGER! IM THE FUCKING UNIVERSE!
The french dub for this game is amazing, Especially from 1992
IM THE LIGHT BRINGER
IM THE F**KIN UNIVERSE
Getting knocked back into a door and the door actually getting knocked open is seriously impressive stuff for 1992, considering most games today treat doors as literally impenetrable.
ProJared is quickly becoming one of my favorite youtubers! I've watched through almost all these ProJared Plays videos!
Please tell me you've seen the Rainbow Six one. You have to.
He had some cool playthrough videos in his MAIN channel too! ;]
He's a great entertainer.
My family spent lots of money of the horlines for hints. I'm so thankful playing games now rather than back then. Lol
My name's Edward Carnby and I'm the slowest man alive.
"Jared remembers not to touch the chair with the ghost in it, right?" "JARED YOU TOUCHED THE CHAIR"
I love your save game names. I always find your videos very entertaining.
This is really impressive for 1992. Doesn't hold up well but I'm still impressed
I kind of wish more survival horror games let you punch enimies.
"Return to DOS"
I didn't know this game was a time machine.
R E T U R N T O Y O U R D O S M A S T E R
@ProJared I said that I would, so here I am =P =D
I didn't know how much I wanted this until it happened.
And thus begin a dark tale... Inside the mansion of Derceto.
This game holds up surprisingly well and I didn't even grow up with it. Glad to see Jared play a good AITD game for once.
I believe Sweet Home (made by Capcom) was one of the first survival horror games that was released in Jp.
When RE was being made it was originally going to be remake of Sweet Home but later the devs made into a original game.
Sweet home was also based off of the horror film of the same name. Its cheesy, but some stuff will get you good. Watch it if you want to.
Ay', I forgot to mention that I do know about Sweet Home being a movie first. I did watch it movie and it was kind of enjoyable. *cough* I did cried on scene though *cough*
But, I think Sweet home was kind of like an RPG mixed in with survival horror. Sort of like Waxworks.
I know I can google Waxworks but what's that game about?
What is the dog version of this game, Alone in the Bark
Also doubles as the name of the tree version.
(You sneeze)
Bless you, Jared! =)
8:13
"This room is in the dark.....and I'M ALONE IN IT" I loved that moment
Its so strange how bright the environment is, how many horror games manage to be suspenseful and scary with fairly bright vibrant settings
4:49 is what sold me on this game.
I watched this play through at least 3 times. The charm of this game, the cheesy editor's note etc. Really entertaining and always a nice watch.
Oh my!! Finally I'll see somebody playing this and (hopefully) actually finish it!
'Cause I couldn't back in my day
This is the first lets play that I have seen where the person playing knows how to play the game. I am glad
Is it my imagination, or does Edward have a bit of a badonk?
Ilpaca Blank Oh shit he does haha
lol he does
I think he looks more like Nick Diamond from Celebrity Deathmatch
YES. All of my yes, PLEASE make a series out of this.
Don't give up Jared, you need to finish more games. Love seeing you play through things. You are one of the few let's players I watch on youtube, and I watch youtube every day.

Much like with Resident Evil I could just never get used to the 'tanky' controls, so I had to just watch my older brothers play instead.
I just noticed... his fighting "idle " stance looks like Team Skull animation in sun/moon... can't unsee it D:
The noise he makes when you get hurt is fucking hilarious.
Watching as many videos as I can to support my boi: Video 35
I loved that Smallpox joke.
It's honestly amazing just how far graphical resolution has come in 25 years.
NGL, the outro music actually startled me me more than anything in the game did XD
I had no idea there was a "talkie" version of this game. I grew up with the floppy disk version. I think I might be glad about that. :)
I love this. Keep it coming please. I love how almost every room throws some new shit at you. You cannot predict this game first go.
12:43 The first of Jared's repressed memories of this game.
is the other alone in the dark nothing like this, because this is gold.
Jared should dress up as Edward Carnby for Halloween.
The Brown creature, according to the developer is a Chicken Zombie. Zombies are ghouls, but that fucks up the H.P. Lovecraftian design that they are supposed to look a bit more canine than an actual walking corpse.

12:44 Jared has officially leaked the artwork for the next Rings of Saturn album
Supporting you dude.
24:57 I went "OH GOD HE TOUCHED THE CHAIR"
That damn ghost scared me so bad when I first played this. XD
If anyone was curious, the creatures at 21:14 are called Nightgaunts.
I remember playing some of this. I got stuck trying to get past the gargoyles on the stairs. I didn't consider the possibility of an enemy you can't beat to death, so I sat there trying to throw things at them till they died.
Play this with headphones is freaking scary for sure but I still love it
8:28 MMMMM Das sum guud old fashioned game voice acting right there xD
ah, this brings back so many memories (and all the troubles i had getting it to run in the first place, haha:)! glad to see you play the original alone in the dark, jared.

Finally! I've known how much you've liked this game Jared and I've wanted to see you play through all of it. This should be verrryy interesting...
28:00 Hey, Resident Evil used that hallway design, too!
Haven't finished the Lets Play yet, but I'm really enjoying it a lot! Subscribed! Can't wait to see what happens!

The voice acting in that letter is marvelous. Also, you shouldn't just drop stuff, YOU SHOULD THROW IT. Preferably at enemies. It does decent damage and allows you to keep your distance.
Sometimes I too like to turn into balls, spin around going "WHOOOW, WHOOOW, WHOOOW" and give people heart attacks.
The choices of games you play on this channel are really interesting! This channel definitely has its own flavor and I love it!
Some of the stuff here actually spooked me a bit...
Just because of how unusual it was. Old game graphics kinda scare me too since they're harder to comprehend.
I love the over the top voice acting-that made my week :)
why does edward look stoned to hell hahaha
You can beat the armor and get the sword (it's unbreakable) go to the dark bedroom on the second floor (it's by the bathroom), use the oil lamp, get the "very heavy statuette" (it's only use is to destroy the armor, then throw it at the armor.
