I was like you for about 6 months into playing valorant. "Buying skins is such a waste of money, never spending anything on that" . And then the prime vandal comes to my shop at 990 vp via the night market... The floodgates began. Now I'm proud of my collection but at the same time embarrassed with how much I've spent. "Spend your money where you spend your time" I guess 😅

I think the reason skins sell so well is because they literally have a different feel. I agree, with the amount of money I've spent in Val, I could have bought plenty of different games, but the quality of the skins is very appealing. They know that in competitive gaming, people like to show off one way or another, and skins are just a small payment away.

And when i but skins from specific sets it has those sets come back into my shop far more frequently untill i dont buy a skin from the set twice. So i could over time buy a whole set within 2 months as long as i dont skip out on them too much one week. Its a weird system that nobody talks about but i did notice it

It's not said enough, but the Radiant Entertainment System bundle is arguably the best skinline to be released so far. The animations, songs, inspects, and sounds are all top tier. They also made the variants have completely different animations, finishers, and sounds, essentially making it 3 skins in one. Personally, the arcade theme and color scheme isn't my taste so I didn't get it, but the price was made to seem outrageous when it really isn't. I really hope Riot doesn't get discouraged out of making variants do extra stuff because of the backlash they got for the price, I'd love to see this idea come around again

    • @cynthiahembree3957

Yeah I was about to rebuttal that you can make the argument that the skin bundle is actually 15 skins and not 5 so it's a really bad example. I think there are other bundles we can argue are better examples because they aren't on par for the price. For example I think the Minima bundle should have been used for battlepass because 40 dollars was basically highway robbery.

I come from a poorer country where even buying games instead of pirating was out of the ordinary, so I'd never spend money on cosmetics in a free to play game.
The only reason I've considered it in Valorant was because some skins have more visible bullet tracers, which is an obvious advantage, especially for me as I seem to have more trouble seeing things against the backdrop of the game's colourful maps.
That consideration didn't last long though, I didn't realise how insane the pricing and the whole shop are.

I have a lot of skins in CS:GO and I never wanted to buy any skins in Valorant simply because as you said: As soon as you purchased one, you need a full collection to not make your inventory look weird. But when I saw that "Night Market Butterfly Knife" in my daily rotation I simply couldn't resist. Not only would it give me the nostalgy of my Butterfly Knife in CS:GO but also it doesn't have any colour. One might ask: "Well then why did you buy it? It's basically just an ugly looking vanilla knife." Exactly! That knife does not make my inventory look colourful hence I don't have any urge to buy any other skin in the game. It perfectly fits into the default skins on the guns. And I didn't buy anything since and I probably won't in the future. So in total I spent 35€ on Valorant and ended up using about 25€ of it. The rest will probably be sitting on my account forever or I might just buy some agent with it to have it gone.

Over the 2 years of play I have spent some petty money on Valorant skins. Probably around 150$ (EU region, poor country, skins cost less). By this point I have 5 premium vandal skins, two of them 2000+ credits, including new Champions Vandal.
And I think I finally had enough. It took me way too long to realize that Valorant skins are the same as Fortnite skins. There are so many cool loks and esthetics, but in the end its the same game no matter the viduals. I don't regret paying this money, but now I have main guns skins and I am content.
The most important mentality after buying your first skin is "well im fine now, *unless* this skin drops in the shop". Such mental gymnastics makes you more susceptible to buy any cool looning thing in the shop.
I love my Champions Vandal, but honesly, if it was me, I would buy blub blub Vandal and be happy for the rest of my life

Whats funny to me is, that the amount of Valorant Points you purchase is exact as Riot Points in LoL, but because LoL shop economy was from old days before mobile monetization and rotating shop, you can actually get some good skins for the price you pay (new content is priced the new way ofcourse, but there is no rotating shop and the Night Market equivalent has higher discounts).
So the pricing of points you get for real money is same from a game made 14 years ago, but the price for skins is made by mobile and rotating shop strategy.
I like to support developers of the game i enjoy and put time in, but for someone who migrated from LoL to Valorant, this discouraged me from putting money in this game.

By making agent levels no longer available by using small amounts of VP, (used to be 200 VP per level), it forces players to pay the full 1000 VP and so having say 800 VP is literally useless unless you plan on purchasing new skins.
They could have added KP and keeping agent levels unlock-able using VP, but nope, now agents cost full price or KP only.

I'm still missing marshal, ares, judge, and Bucky. To be fair, I do have 4 different vandal skins, two phantom skins, and two meele skins, but still not a full collection. Now, do I regret it? For the most part, no. It feels better and even more fun to play the game with skins, I have an ALT with all default and the amount of times I find my game to feel almost unsatisfying is more than you'd think. The only time I've ever regret a purchase is when I was trying to buy my first vandal skin, I wanted prime. I waited for so long when I eventually found the origin vandal. I thought, why don't I just buy this now and use it until prime comes in my shop? Well I bought it and guess what came in my shop the next day, prime. But that's completely just a coincidence and if we're being honest was my fault. Anyways, it's up to you to buy skins or not. If you'd ask me I'd say yes, but I'm also a spendaholic.

Ive spent like 200~ USD on skins and I do regret buying some bundles immediately, like RGX 2 and forsaken, mainly because I don't use them anymore so it feels like I dropped 100+ in le valorant points for no reason. But in CSGO I don't think I've even spent that much I usually trade lol. If you're going to buy any skins, this advice goes to anyone, you should get skins for your main guns, so phantom/vandal/classic/ghost/Op and you should get a good sound effect. A good way to know if a gun has a good sound effect is not just by the preview, but how often you pick it up in-game off dead bodies.

as someone who has owned (account got banned) 9 vandals, 6 knife, 1 phantom, 1 operator and 2 sheriffs i can say that I have 2 problems with valorant's shop.
The system of "buy the skin today or it dissapers" came from fortnite, but they didnt get the 2 crucial points from fortnite
    1) It hasn't changed the amount of skins available in 1 day since the beginning, even tho riot released dozens of shit collections
The more skins fortnite devs have added, the more skins appeared in the shop on 1 day. Riot? nah, they are good. There's like 50 collections of 5 skins each that I wouldnt buy even if im being held at a gunpoint and yet we still have 4 slots for skins in a day. But it gets worse, even when i was playing on my old account I saw how much of the same skins i am getting, i could get the same skin 4 times in 2 weeks. And now i am playing on an account with 2 skins and guess what? i have reaver sheriff 3 times in 7 days (not even trolling), like wtf i want ion vandal and i will never buy anything again but i am getting full garbage and the same skins for 2-3 times in a span of a couple days.
    2) The "loot" is different for everyone
In fortnite, the shop is the same for everyone, so if a good skins drops after 100 days of not being in the shop if you go ranked you will see a lot of people playing with it. In valorant everyone has a different shop, so if you are unlucky, someone else isnt. I have known people who didnt get their wished skins FOR HALF A YEAR, and now imagine the reaver vandal hasnt appeared in everyone's shop for half a year, heres the reality: RIOT CANT AFFORD IT, reaver is the best vandal for most people, and if a skin like that hasnt appeared in the shop for half a year it would be a massive tragedy to their money, so they would eventually add it in the shop and now you can buy it without being unlucky.
I would've bought WAY more skins than i had on my account if they didnt have this stupid system where you have to wait for months for a skin to appear. You be like: damn, i want that skin, a week passes by and then you realise that you dont want it anymore, but guess what? if you could buy it during that week YOU WOULDVE but you couldnt so riot lost money because now you wouldnt buy it, so i think its quite dumb of them to at least not do those 2 things mentioned above.
thank you for reading my essay

Also if I bought skins I would have squeakers asking me for them every pre round when I’m trying to get setup

Been a free to play player on and off since Covid. Just started getting back into the game, and it’s time for me to start investing into my account. I’ve only spent 10 radianite so far to upgrade this most resent battlepass’s level 50 ghost to the gold version. I’m not planning on buying anything unless it is a butterfly knife, BlastX phantom, or reaver/the dragon vandal. Even passed up the prime 2.0 karambit, to which I was yelled at my friends, but I made a deal with myself😂

buy the champions bundle it doesn't disappoint it has a song playing while you inspect it and glows when your top fragging and the finisher is very clean especially when you walk into it. also its a one off so once its gone it will never be back in the shop.

So a friend made a good point to me about my perspective on these skins. I agree they're overpriced but if they bring me enjoyment it's not wasted money. People spend and use money on different things that bring them joy. That could be clothes, shoes, cars, drinks, etc. If you want it and can afford it and it provides you any sort of enjoyment and pleasure then it was worth it in the end. However dont get me wrong I can see the manipulative practices and while I don't think theyre great by any means I enjoy the game and I like the skins so I'll albeit with some reluctance buy them nonetheless.

Spent like 500 MYR (or 109 USD) on Valorant from purchasing the Araxys(was sponsored 2/3 of it), run it back bundle and the latest one being the Champions bundle along with a handful of battle passes.
Honestly after buying the champions bundle I start to question my life choices of spending 4 games worth of money on a skin that you’ll probably just die holding it and having your enemy crap on you with YOUR skin. Probably won’t buy anymore since I’m quite satisfied with my collection even though a part of it is default.

But the Battlepasses just seem like too good of a deal, like I could pay 30 bucks on a single vandal skin or 10 bucks for a skin on almost every weapon, granted they don't look as amazing as the expensive skin, but it's just so much better than skinless

main thing is, a guy who plays multiple games, spends equally in all games, not too much, not too less, that guy has average amount of skins in every game, and a guy who plays only valorant has ABSURD amount of skins sometimes, because if you playin only a game why no invest, and some people play just for fun and they don't want any skins as they don't wanna spend any money on games, these people probably play multiple games, what i am tryna say is skins r overpriced agreed but people who only play valorant will not complain, but an average all games gamer will say "overpriced riot is gonna get fined for so much skins", for a all time valorant player skin is an accessory to add extra stuff to their gameplay as they r only gonna play valorant, whereas if someone plays multiple games, they will not spend money on only 1 game or might not spend money at all, cause if u buy a skin, u get addicted to buy skins in that particular game and then all your other games are just lying around, while the game you spent money on becomes your first priority
if r dedicated to play 1 game sure spend 20-30$ and thats good, if you don't wanna spend, DON'T, and if u play multiple games try not to spend all your money in 1 game, or just don't spend money on any game

    It's addictive by the way.
Spend once in Val and u are done. Hooked forever. Even if u play rarely u will find urself never satisfied with what u have.
I literally have 5skins for vandal. But it's not enough I always want more.
. So I stopped playing for a long time and got back
It was ok for a month or so then the sensation of wanting more skins came back. Now I didn't spend since the Oni bundle and I don't think I will ever spend again even if I have to quit the game.
    It's very frightening monetazation strategy.
